    The forward-backward asymmetry of top quark production at the Tevatron in warped extra dimensional models

    The CDF and D0 experiments have reported on the measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of top quark pair production at the Tevatron and the result is that it is more than 2 standard deviations above the predicted value in the Standard Model. This has to be added to the longstanding anomaly in the forward-backward asymmetry for bottom quark production at LEP which is 3 standard deviations different from the Standard Model value. The discrepancy in the bottom asymmetry can be accounted for by the contributions of Kaluza-Klein excitations of electroweak gauge bosons at LEP in warped extra dimensional models in which the fermions are localized differently along the extra dimension so that the gauge interactions of heavy third generation fermions are naturally different from that of light fermions. In this paper, we show that it is more difficult to elaborate a model generating a significant top asymmetry in a similar way -- through exchanges of Kaluza-Klein gluons at the Tevatron -- due to the indirect constraints originating from precision electroweak data.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, published versio

    Collisions of uniformly distributed identifiers with an application to MAC address anonymization

    The main contribution of this paper consists in theoretical approximations of the collision rate of nn random identifiers uniformly distributed in m(>n)m (> n) buckets---along with bounds on the approximation errors. A secondary contribution is a decentralized anonymization system of media access control (MAC) addresses with a low collision rate. The main contribution supports the secondary one in that it quantifies its collision rate, thereby allowing designers to minimize mm while attaining specific collision rates. Recent works in crowd monitoring based on WiFi probe requests, for which collected MAC addresses should be anonymized, have inspired this research

    Mixture of Kernels and Iterated Semidirect Product of Diffeomorphisms Groups

    In the framework of large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping (LDDMM), we develop a multi-scale theory for the diffeomorphism group based on previous works. The purpose of the paper is (1) to develop in details a variational approach for multi-scale analysis of diffeomorphisms, (2) to generalise to several scales the semidirect product representation and (3) to illustrate the resulting diffeomorphic decomposition on synthetic and real images.     Orthogonal modification of polymer chain-ends via sequential nitrile oxide–alkyne and azide–alkyne Huisgen cycloadditions

    The α- and ω-chain-ends of well-defined polystyrene chains were functionalized using consecutive Huisgen cycloadditions. Firstly, an α-alkyne, ω-azido heterotelechelic polystyrene precursor was synthesized in three steps: (i) atom transfer radical polymerization in the presence of (1,1,1-trimethylsilyl)-2-propynyl 2-bromo-2-isobutyrate, (ii) deprotection of the alkyne function of the initiator and (iii) nucleophilic substitution of the bromine chain-end of the polymer with sodium azide. Afterwards, the chain-ends of the polymer were modified by successive nitrile oxide–alkyne cycloaddition (NOAC) and copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). 2 Model building blocks were tested for NOAC, while 4 building blocks were studied for CuAAC. In all cases, the orthogonal combination of NOAC and CuAAC allowed the preparation of tailored heterotelechelic polymers

    Landscape features drive insectivorous bat activity in Indian rice fields

    Context Insectivorous bats have been shown to control a number of agricultural insect pests. As bats exhibit species-specific responses to the surrounding landscape, tied closely to their morphology and foraging mode, the activity and distribution patterns of bats, and consequently the ecosystem services they provide, are influenced by the landscape characteristics. Objectives This study aims to determine which features in the landscape surrounding rice fields influence the activity levels of insectivorous bats, and at what scales they are most influential. Methods We collected acoustic recordings to determine activity levels of seven bat sonotypes in rice fields surrounded by a variety of land-cover types in the Nagaon district of Assam, India. Using this, we determined the most important set of features in the surrounding landscape, and the scales at which had the strongest impact, for each sonotype. Results Our results suggest that tree cover variables are the most important predictors of bat activity in rice fields. Distance to nearest forest, area of forest within 1 km, distance to nearest forest edge, and landscape heterogeneity influenced all five of the analysed bat sonotypes. Also important were the amount of urban land within 1 km, which exerted a negative effect on the activity of one sonotype, and moonlight activity, which negatively influenced the activity levels of one sonotype. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that when flying over rice fields, bat activity is most influenced by presence and proximity of trees. Therefore, increasing tree cover in agricultural landscapes will increase bat activity and likely the level of pest control

    The epidemiology of Leishmania donovani infection in high transmission foci in India.

    OBJECTIVE: Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is highly prevalent in Bihar, India. India and its neighbours aim at eliminating VL, but several knowledge gaps in the epidemiology of VL may hamper that effort. The prevalence of asymptomatic infections with Leishmania donovani and their role in transmission dynamics are not well understood. We report data from a sero-survey in Bihar. METHODS: Demographic and immunological surveys were carried out in July and November 2006, respectively in 16 highly VL endemic foci in Muzaffarpur district in Bihar. Household and individual information was gathered and capillary blood samples were collected on filter papers. Direct agglutination test (DAT) was used to determine infected individuals (cut-off titre 1:1600). DAT results were tabulated against individual and household variables. A multivariate generalized estimating equation (GEE) model was used to study the prevalence of serologically positive individuals taking into account the clustering at household and cluster levels. RESULTS: Of study subjects 18% were DAT positive, and this proportion increased with age. Women had a significantly lower prevalence than men >14 years old. Owning domestic animals (cows, buffaloes or goats) was associated with a higher risk of being DAT positive [OR 1.16 (95% CI 1.01-1.32)], but socio-economic status was not. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of leishmanial antibodies was high in these communities, but variable. Demographic factors (i.e. marriage) may explain the lower DAT positivity in women >14 years of age. Within these homogeneously poor communities, socio-economic status was not linked to L. donovani infection risk at the individual level, but ownership of domestic animals was

    Insectivorous bats in Indian rice fields respond to moonlight, temperature, and insect activity

    ABSTRACT: Context - Rice, India’s most widely grown crop, suffers substantial and increasing yield loss to insect pests. Insectivorous bats are known suppressors of insect pests, providing significant economic value to agricultural systems worldwide, yet their ecology in Indian agricultural landscapes is poorly understood. Objectives - We assess the influence of key biotic and abiotic factors on the activity of insectivorous bats over the growing season and within a night in a rice cultivation landscape. Methods - Passive acoustic recorders were used to track bat activity in a rice field in the Sonitpur district of Assam, India. We used generalised linear mixed models to analyse the effect of temperature, insect activity, and moonlight intensity on the activity of six bat sonotypes. We also used a multimodal analysis to describe the within-night activity patterns of these sonotypes. Results - Minimum nightly temperature and moonlight intensity had a positive and negative influence, respectively, on the activity of six bat sonotypes, while the activity of four bat sonotypes increased with insect activity. Within-night activity showed one of two patterns: three sonotypes displayed a dusk peak in activity, while the three other sonotypes were active through the night. Conclusion - The potential to maximise natural pest control in agricultural landscapes can only be realised through understanding the ecology of natural enemies in these landscapes. Our findings suggest that bats in rice fields are tracking insects over a season and within a night, pointing to a valuable ecosystem service in Indian agriculture that is yet to be quantified.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Reversible Trapping of Colloids in Microgrooved Channels via Diffusiophoresis under Steady-State Solute Gradients

    The controlled transport of colloids in dead-end structures is a key capability that can enable a wide range of applications, such as bio-chemical analysis, drug delivery and underground oil recovery. This letter presents a new trapping mechanism that allows the fast (i.e., within a few minutes) and reversible accumulation of sub-micron particles within dead-end micro-grooves by means of parallel streams with different salinity level. For the first time, particle focusing in dead-end structures is achieved under steady-state gradients. Confocal microscopy analysis and numerical investigations show that the particles are trapped at a flow recirculation region within the grooves due to a combination of diffusiophoresis transport and hydrodynamic effects. Counterintuitively, the particle velocity at the focusing point is not vanishing and, hence, the particles are continuously transported in and out of the focusing point. The accumulation process is also reversible and one can cyclically trap and release the colloids by controlling the salt concentration of the streams via a flow switching valve.Comment: Manuscript under review. 6 pages, 5 figures + Supplementary Informatio

    Garbage is defined as something that is not used anymore, unused, or something that is thrown away, which is derived from human activities and does not happen by itself. The market is one of the human activities that produce large amounts of garbage every day, when the waste sorting system is not good, it will make it difficult to carry out waste management and will have an impact on health directly or indirectly. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the participation of traders in waste sorting in Tampan Sub district  Pasar Baru  Pekanbaru.This study is quantitative research with cross sectional design. This research was conducted April 2015, sample in this study is 79 merchants. Data were collected by using questionnaires and observation. Data analysis for bivariate with chi-square test with 95% confidence level with α = 0.05. The results showed that there is a relationship between education (OR = 2,60  ; CI: 1,08-3,67),  socialization  (OR = 3,10; CI: 2,58-5,99) availability of trash waste (OR = 8,25 ; CI: 2,98-7,55 with waste sorting participation

    Continuous Manipulation and Characterization of Colloidal Beads and Liposomes via Diffusiophoresis in Single- and Double-Junction Microchannels

    We reveal a physical mechanism that enables the preconcentration, sorting, and characterization of charged polystyrene nanobeads and liposomes dispersed in a continuous flow within a straight micron-sized channel. Initially, a single Κ-junction microfluidic chip is used to generate a steady-state salt concentration gradient in the direction perpendicular to the flow. As a result, fluorescent nanobeads dispersed in the electrolyte solutions accumulate into symmetric regions of the channel, appearing as two distinct symmetric stripes when the channel is observed from the top via epi-fluorescence microscopy. Depending on the electrolyte flow configuration and, thus, the direction of the salt concentration gradient field, the fluorescent stripes get closer to or apart from each other as the distance from the inlet increases. Our numerical and experimental analysis shows that although nanoparticle diffusiophoresis and hydrodynamic effects are involved in the accumulation process, diffusio-osmosis along the top and bottom channel walls plays a crucial role in the observed particles dynamics. In addition, we developed a proof-of-concept double Κ-junction microfluidic device that exploits this accumulation mechanism for the size-based separation and size detection of nanobeads as well as for the measurement of zeta potential and charged lipid composition of liposomes under continuous flow settings. This device is also used to investigate the effect of fluid-like or gel-like states of the lipid membranes on the liposome diffusiophoretic response. The proposed strategy for solute-driven manipulation and characterization of colloids has great potential for microfluidic bioanalytical testing applications, including bioparticle preconcentration, sorting, sensing, and analysis
