CCRS proposal for evaluating LANDSAT-D MSS and TM data
Accomplishments in the evaluation of LANDSAT 4 data are reported. The objectives of the Canadian proposal are: (1) to quantify the LANDSAT-4 sensors and system performance for the purpose of updating the radiometric and geometric correction algorithms for MSS and for developing and evaluating new correction algorithms to be used for TM data processing; (2) to compare and access the degree to which LANDSAT-4 MSS data can be integrated with MSS imagery acquired from earlier LANDSAT missions; and (3) to apply image analysis and information extraction techniques for specific user applications such as forestry or agriculture

Relativistic BB84, relativistic errors, and how to correct them
The Bennett-Brassard cryptographic scheme (BB84) needs two bases, at least
one of them linearly polarized. The problem is that linear polarization
formulated in terms of helicities is not a relativistically covariant notion:
State which is linearly polarized in one reference frame becomes depolarized in
another one. We show that a relativistically moving receiver of information
should define linear polarization with respect to projection of
Pauli-Lubanski's vector in a principal null direction of the Lorentz
transformation which defines the motion, and not with respect to the helicity
basis. Such qubits do not depolarize.Comment: revtex
Improved modelling of helium and tritium production for spallation targets
Reliable predictions of light charged particle production in spallation
reactions are important to correctly assess gas production in spallation
targets. In particular, the helium production yield is important for assessing
damage in the window separating the accelerator vacuum from a spallation
target, and tritium is a major contributor to the target radioactivity. Up to
now, the models available in the MCNPX transport code, including the widely
used default option Bertini-Dresner and the INCL4.2-ABLA combination of models,
were not able to correctly predict light charged particle yields. The work done
recently on both the intranuclear cascade model INCL4, in which cluster
emission through a coalescence process has been introduced, and on the
de-excitation model ABLA allows correcting these deficiencies. This paper shows
that the coalescence emission plays an important role in the tritium and
production and that the combination of the newly developed versions of the
codes, INCL4.5-ABLA07, now lead to good predictions of both helium and tritium
cross sections over a wide incident energy range. Comparisons with other

Rictor, a Novel Binding Partner of mTOR, Defines a Rapamycin-Insensitive and Raptor-Independent Pathway that Regulates the Cytoskeleton
AbstractThe mammalian TOR (mTOR) pathway integrates nutrient- and growth factor-derived signals to regulate growth, the process whereby cells accumulate mass and increase in size. mTOR is a large protein kinase and the target of rapamycin, an immunosuppressant that also blocks vessel restenosis and has potential anticancer applications. mTOR interacts with the raptor and GβL proteins [1–3] to form a complex that is the target of rapamycin. Here, we demonstrate that mTOR is also part of a distinct complex defined by the novel protein rictor (rapamycin-insensitive companion of mTOR). Rictor shares homology with the previously described pianissimo from D. discoidieum[4], STE20p from S. pombe[5], and AVO3p from S. cerevisiae[6, 7]. Interestingly, AVO3p is part of a rapamycin-insensitive TOR complex that does not contain the yeast homolog of raptor and signals to the actin cytoskeleton through PKC1 [6]. Consistent with this finding, the rictor-containing mTOR complex contains GβL but not raptor and it neither regulates the mTOR effector S6K1 nor is it bound by FKBP12-rapamycin. We find that the rictor-mTOR complex modulates the phosphorylation of Protein Kinase C α (PKCα) and the actin cytoskeleton, suggesting that this aspect of TOR signaling is conserved between yeast and mammals
General Synthesis Report of the Different ADS Design Status. Establishment of a Catalogue of the R&D needs
This document is a General Synthesis Report of the Different ADS Design Status being designed within the EUROTRANS Integrated Project; an FP6 European commission partially funded programme. This project had the goal to demonstrate the possibility of nuclear waste transmutation/burning in Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) at industrial scale.The focus is on a Pb-cooled ADS for the European Facility on Industrial scale Transmuter (ETD/EFIT) with a back-up solution based on an He cooled ADS.As an intermediate step towards this industrial-scale prototype, an eXperimental Transmuter based on ADS concept (ETD/XT-ADS) able to demonstrate both the feasibility of the ADS concept and to accumulate experience when using dedicated fuel sub-assemblies or dedicated pins within a MOX fuel core has been also studied.The two machines (XT-ADS and Pb cooled EFIT) have been designed in a consistent way bringing more credibility to the potential licensing of these plants and with sufficient details to allow definition of the critical issues as regards design, safety and associated technological and basic R&D needs. The different designs fit rather well with the technical objectives fixed at the beginning of the project in consistency with the European Roadmap on ADS development.For what concerns the accelerator, the superconducting LINAC has been clearly assessed as the most suitable concept for the three reactors in particular with respect to the stringent requirements on reliability. Associated R&D needs have been identified and will be focused on critical components (injector, cryomodule) long term testing.The design of the different ADS has been performed in view of what is reasonably achievable pending the completion of R&D programmes. The way the EUROTRANS Integrated Project has been organised with other domains than the DM1 Design being specifically devoted to R&D tasks in support to the overall ETD/EFIT and ETD/XT-ADS design tasks has been helpful. The other domains were centred on the assessment of reactivity measurement techniques (DM2 ECATS), on the development of U-free dedicated fuels (DM3 AFTRA), on materials behaviour and heavy liquid metal technology (DM4 DEMETRA) and on nuclear data assessment (DM5 NUDATRA). Pending questions associated to technology gaps have been identified through the different appropriate R&D work programmes and a Catalogue of the R&D needs has been established.Finally, the work within the EUROTRANS integrated project has provided an overall assessment of the feasibility at a reasonable cost for an ADS based transmutation so that a decision can be taken to launch a detailed design and construction of the intermediate step Experimental ADS now already launched within the 7th FP programme under the name of Common Design Team (CDT)

The MEGAPIE-TEST Project
The goals of the MEGAPIE initiative are to design, build and operate a 1MW heavy liquid metal target. The first step towards the realization of the MEGAPIE target was the feasibility studies, which outlined the entire project. Contextually to the feasibility studies the conceptual design phase started with the establishment of R&D working groups assisting the design and validation of both the target and its ancillary systems. In this framework the EU project MEGAPIE-TEST has been structured in three work packages with tasks concerning the finalization of the engineering design, the components and subsystem testing, the integral test and the first irradiation period. The MEGAPIE-TEST consortium is composed by the 14 partners: FZK, PSI, CEA, ENEA, SCK-CEN, CNRS /IDFE, IN2P3, LMPGM, EMN, ISMRA, UNIV-NANTES, U-PSUDXI, USTL. Currently the engineering design of the target has been finalized, its manufacturing has been launched and the design activities on the ancillary systems were almost completed. R&D activities in the fields of materials, thermal – hydraulics, structural mechanics, neutronic and nuclear assessment and liquid metal technologies were performed in order to assist specific design issues. Some Subsystem and component tests were also performed and the preparation of the integral test is an ongoing activity
Pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200GeV
We present a systematic analysis of two-pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN]=200GeV using the STAR detector at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We extract the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss radii and study their multiplicity, transverse momentum, and azimuthal angle dependence. The Gaussianness of the correlation function is studied. Estimates of the geometrical and dynamical structure of the freeze-out source are extracted by fits with blast-wave parametrizations. The expansion of the source and its relation with the initial energy density distribution is studied
