Modified Halloysite Nanotubes: Nanoarchitectures for Enhancing the Capture of Oils from Vapor and Liquid Phases
We prepared hybrid halloysite nanotubes (HNT/sodium alkanoates) in which the inner cavity of the nanoclay was selectively modified. Physicochemical studies evidenced the interactions between HNT and sodium alkanoates, ruled out clay exfoliation, quantified the amount of the loaded substance, and showed an increase of the total net negative charge, allowing us to obtain rather stable aqueous nanoclay dispersions. These dispersions were exploited as inorganic micelles to capture hydrocarbon and aromatic oils in the vapor and liquid states and were revealed to be nonfoaming but very efficient in encapsulating oils. Here, we have fabricated biocompatibile and low-cost inorganic micelles that can be exploited for industrial applications on a large scale
Sredozemni morski puž Tritonova truba, Charonia lampas lampas (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda): izvješće o akvarijskom uzgoju
Two females and a male triton of Charonia lampas lampas (Linnaeus, 1758) were collected from March 2010 to September 2012 in S. Raineri peninsula in Messina, (Sicily, Italy). They were reared in a tank at the Aquarium of Messina. Mussels, starfish, and holothurians were provided as feed for the tritons. Spawning occurred in November 2012, lasted for 15 days, yielding a total number of 500 egg capsules, with approximately 2.0-3.0 x 103 eggs/capsule. The snail did not eat during the month, in which spawned. Spawning behavior and larval development of the triton was described.Dvije ženke i mužjak puža Tritonova truba, Charonia lampas lampas

Study of the Fusion-Fission Process in the Reaction
Fusion-fission and fully energy-damped binary processes of the
Cl+Mg reaction were investigated using particle-particle
coincidence techniques at a Cl bombarding energy of E
8 MeV/nucleon. Inclusive data were also taken in order to determine the partial
wave distribution of the fusion process. The fragment-fragment correlation data
show that the majority of events arises from a binary-decay process with a
relatively large multiplicity of secondary light-charged particles emitted by
the two primary excited fragments in the exit channel. No evidence is observed
for ternary-breakup processes, as expected from the systematics recently
established for incident energies below 15 MeV/nucleon and for a large number
of reactions. The binary-process results are compared with predictions of
statistical-model calculations. The calculations were performed using the
Extended Hauser-Feshbach method, based on the available phase space at the
scission point of the compound nucleus. This new method uses
temperature-dependent level densities and its predictions are in good agreement
with the presented experimental data, thus consistent with the fusion-fission
origin of the binary fully-damped yields.Comment: 30 pages standard REVTeX file, 10 eps Figures; to be published at the

Statistical Binary Decay of Cl + Mg at 8 MeV/nucleon
The properties of the two-body channels in the Cl + Mg reaction
at a bombarding energy of 275 MeV have been investigated by using
fragment-fragment coincident techniques. The exclusive data show that the
majority of events arises from a binary-decay process. The rather large number
of secondary light charged-particles emitted from the two excited exit
fragments are cnsistent with the expectations of the Extended Hauser-Feshbach
Method. No evidence for the occurence of ternary break-up events is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 3 Figures available upon request To be published at Z. Phys.
Dipolar degrees of freedom and Isospin equilibration processes in Heavy Ion collisions
Background: In heavy ion collision at the Fermi energies Isospin
equilibration processes occur- ring when nuclei with different charge/mass
asymmetries interacts have been investigated to get information on the
nucleon-nucleon Iso-vectorial effective interaction. Purpose: In this paper,
for the system 48Ca +27 Al at 40 MeV/nucleon, we investigate on this process by
means of an observable tightly linked to isospin equilibration processes and
sensitive in exclusive way to the dynamical stage of the collision. From the
comparison with dynamical model calculations we want also to obtain information
on the Iso-vectorial effective microscopic interaction. Method: The average
time derivative of the total dipole associated to the relative motion of all
emitted charged particles and fragments has been determined from the measured
charges and velocities by using the 4? multi-detector CHIMERA. The average has
been determined for semi- peripheral collisions and for different charges Zb of
the biggest produced fragment. Experimental evidences collected for the systems
27Al+48Ca and 27Al+40Ca at 40 MeV/nucleon used to support this novel method of
investigation are also discussed.Comment: Submitted for publication on Phys. Rev. C. 0n 24-oct-201
The EARTHCRUISERS project (EARTH CRUst Imagery for investigating SEismicity, volcanism and marine natural Resources in the Sicilian offshore)
The EARTHCRUISERS project was developed for the MIUR’s call “Progetti Premiali 2015” by the “Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale” (Trieste, Italy) in collaboration with the “Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo” (Catania, Italy) and “Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn” (Naples, Italy).
The main goals of the project are: (i) to identify and characterize the main crustal tectonic structures offshore Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, (ii) to better understand the geodynamic processes controlling seismicity and volcanism affecting this region, and (iii) to furnish a useful tool to estimate seismic, tsunamigenic and volcanic hazard in the highly populated coastal sectors. Furthermore, in order to contribute at the Blue Growth objectives, the project aims to analyze some relevant issues related to mineral prospecting offshore, such as the characterization of the hydrothermal systems in the Tyrrhenian Sea and the impact of the exploitation of oil and gas fields on the marine environment in the Sicily Channel.
To achieve these objectives the acquisition of multibeam and sidescan sonar, multichannel seismic reflection, magnetic and gravimetric data is planned. Nearly 2500 km of multichannel seismic reflection lines will be acquired during the project in the Marsili Basin (Tyrrhenian Sea) and Mt. Etna offshore. This large amount of data will allow to: better understand the relationship between tectonics and evolution of volcanism; identify active faults and volcanic bodies; better constrain the seismostratigraphic and structural setting of the study areas, and investigate the eventual occurrence of unstable volcanic slopes which could lead to landslide and tsunami.
Finally, the deployment offshore southeastern Sicily of a temporary Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) network will carry out for monitoring the natural seismicity in the area of VEGA platform, the largest oil extraction site in Italian seas. Data collected will be used to study the eventual correlation between local seismicity and oil extractive activities.PublishedRome2T. Deformazione crostale attiv
Correlation functions and emission time sequence of light charged particles from projectile-like fragment source in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions
Two-particle correlation functions, involving protons, deuterons, tritons,
and alpha-particles, have been measured at very forward angles (0.7 deg <
theta_lab < 7 deg), in order to study projectile-like fragment (PLF) emission
in E/A = 44 and 77 MeV 40Ar + 27Al collisions. Peaks, originating from
resonance decays, are larger at E/A = 44 than at 77 MeV. This reflects the
larger relative importance of independently emitted light particles, as
compared to two-particle decay from unstable fragments, at the higher beam
energy. The time sequence of the light charged particles, emitted from the PLF,
has been deduced from particle-velocity-gated correlation functions (discarding
the contribution from resonance decays). Alpha-particles are found to have an
average emission time shorter than protons but longer than tritons and
deuterons.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Nuclear Physics
Projected Quasi-particle Perturbation theory
The BCS and/or HFB theories are extended by treating the effect of four
quasi-particle states perturbatively. The approach is tested on the pairing
hamiltonian, showing that it combines the advantage of standard perturbation
theory valid at low pairing strength and of non-perturbative approaches
breaking particle number valid at higher pairing strength. Including the
restoration of particle number, further improves the description of pairing
correlation. In the presented test, the agreement between the exact solution
and the combined perturbative + projection is almost perfect. The proposed
method scales friendly when the number of particles increases and provides a
simple alternative to other more complicated approaches
