Study of the functioning and importance of diffusers in Formula 1 cars

    Get PDF
This project focuses on explaining and understanding the functioning of diffusers and their importance in Formula 1 cars. Formula 1 car diffusers are the most unexplored elements in these vehicles, since their interaction with the ground show a non-understood flow behaviour. First, an explanation of the fundamental aerodynamic concepts that govern the aerodynamics of these vehicles is presented in order to understand how the flow works on diffusers and how relevant their use in aerodynamic load generation is. In addition, understanding these concepts is essential to analyze the results obtained in subsequent flow simulations and analysis. An extensive research about experimental and numerical information about motorsport diffusers is done. The geometry of diffusers is studied to know which is the optimum geometry that reaches high level of performance on this elements. The theoretical approach is principally based on [8] and [7] due to its highly understandable and clear content about motorsport diffusers. Once the functioning of diffusers has been analyzed and understood, CFD simulations of an approximate diffuser geometry are performed. The geometry simulated is the Ahmed body, a geometry that is used as a model that simulates the flow behaviour of motorsport diffusers. Three different Ahmed body configurations are performed: 0º diffuser, 25º diffuser and in the third case rear airfoils are added to the 25º diffuser Ahmed body. Simulation boundary conditions are determined taking into account the wall contour conditions. One of the parameters to be studied is the value of lift coefficient, which shows the aerodynamic load of the car, that is, the vertical force that causes the car to adhere to the ground and, hence improve cornering and acceleration performance. These analysis are performed with open-source CFD simulation software OpenFOAM©. Since there is no previous experience with this type of software, a stage of familiarization is done beforehand. An analysis of the results is done relating these results with the theoretical approach, as well as making a comparison between the 3 simulations. It is obtained that the 25º diffuser configuration generated more downforce than the 0º diffuser, which makes sense as the aim of adding a diffuser is to increase the amount of downforce produced. In addition, the 25º diffuser Ahmed body with the rear airfoils results in an substantial increase of downforce thank to the low pressure zone generated at the back of the body with the help of these airfoils. Finally, a study of the project costs will be performed as well as an environmental impact study

Exploring the Chemistry of Lanthanoid β–Triketonate Complexes

    Get PDF
This thesis reports the design, synthesis and characterisation of new β-triketonate based lanthanoid complexes. The use of systematically modified β-triketone molecules as ligands for these f-metal ions and their effect on the structural and photophysical properties of the complexes were investigated in detail. This study allowed a better understanding of the relationship between structure and photophysical activity of the lanthanoid complexes and the isolation of unusually efficient near-infrared emitters

    Hybrid and Creative Taipei

    Get PDF
This paper examines the hybrid condition of Taipei's built environment within its socio-cultural context and daily activity of the city. It also points out certain forward-looking policies adopted by the City Government that over the last decades gave way to interesting and radical ambiances within the city. To illustrate this fact three case studies are described from the point of view of a pedestrian and on the basis of a journey. By identifying the key qualities that define these new ambiances, some relevant conclusions for urban intervention based on the creation of significant urban ambiances are finally extracted

Applications of the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire: A Review

Sustainability seeks to provide economically viable products in an environmentally friendly way while respecting worker rights. Physical wellbeing forms part of these rights. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) diminish productivity, cause absence from work, impose costs on the public health system and can cast doubt on the sustainability of a company or a product. The objective of the present work is to review the literature on the application of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) on a worldwide level. In this work, the use of the NMQ has been classified by categories of knowledge, countries and years. The search was made using “Web of Science-Core Collection”. In total, 259 articles were chosen from scientific journals and conferences related, according to the title and or abstract, to the practical application of the questionnaire. In conclusion, the NMQ has been applied mainly in three sectors: “activities related to treating human health and social issues”, “manufacturing industries”, and “agriculture, livestock, fishing, and forestry”. The NMQ is an indirect method commonly used individually or complemented with other methods for evaluating the MSD and possible associated psychosocial and labour risks. The use of NMQ can help in the evaluation of the sustainability of a company

Non-Financial Information versus Financial as a Key to the Stakeholder Engagement: A Higher Education Perspective

    Get PDF
In light of the increased demand for greater accountability and legitimacy, new disclosure mechanisms based on non-financial transparency have emerged. Universities cannot be left behind with respect to these social demands. In addition, continuous competition in excellence is driving higher education organizations to exhibit a greater visibility of their results, necessarily incorporating more non-financial aspects to boost stakeholder engagement. The novelty of this work lies in the analysis of the real state of non-financial vs. financial information in both public and private universities and in the exploration of their influence on stakeholder online engagement. To this end, a content analysis of the universities’ web pages and Facebook profiles was conducted, and a multivariable linear regression analysis was performed. The main results show that private and larger universities that lead Webometrics for Google Scholar Citations, and those that have gradually been adopting financial reporting, are the most interested in implementing Facebook as a two-way communication strategy. It seems that stakeholders react more to financial transparency and, therefore, universities still prefer financial disclosure to improve accountability

Abstract: the present paper shows a vision about the complexity of translation in judicial field concerning the use of terminological glossaries. In the context of Justice, it is common for judicial translators and interpreters to deal with all kinds of professional challenges. So, they must be sufficiently prepared. Glossaries of specific terminology are a resource very useful that facilitates translator’s task, by serving as a bridge of communication between intermediaries of Justice and citizens who request their services (appeals, court proceedings, lawsuits, etc.), either written (translation of documents) or oral (interpreting of speeches). The main starting hypothesis is the urgent need to create these specific resources for interpreters and translators working within the Justice, and whose lack only increases the difficulties that these professionals have, undoubtedly, when the time to perform their translation tasks, given the poor availability of time to produce their own terminological glossaries of consultation. With this study, to show advantages and difficulties of developing glossaries, that is the intention. Finally, results confirm our hypothesis of advantages to have available specific terminological glossaries in Legal-Judicial area which, undoubtedly, facilitate translation tasks in this context of Public Services Interpreting and Translation.
