The uncertainties concerning the author’s identity, place of birth, and date notwithstanding, the poems permit a cursory glimpse of a polis community which was characterized by a fierce competition for wealth, social recognition, and sheer power

Dans les épopées homériques, les poleis sont omniprésentes. Cependant, la ptolis homérique n’est pas encore conceptualisée comme une association de citoyens, mais plutôt comme un espace qui est délimité et protégé (par des murs, par exemple) de l’extérieur et qui a un ordre spatial à l’intérieur qui se concentre sur l’agora comme espace central. Ce terme a déjà le sens d’« assemblée », qui ne peut pas encore prendre de décisions contraignantes mais est déjà soumise à des normes rudimentaires — on peut donc voir ici une première étape d’institutionnalisation d’un organe central de la polis archaïque développée.In Homeric epics, the poleis are omnipresent. However, the Homeric ptolis is not yet conceptualized as an association of citizens, but rather as a space which is delimited and protected (by walls, for example) from the outside and which has a spatial order inside which focuses on the agora as a central space. This term already has the meaning of “assembly”, which cannot yet take binding decisions but is already subject to rudimentary standards—we can therefore see here a first stage of institutionalization of a central organ of the archaic polis
