The intertidal ecosystems are seriously damaged in most of the Andalousian coast, mainly due to accessibility and human effect. However, Tarifa Island, is still in an excellent state of conservation, due to the access restrictions and unique biogeographical position. Five stations were selected along the island and vertical distribution of the main species of macroalgae and sessile fauna were studies using quadrats of 50x50cm (subdivided in 25 square units). Temperature, salinity, pH and oxygen concentration were similar in all the stations. The highest diversity was measured in the intermediate belts. The dominant species of algae were Asparagopsis armata and Corallina elongata, distributed in the lowest levels close to the subtidal, and the turf of Caulacanthus ustulatus and Gelidium spp, which occupied the intermediate levels. Regarding with the fauna, the crustacean Chtamalus stellatus and the mollusc Littorina neritoides dominated the highest levels. The limpets Patella caerulea and P. rustica were also abundant, the former distributed in the intermediate zone and the latter restricted to the upper belts. The algae Codium adherens and Colpomenia sinuosa preferred stations with sediment influence, Ulva rigida, Valonia utricularis and Osmundea pinnatifida were dominant in the stations exposed to east winds, whereas Chaetomorpha linum was found in sites exposed to west winds. In connection with the fauna, the barnacle Pollicipes pollicipes was only present in the most exposed stations, Siphonaria pectinata was registered in the less exposed sites and C. stellatus dominated the stations exposed to west winds. The endangered species Astroides calycularis, Dendropoma petraeum, Patella ferruginea and Cymbula nigra are also present along Tarifa intertidal, which should increase the value of the site in conservation policies.

This paper analyses the glacial evolution of the Pas Mountains, in the Eastern Cantabrian Mountains, the glacial landforms and deposits by geomorphological mapping, electric and seismic surveys, and dating intramorainic peat bog and till deposits. The external morainic complex (S-I) shows a glacial extension maximum before 29.150-28.570 cal a BP. A second glacial advance and equilibrium (S-II) have been studied in the entire massif, with glaciers reaching similar positions to the previous phase. Finally, two phases (S-III and S-IV) with very small glaciers developed in the cirque. The last equilibrium glacial phase has been attributed to Late Pleistocene cold phases, previous to Tardiglacial ones. Dating in the Pas Mountains are in agreement with previous dating in the Cantabrian Range and bears out the existence of a glacial maximum, previous to the European LGM

    Extending magny-cours cache coherence

One cost-effective way to meet the increasing demand for larger high-performance shared-memory servers is to build clusters with off-the-shelf processors connected with low-latency point-to-point interconnections like HyperTransport. Unfortunately, HyperTransport addressing limitations prevent building systems with more than eight nodes. While the recent High-Node Count HyperTransport specification overcomes this limitation, recently launched twelve-core Magny-Cours processors have already inherited it and provide only 3 bits to encode the pointers used by the directory cache which they include to increase the scalability of their coherence protocol. In this work, we propose and develop an external device to extend the coherence domain of Magny-Cours processors beyond the 8-node limit while maintaining the advantages provided by the directory cache. Evaluation results for systems with up to 32 nodes show that the performance offered by our solution scales with the number of nodes, enhancing the directory cache effectiveness by filtering additional messages. Particularly, we reduce execution time by 47 percent in a 32-die system with respect to the 8-die Magny-Cours configuration. This work was supported by the Spanish MICINN, Consolider Programme and Plan E funds, as well as European Commission FEDER funds, under Grants CSD2006-00046 and TIN2009-14475-C04-01/03. Structure-activity relationship study of cationic carbosilane dendritic systems as antibacterial agents

    Get PDF
This work focuses on the antibacterial activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gramnegative Escherichia coli and the hemolytic properties of two types of ammonium cationic carbosilane systems: dendrimers and dendrons. The effects of: i) the generation, ii) the type of peripheral groups near the cationic charges (a SiMe2 moiety or a S atom depending on the synthetic procedure, hydrosilylation or thiol-ene addition, respectively), iii) the core of dendrimers (polyphenoxo vs. Si atom) and iv) the focal point of dendrons (-N3, -NH2, -OH) have been assessed. The structure-activity relationship analysis indicates the importance of an adequate balance between the hydrophilic and lipophilic fragments of these molecules to reach the best antibacterial activity. Regarding hemolysis, lowest toxicity values were registered for dendritic systems with a sulfur atom close to the surface and, in the particular case of dendrons, for those with a hydroxyl focal point. One dendrimer and one dendron, both bearing a sulfur atom close to the surface, scored best in the activity-toxicity relationship analysis and were chosen for resistance assays. No changes in the inhibitory and bactericidal capacity in the case of the dendron and only a slight increase of these values for the dendrimer were observed after 15 subculture cycles. Furthermore, these two compounds stayed active towards different strains of resistant bacteria and avoid formation of biofilm at concentrations over the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).Ministerio de Economía y Empres

A comparison of the taphonomic attributes of quarries VM3 and VM4 of the Early Pleistocene site of Venta Micena (Baza Basin, SE Spain)

The site of Venta Micena (Guadix-Baza Depression, SE Spain), a rich Fossil-Lagerstätten of late Early Pleistocene age (1.6-1.5 Ma), preserves a diverse assemblage of large mammals. Up to date, >24,000 skeletal remains have been unearthed from the surface excavated (~400 m2) in the two main quarries of the site, VM3 and VM4, which represents a density of fossils of >60/m2. Although this density is not homogeneously recorded across the 80-120 cm thick VM stratum, which outcrops over ~2.5 km, it suggests that tens of millions of fossils were preserved in the micritic limestones of this lithological unit. VM3 has been interpreted as a den of the giant hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris in the plain that surrounded the Baza paleolake. Taphonomic analyses showed that the hyenas: (i) scavenged the prey hunted by the hypercarnivores, sabertoothed felids and wild dogs; (ii) transported the remains to their communal den as whole carcasses or selected anatomical parts; and (iii) fractured the skeletal parts according to their marrow contents and mineral density, which resulted in well-defined consumption sequences. In the case of VM4, an excavation quarry ~350 m distant from VM3, preliminary taphonomic analyses of the assemblage showed several differences, including: (i) a higher frequency of elements in anatomical connection than in VM3; (ii) a lower proportion of bones tooth-marked by carnivores (5.5%) compared with their frequency in VM3 (29.4%); (iii) a lower proportion of remains with salivary and gastric alterations (0.06% in both cases) than in VM3 (0.34% and 0.15%, respectively); and (iv) a less advanced degree of weathering (90.8% of bones show weathering stage 0 in VM4 compared to 75.9% in VM3).ICAZ Taphonomy Working Group, CSIC, MNCN Universidad de Málaga. Deciphering the record of hyaenic activity in the Early Pleistocene site of Fuente Nueva-3 (Baza Basin, SE Spain)

FN3 is an open air site, dated ~1.4 Ma. Their archaeological levels preserve evidences of human presence, consisting in lithic artefacts and cuts and percussion marks on bones. The lithic remains are associated with abundant macromammals bones with a very wide size range, from proboscideans to small mustelids. Carnivores are represented, mainly, by isolated teeth, bellowing to canids, ursids, felids and hyaenids, and their activity is recorded by the presence of different tooth marks types. However, there exists an important difference in the carnivore record between the levels, consisting in the presence of more than 200 coprolites in the Upper Level, whereas in the Lower Level these elements are practically absent. For the identification of the defecating organism, different analyses have been performed. The morphological study evidences the presence of the seven shape-types of pellets, although the most common morphologies are round, oval and disk. The colour of hyena faeces is also very characteristic, colour analysis of FN3 coprolites shows a predominance of whitish and very pale brown tonalities. To determine the composition, the samples were studied by XRD, XRF and SEM. The results have revealed that the coprolites mostly consist of calcium phosphate. These data are consistent with the expected composition of faeces in an organism that ingests a large amount of bones, in addition, macroscopic observation of the coprolites surface evidence the presence of numerous fragments of digested bones within them. All these features allow us to adscribe the FN3 coprolites to the hyaena Pachycrocuta brevirostris, species of which several teeth have been found at this site. This record manifests a great difference between both archaeological levels, showing in the Upper Level a scenario were hominin and hyaenids coexisted and competed for food resources, whereas in the Lower Level hyaenas were practically absent, and the main modifying agent was early Homo.Universidad de Málaga. Hominins, mammoths, saber-tooths and giant hyenas in the Early Pleistocene of the Baza Basin (SE Spain)

    Get PDF
The Baza Basin preserves an exceptional Plio-Pleis- tocene palaeontological record, which includes the earliest evidence of human presence in western Eu- rope, dated to ~1.4 Ma, coming from the sites of Barranco León and Fuente Nueva-3, in the vicinity of the town of Orce. In this geographical region, early Homo coexisted and likely competed with the giant, short-faced hyena Pachycrocuta brevirostris for the exploitation of prey carcasses abandoned by saber-tooth cats (Megantereon and Homotheri- um). The presence of these hypercarnivorous felids favored the surviving of both scavenging species (Homo and Pachycrocuta), as they exploited their prey to a lesser extent than the living pantherine felids. In this context, proboscideans were an ex- ploited food resource, as evidenced by the presence of a partial skeleton of the mammoth Mammuthus meridionalis in Fuente Nueva-3, which was sur- rounded by lithic artifacts and hyena coprolites. This association suggests that both hominins and hyenas fed on the mammoth carcass. Some paths for elucidating their pattern of access to these re- sources are also discussed. The symposium and the volume "Human-elephant interactions: from past to present" were funded by the Volkswagen Foundation
