On the Coexistence of Diagonal and off-Diagonal Long-Range Order, a Monte Carlo Study
The zero temperature properties of interacting 2 dimensional lattice bosons
are investigated. We present Monte Carlo data for soft-core bosons that
demonstrate the existence of a phase in which crystalline long-range order and
off-diagonal long-range order (superfluidity) coexist. We comment on the
difference between hard and soft-core bosons and compare our data to mean-field
results that predict a larger coexistence region. Furthermore, we determine the
critical exponents for the various phase transitions.Comment: 7 pages and 8 figures appended in postscript, KA-TFP-93-0
Critical Exponents for Three-Dimensional Superfluid--Bose-Glass Phase Transition
The critical phenomenon of the zero temperature superfluid--Bose-glass phase
transition for hard-core bosons on a three-dimensional disordered lattice is
studied using a quantum real-space renormalization-group method. The
correlation-length exponent and the dynamic exponent z are computed. The
critical exponent z is found to be 2.5 for compressible states and 1.3 for
incompressible states. The exponent is shown to be insensitive to z as
that in the two-dimensional case, and has value roughly equal to 1.Comment: 11 pages, REVTE
Disordered Boson Systems: A Perturbative Study
A hard-core disordered boson system is mapped onto a quantum spin 1/2
XY-model with transverse random fields. It is then generalized to a system of
spins with an arbitrary magnitude S and studied through a 1/S expansion. The
first order 1/S expansion corresponds to a spin-wave theory. The effect of weak
disorder is studied perturbatively within such a first order 1/S scheme. We
compute the reduction of the speed of sound and the life time of the Bloch
phonons in the regime of weak disorder. Generalizations of the present study to
the strong disordered regime are discussed.Comment: 27 pages, revte
Disordered Bosons: Condensate and Excitations
The disordered Bose Hubbard model is studied numerically within the
Bogoliubov approximation. First, the spatially varying condensate wavefunction
in the presence of disorder is found by solving a nonlinear Schrodinger
equation. Using the Bogoliubov approximation to find the excitations above this
condensate, we calculate the condensate fraction, superfluid density, and
density of states for a two-dimensional disordered system. These results are
compared with experiments done with adsorbed in porous media.Comment: RevTeX, 26 pages and 10 postscript figures appended (Figure 9 has

Criticality in confined ionic fluids
A theory of a confined two dimensional electrolyte is presented. The positive
and negative ions, interacting by a potential, are constrained to move on
an interface separating two solvents with dielectric constants and
. It is shown that the Debye-H\"uckel type of theory predicts that
the this 2d Coulomb fluid should undergo a phase separation into a coexisting
liquid (high density) and gas (low density) phases. We argue, however, that the
formation of polymer-like chains of alternating positive and negative ions can
prevent this phase transition from taking place.Comment: RevTex, no figures, in press Phys. Rev.
A Gaussian Theory of Superfluid--Bose-Glass Phase Transition
We show that gaussian quantum fluctuations, even if infinitesimal, are
sufficient to destroy the superfluidity of a disordered boson system in 1D and
2D. The critical disorder is thus finite no matter how small the repulsion is
between particles. Within the gaussian approximation, we study the nature of
the elementary excitations, including their density of states and mobility edge
transition. We give the gaussian exponent at criticality in 1D and show
that its ratio to of the pure system is universal.Comment: Revtex 3.0, 11 pages (4 figures will be sent through airmail upon

Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies from Scaling Seeds: Global Defect Models
We investigate the global texture model of structure formation in cosmogonies
with non-zero cosmological constant for different values of the Hubble
parameter. We find that the absence of significant acoustic peaks and little
power on large scales are robust predictions of these models. However, from a
careful comparison with data we conclude that at present we cannot safely
reject the model on the grounds of present CMB data. Exclusion by means of
galaxy correlation data requires assumptions on biasing and statistics. New,
very stringent constraints come from peculiar velocities.
Investigating the large-N limit, we argue that our main conclusions apply to
all global O(N) models of structure formation.Comment: LaTeX file with RevTex, 27 pages, 23 eps figs., submitted to Phys.

Directed geometrical worm algorithm applied to the quantum rotor model
We discuss the implementation of a directed geometrical worm algorithm for
the study of quantum link-current models. In this algorithm Monte Carlo updates
are made through the biased reptation of a worm through the lattice. A directed
algorithm is an algorithm where, during the construction of the worm, the
probability for erasing the immediately preceding part of the worm, when adding
a new part,is minimal. We introduce a simple numerical procedure for minimizing
this probability. The procedure only depends on appropriately defined local
probabilities and should be generally applicable. Furthermore we show how
correlation functions, C(r,tau) can be straightforwardly obtained from the
probability of a worm to reach a site (r,tau) away from its starting point
independent of whether or not a directed version of the algorithm is used.
Detailed analytical proofs of the validity of the Monte Carlo algorithms are
presented for both the directed and un-directed geometrical worm algorithms.
Results for auto-correlation times and Green functions are presented for the
quantum rotor model.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, v2 : Additional results and data calculated at

Nature of the quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional hardcore boson model
We use two Quantum Monte Carlo algorithms to map out the phase diagram of the
two-dimensional hardcore boson Hubbard model with near () and next near
() neighbor repulsion. At half filling we find three phases: Superfluid
(SF), checkerboard solid and striped solid depending on the relative values of
, and the kinetic energy. Doping away from half filling, the
checkerboard solid undergoes phase separation: The superfluid and solid phases
co-exist but not as a single thermodynamic phase. As a function of doping, the
transition from the checkerboard solid is therefore first order. In contrast,
doping the striped solid away from half filling instead produces a striped
supersolid phase: Co-existence of density order with superfluidity as a single
phase. One surprising result is that the entire line of transitions between the
SF and checkerboard solid phases at half filling appears to exhibit dynamical
O(3) symmetry restoration. The transitions appear to be in the same
universality class as the special Heisenberg point even though this symmetry is
explicitly broken by the interaction.Comment: 10 pages, 14 eps figures, include
