System dynamics modelling in systems biology and applications in pharmacology

El modelado matemático de sistemas biológicos complejos es uno de los temas clave en la Biología de Sistemas y varios métodos computacionales basados ​​en la simulación computarizada han sido aplicados hasta ahora para determinar el comportamiento de los sistemas no lineales. La Dinamica de Sistemas es una metodología de modelado intuitivo basada en el razonamiento cualitativo por el cual un modelo conceptual se puede describir como un conjunto de relaciones de causa y efecto entre las variables de un sistema. A partir de esta estructura, es posible obtener un conjunto de ecuaciones dinámicas que describan cuantitativamente el comportamiento del sistema. Centrándose en los sistemas farmacológicos, el modelado compartimental a menudo se utiliza para resolver un amplio espectro de problemas relacionados con la distribución de materiales en los sistemas vivos en la investigación, el diagnóstico y la terapia en todo el cuerpo, los órganos y los niveles celulares. En este artículo presentamos la metodología de modelado de Dinámica del Sistema y su aplicación al modelado de un modelo compartimental farmacocinético-farmacodinámico del efecto de profundidad anestésica en pacientes sometidos a intervenciones quirúrgicas, derivando un modelo de simulación en el entorno de simulación orientada a objetos OpenModelica. Managerialism and fiction, or the fiction of managerialism: From Ayn Rand to novels for executives

The aim of management books is to propagate new theories in the field among company executives. Such publications are one of the pillars of managerialism. Perhaps the oddest manifestation of the phenomenon is novels focussing on senior executives heroically battling for business excellence through the application of a managerial technique. In this paper, we put this curious, rarely-explored literary genre under the spotlight. We not only analyse the salient features of such literature and its main ingredients but also highlight the major stylistic influence of Ayn Rand's works. The novels of this influential neo-Liberal writer foreshadowed the new narrative form.Los libros sobre management tienen como objetivo propagar nuevas teorías de gestión entre los directivos y ejecutivos de las empresas, y representa uno de los pilares del gerencialismo. Una de sus manifestaciones más peculiares es la ficción, esto es, novelas que se centran en historias de profesionales de corporaciones en las que estos tratan de alcanzar la excelencia en los negocios mediante una técnica gerencial. Debt and sacrifice: the role of scapegoats in the economic crises

Despite the process of secularization and modernization, in contemporary societies, the role of sacrifice is still relevant. One of the spaces where sacrifice actually performs a critical role is the realm of modern economy, particularly in the event of a financial crisis. Such crises represent situations defined by an outrageous symbolic violence in which social and economic relations experience drastic transformations, and their victims end up suffering personal bankruptcy, indebt-edness, lower standards of living or poverty. Crises show the flagrant domination present in social relations: this is proven in the way crises evolve, when more and more social groups marred by a growing vulnerability are sacrificed to appease financial markets. Inspired by the theoretical framework of the French anthropologist René Girard, our intention is to explore how the hegemonic nar-rative about the crisis has been developed, highlighting its sacrificial aspects.This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, grant number PGC2018-097200-B-I00

Robust symmetric multiplication for programmable analog VLSI array processing

This paper presents an electrically programmable analog multiplier. The circuit performs the multiplication between an input variable and an electrically selectable scaling factor. The multiplier is divided in several blocks: a linearized transconductor, binary weighted current mirrors and a differential to single-ended current adder. This paper shows the advantages introduced using a linearized OTA-based multiplier. The circuit presented renders higher linearity and symmetry in the output current than a previously reported single-transistor multiplier. A Focal-Plane Image Processor for Low Power Adaptive Capture and Analysis of the Visual Stimulus

Portable applications of artificial vision are limited by the fact that conventional processing schemes fail to meet the specifications under a tight power budget. A bio-inspired approach, based in the goal-directed organization of sensory organs found in nature, has been employed to implement a focal-plane image processor for low power vision applications. The prototype contains a multi-layered CNN structure concurrent with 32times32 photosensors with locally programmable integration time for adaptive image capture with on-chip local and global adaptation mechanisms. A more robust and linear multiplier block has been employed to reduce irregular analog wave propagation ought to asymmetric synapses. The predicted computing power per power consumption, 142MOPS/mW, is orders of magnitude above what rendered by conventional architectures

El imaginario managerial: El discurso de la fluidez en la sociedad económica

Este artículo intenta describir el denominado imaginario managerial, esto es, el conjunto de imágenes y representaciones míticas presentes en el discurso empresarial sobre las organizaciones. Estos elementos condensan distintas imágenes de la empresa y el trabajo, atribuyendo un sentido a la tarea misma de gestionar. Desde una perspectiva crítica, en este trabajo nos centraremos en los libros de gestión empresarial o literatura del management. En esta literatura no sólo se recogen de una manera nítida los ejes que articulan el imaginario social de los directivos de las empresas; además, examina su transformación histórica, en una transición desde un capitalismo sólido que enfatiza las jerarquías a otro líquido, basado en la fluidez y las redes.This article attempts to describe the so-called managerial imaginary, that is, the set of images and mythical representations present in the managerial discourse on organizations. These elements condense several images about labour and companies, confering a sense to the managing tasks. In this paper we will focus on the business books or management literature, from a critical approach. This literature does not just clearly highlight the axis that articulate the managers’ social imaginary. It also examines its historical transformation, in a transition from a solid capitalism which emphasizes hierarchies, to a liquid one based on fluidity and networks
