    Phase-edge properties and complementizer omission

    This paper deals with the diachrony of complementizer omission (C-omission) in some Italian clauses. C-omission is restricted to clauses with [-realis] mood in Old as well as in Modern Italian, and to some types of declarative clauses in Modern Florentine (Cocchi & Poletto, 2005). This phenomenon is instead much more pervasive in the Renaissance period (Wanner 1981, Scorretti 1991) and invests basically all types of subordinate clauses. The present study concentrates on C-omission in Renaissance Italian relative clauses, which is attested in both subject and non-subject extractions. There is a subject/non-subject asymmetry in the frequency of C-omission in relative clauses, which is claimed to result from the combination of an active vs. inactive distinction that characterizes both Old and Renaissance Italian, and the loss of V-to-C. The active vs. inactive distinction is attributed to the presence of a strong (*) feature on the low-phase head, v*, in both Old and Renaissance Italian, while the loss of (*) in CP determines the loss of V-to-C in Renaissance Italian only. The argument is corroborated by further comparative facts from Old Occitan and Old French, as well as by a contrast with Old Portuguese and Old Spanish

    Environmental complexity: A buffer against stress in the domestic chick

    Birds kept in commercial production systems can be exposed to multiple stressors from early life and this alters the development of different morphological, immunological and behavioural indicators. We explore the hypothesis that provision of a complex environment during early life, better prepares birds to cope with stressful events as well as buffers them against future unpredictable stressful episodes. In this study, 96 one day old pullets were randomly distributed in eight pens (12 birds/pen). Half of the chicks (N = 48) were assigned to a Complex Environment (CENV: with perches, a dark brooder etc.) the others to a Simple Environment (SENV: without enrichment features). Half of the birds from each of these treatments were assigned to a No Stress (NSTR, 33C) or to an acute Cold Stress (CSTR, 18–20C) treatment during six hours on their second day of life. At four weeks of age, chicks with these four different backgrounds were exposed to an Intermittent Stressful Challenges Protocol (ISCP). In an immunological test indicative of pro-inflammatory status Phytohe-magglutinin-P (PHA-P), the response of CSTR birds was ameliorated by rearing chicks in a CENV as they had a similar response to NSTR chicks and a significantly better pro-inflammatory response than those CSTR birds reared in a SENV (five days after the CSTR treatment was applied). A similar better response when coping with new challenges (the ISCP) was observed in birds reared in a CENV compared to those from a SENV. Birds reared in the CENV had a lower heterophil/lymphocyte ratio after the ISCP than birds reared in SENV, independently of whether or not they had been exposed to CSTR early in life. No effects of stress on general behaviour were detected, however, the provision of a CENV increased resting behaviour, which may have favoured stress recover. Additionally, we found that exposure to cold stress at an early age might have rendered birds more vulnerable to future stressful events. CSTR birds had lower humoral immune responses (sheep red blood cells induced antibodies) after the ISCP and started using elevated structures in the CENV later compared to their NSTR conspecifics. Our study reflects the importance of the early provision of a CENV in commercial conditions to reduce negative stress-related effects. Within the context of the theory of adaptive plasticity, our results suggest that the early experience of the birds had long lasting effects on the modulation of their phenotypes.Fil: Campderrich, Irene.     SUMOylation regulates LKB1 localization and its oncogenic activity in liver cancer

    BACKGROUND: Even though liver kinase B1 (LKB1) is usually described as a tumor suppressor in a wide variety of tissues, it has been shown that LKB1 aberrant expression is associated with bad prognosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Herein we have overexpressed LKB1 in human hepatoma cells and by using histidine pull-down assay we have investigated the role of the hypoxia-related post-translational modification of Small Ubiquitin-related Modifier (SUMO)ylation in the regulation of LKB1 oncogenic role. Molecular modelling between LKB1 and its interactors, involved in regulation of LKB1 nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and LKB1 activity, was performed. Finally, high affinity SUMO binding entities-based technology were used to validate our findings in a pre-clinical mouse model and in clinical HCC. FINDINGS: We found that in human hepatoma cells under hypoxic stress, LKB1 overexpression increases cell viability and aggressiveness in association with changes in LKB1 cellular localization. Moreover, by using site-directed mutagenesis, we have shown that LKB1 is SUMOylated by SUMO-2 at Lys178 hampering LKB1 nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and fueling hepatoma cell growth. Molecular modelling of SUMO modified LKB1 further confirmed steric impedance between SUMOylated LKB1 and the STe20-Related ADaptor cofactor (STRADα), involved in LKB1 export from the nucleus. Finally, we provide evidence that endogenous LKB1 is modified by SUMO in pre-clinical mouse models of HCC and clinical HCC, where LKB1 SUMOylation is higher in fast growing tumors. INTERPRETATION: Overall, SUMO-2 modification of LKB1 at Lys178 mediates LKB1 cellular localization and its oncogenic role in liver cancer.     The bHLH transcription factors TSAR1 and TSAR2 regulate triterpene saponin biosynthesis in Medicago truncatula

    Plants respond to stresses by producing a broad spectrum of bioactive specialized metabolites. Hormonal elicitors, such as jasmonates, trigger a complex signaling circuit leading to the concerted activation of specific metabolic pathways. However, for many specialized metabolic pathways, the transcription factors involved remain unknown. Here, we report on two homologous jasmonate-inducible transcription factors of the basic helix-loop-helix family, TRITERPENE SAPONIN BIOSYNTHESIS ACTIVATING REGULATOR1 (TSAR1) and TSAR2, which direct triterpene saponin biosynthesis in Medicago truncatula. TSAR1 and TSAR2 are coregulated with and transactivate the genes encoding 3-HYDROXY-3-METHYLGLUTARYL-COENZYME A REDUCTASE1 (HMGR1) and MAKIBISHI1, the rate-limiting enzyme for triterpene biosynthesis and an E3 ubiquitin ligase that controls HMGR1 levels, respectively. Transactivation is mediated by direct binding of TSARs to the N-box in the promoter of HMGR1. In transient expression assays in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) protoplasts, TSAR1 and TSAR2 exhibit different patterns of transactivation of downstream triterpene saponin biosynthetic genes, hinting at distinct functionalities within the regulation of the pathway. Correspondingly, overexpression of TSAR1 or TSAR2 in M. truncatula hairy roots resulted in elevated transcript levels of known triterpene saponin biosynthetic genes and strongly increased the accumulation of triterpene saponins. TSAR2 overexpression specifically boosted hemolytic saponin biosynthesis, whereas TSAR1 overexpression primarily stimulated nonhemolytic soyasaponin biosynthesis. Both TSARs also activated all genes of the precursor mevalonate pathway but did not affect sterol biosynthetic genes, pointing to their specific role as regulators of specialized triterpene metabolism in M. truncatula

    El Lean Manufacturing es un sistema de gestión que se compone de diferentes herramientas utilizadas para la eliminación de todos los desperdicios que puede tener una fábrica. Este trabajo consiste en la implantación: de las 5S y la estandarización de operaciones. La implantación de las 5S es por fases: fase 0 (formación del personal), fase 1 (reconocimiento de la ZONA 5S), fase 2 (implantación de una S por semana, es decir, 5 semanas de implantación en total), fase 3 (seguimiento). La estandarización de operaciones también se implanta por fases: fase 0 (formación del personal), fase 1 (situación inicial), fase 2 (rediseño e implantación del lay out) y fase 3 (seguimiento). Tutor: Mar Llorens[spa] El Plan de dinamización “Gibraleón Capital del Odiel” surge como respuesta a la ineficiencia de las políticas patrimoniales que, regida por intereses políticos han mermado la gobernanza local e infravalorado el potencial de los recursos bioculturales de Gibraleón. El proyecto pretende abrir nuevos lineamientos en el ámbito de la gestión y del patrimonio biocultural como herramienta para alcanzar los ODS de Naciones Unidas. Se busca la participación de los actores locales y su inclusión en la gestión del procomún explorando estrategias de gestión alternativas y alterpatrimoniales que han tratando de investigar sobre los diferentes niveles de participación. Un análisis que invita a reflexionar sobre el beneficio social del patrimonio y el potencial de la participación ciudadana en la gestión patrimonial, pero alerta de su instrumentalización por los discursos autorizados del poder que enmascaran intereses políticos y fines lucrativos bajo supuestas prácticas bottom-up (Corral & Fraile, 2018; Navajas Corral & Fernández Fernández, 2019; Sánchez-Carretero et al., 2019) que sirven de herramienta para legitimar la voz autorizada (González-Ruibal, 2014) mediante la institucionalización de los procesos “alterpatrimoniales”.[eng] The revitalization plan, Gibraleón, Capital of El Odiel, arises as a response to the inadequacy of heritage policies that, governed by political interests, have undermined local governance and undervalued the potential of Gibraleón's biocultural resources. The project aims to open new guidelines in the field of management and biocultural heritage as tools to achieve the SDGs of the United Nations. It seeks local participation and inclusion in the management of the commons by exploring alternative and alter-heritage management strategies that have focused on investigating different levels of participation. An analysis that invites reflection on the social benefit of heritage and the potential of citizen participation in heritage management, but warns of its instrumentalization by the authorized discourses of power that mask political interests and private economic gain under alleged bottom-up practices (Corral & Fraile, 2018; Navajas Corral & Fernández Fernández, 2019; Sánchez-Carretero et al., 2019) that serve as a tool to legitimize the authorized voice (González-Ruibal, 2014) through the institutionalization of "alter-heritage" processes

    Dopamine in health and disease: much more than a neurotransmitter

    Dopamine is derived from an amino acid, phenylalanine, which must be obtained through the diet. Dopamine, known primarily to be a neurotransmitter involved in almost any higher executive action, acts through five types of G-protein-coupled receptors. Dopamine has been studied extensively for its neuronal handling, synaptic actions, and in relation to Parkinson's disease. However, dopamine receptors can be found extra-synaptically and, in addition, they are not only expressed in neurons, but in many types of mammalian cells, inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS). Recent studies show a dopamine link between the gut and the CNS; the mechanisms are unknown, but they probably require cells to act as mediators and the involvement of the immune system. In fact, dopamine receptors are expressed in almost any cell of the immune system where dopamine regulates various processes, such as antigen presentation, T-cell activation, and inflammation. This likely immune cell-mediated linkage opens up a new perspective for the use of dopamine-related drugs, i.e., agonist

    En este texto realizo un análisis de los desplazamientos de los hombres tojolabales de sus lugares de origen, quienes en un principio lo hicieron de manera voluntaria, en busca de trabajo remunerado, a las regiones de la denominada zona caliente, en donde se encontraba asentado ya el protestantismo. En esos lugares se convirtieron al protestantismo y posteriormente lograron convencer a sus familias, para luego extender su credo hacia la población en general. Con el tiempo, estos cambios de afiliación religiosa provocaron algunas salidas del territorio de manera voluntaria y después la expulsión de cientos de personas, quienes se trasladaron a la cabecera municipal de Las Margaritas y a Comitán, Chiapas
