    Montanera fattening average daily gain of Silvela iberian pigs according to growing system

    Average daily gain during the montanera fattening period (grazing acorns and grass) of a flock of 84 pure Silvela Iberian pigs is analysed. A group was bred in an intensive system and the other one was bred in an traditional outdoor system. The results show better ADG in pigs from the traditional outdoor system but those confirm that is possible to obtain good performances with pigs from intensive system alter an adaptation to grazing period (0.87±0.02 kg versus 0.59±0.02 kg).Se analiza la ganancia media diaria a lo largo de los dos primeros meses de montanera de un grupo de 84 cerdos Ibéricos puros de la estirpe Silvela pertenecientes a dos grupos de recría diferentes: intensivo en parques y extensivo tradicional. Los resultados indican que se obtienen mejores resultados de ganancia media diaria con el sistema extensivo tradicional pero que es posible obtener buenos resultados con los cerdos procedentes del sistema intensivo, previa adaptación al pastoreo (0,87±0,02 kg versus 0,59±0,02 kg; p<0,001)

    Ultrasonography detection of pregnancy in outdoor iberian sows

    In a flock of pure Iberian sows, with outdoor breeding and total freedom, ultrasonography detection of pregnancy length is studied (11.1±0.6 seconds), according to pregnancy or not pregnancy (9.7 vs 20.4 seconds). Also, possible influence of cycle number is analysed. By other side permanence of ear tags after a year is valued (99.5%). Results show that indoor and intensive production is not justified in order to attain more reproductive control.En un rebaño de cerdas Ibéricas puras, criadas en régimen de total libertad (sin empleo de jaulas), se estudia el tiempo empleado en el diagnóstico de gestación con ecógrafo (11,1±0,6 segundos por cerda), se analiza la duración del diagnóstico dependiendo de si hay preñez o no (9,7 vs 20,4 segundos) y la posible influencia del número de ciclo. Por otra parte se valora la permanencia de los crotales de identificación individual tras un año (99,5%). Los resultados indican que la intensificación de la producción en esta raza no está justificada por la consecución de un mayor control reproductivo

    Iberian pig efficiency peeling acorns

    A functional character of Iberian pigs is their efficiency peeling acorns. This is analized with Iberian pigs on a sample of 40 evergreen oaks. The result is showed as percentage of pulp DM refuse and pulp weigh refuse (18.94±1.19% versus 0.53±0.04 g) with a high variation likely influenced by morphology and weight differences between acorns.Una de las características funcionales del cerdo Ibérico es su eficiencia al pelar las bellotas. Ésta se analiza a partir de cerdos Ibéricos y sobre muestras de 40 encinas. El resultado obtenido, porcentaje de desperdicio de MS de pulpa y peso de la MS de pulpa desperdiciada por bellota (18,94±1,19% versus 0,53±0,04 g) presenta una alta variación previsiblemente influenciada por las diferencias de la morfología y peso de las bellotas

    Contenidos transmedia de las teleseries españolas: clasificación, análisis y panorama en 2013

    En este artículo analizamos los contenidos transmedia que tienen como “nave nodriza” las series programadas por las cadenas de televisión tanto nacionales (La 1, Antena 3, Telecinco) como autonómicas (TV3, ETB, TVG, Canal Sur) con producción propia y de estreno en 2013. Son en total 33 títulos, entre los que se encuentran Aída, Frágiles, La que se avecina (Telecinco); El barco, Bandolera, Amar es para siempre, El tiempo entre costuras (Antena 3); Cuéntame, Gran Reserva, Isabel, Águila Roja (La 1), La riera, Polseres vermelles (TV3); DHB, Goenkale (ETB); Matalobos, Padre Casares (TVG) y Arrayán y Flamán (Canal Sur). Hacemos un repaso de los sites de las series, donde se concentran los contenidos transmedia, y proponemos una clasificación de la gran variedad de formatos encontrados, recurriendo a las distintas categorías de touchpoints que permiten el contacto del receptor con la narración televisiva fuera de la pequeña pantalla. Los resultados apuntan a una presencia abrumadora de los contenidos reenvasados o adaptados al nuevo medio o plataforma y a una escasa todavía expansión transmedial con contenidos inéditos, diferenciados por medio y narrativamente relevantes

    From chemosynthesis-based communities to cold-water corals: Vulnerable deep-sea habitats of the Gulf of Cádiz

    The Gulf of Cádiz (GoC) represents an area of ecological importance within the northeastern Atlantic Ocean due to the presence of Mediterranean and Atlantic water masses, a heterogeneous seafloor and a biological confluence. Nevertheless, information on the presence of vulnerable deep-sea habitats is still very scarce and it is of importance for further habitat monitoring within the context of the Habitats and Marine Strategy Framework Directives and for improving conservation and resource extraction management. From 2010 to 2012, fluid migration and emission related edifices (e.g., mud volcanoes, diapirs) from the Spanish continental margin of the GoC have been explored using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV; Liropus 2000) and an underwater camera sled (UCS; APHIA 2012) as well as several devices for collecting sediment and fauna. Different vulnerable deep-sea habitats have been observed, including anoxic bottoms with bacterial mats, sea-pen communities, sponge aggregations, antipatharian and gorgonian communities and also cold-water coral banks. Some of these habitats are included in conservation lists of the habitat directive and in international conventions (OSPAR, RAC/SPA), however some of them are located in areas of the GoC that are exposed to intense trawling. The diversity of habitats detected in the Spanish continental margin of the GoC highlights the importance of seepage related edifices as inducers of seabed and habitat heterogeneity in deep-sea areas.En prens

    The role of retinal fluid location in atrophy and fibrosis evolution of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration long-term treated in real world

    Purpose: To assess the effect of clinical factors on the development and progression of atrophy and fibrosis in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) receiving long-term treatment in the real world. Methods: An ambispective 36-month multicentre study, involving 359 nAMD patients from 17 Spanish hospitals treated according to the Spanish Vitreoretinal Society guidelines, was designed. The influence of demographic and clinical factors, including the presence and location of retinal fluid, on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and progression to atrophy and/or fibrosis were analysed. Results: After 36 months of follow-up and an average of 13.8 anti-VEGF intravitreal injections, the average BCVA gain was +1.5 letters, and atrophy and/or fibrosis were present in 54.8% of nAMD patients (OR = 8.54, 95% CI = 5.85-12.47, compared to baseline). Atrophy was associated with basal intraretinal fluid (IRF) (OR = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.09-3.20), whereas basal subretinal fluid (SRF) was associated with a lower rate of atrophy (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.23-0.71) and its progression (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.26-0.75), leading to a slow progression rate (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.14-0.83). Fibrosis development and progression were related to IRF at any visit (p < 0.001). In contrast, 36-month SRF was related to a lower rate of fibrosis (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.29-0.81) and its progression (OR = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.31-0.81). Conclusion: Atrophy and/or fibrosis were present in 1 of 2 nAMD patients treated for 3 years. Both, especially fibrosis, lead to vision loss. Subretinal fluid (SRF) was associated with good visual outcomes and lower rates of atrophy and fibrosis, whereas IRF yields worse visual results and a higher risk of atrophy and especially fibrosis in routine clinical practice

    Gate-tuneable and chirality-dependent charge-to-spin conversion in tellurium nanowires

    Chiral materials are an ideal playground for exploring the relation between symmetry, relativistic effects and electronic transport. For instance, chiral organic molecules have been intensively studied to electrically generate spin-polarized currents in the last decade, but their poor electronic conductivity limits their potential for applications. Conversely, chiral inorganic materials such as tellurium have excellent electrical conductivity, but their potential for enabling the electrical control of spin polarization in devices remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the all-electrical generation, manipulation and detection of spin polarization in chiral single-crystalline tellurium nanowires. By recording a large (up to 7%) and chirality-dependent unidirectional magnetoresistance, we show that the orientation of the electrically generated spin polarization is determined by the nanowire handedness and uniquely follows the current direction, while its magnitude can be manipulated by an electrostatic gate.     Biodiversity of Fusarium species in Mexico associated with ear rot in maize, and their identification using a phylogenetic approach

    Fusariumproliferatum, F. subglutinans, and F. verticillioides are known causes of ear and kernel rot in maize worldwide. In Mexico, only F. verticillioides and F. subglutinans, have been reported previously as causal agents of this disease. However, Fusarium isolates with different morphological characteristics to the species that are known to cause this disease were obtained in the Highland-Valley region of this country from symptomatic and symptomless ears of native and commercial maize genotypes. Moreover, while the morphological studies were not sufficient to identify the correct taxonomic position at the species level, analyses based in the Internal Transcribed Spacer region and the Nuclear Large Subunit Ribosomal partial sequences allowed for the identification of F. subglutinans, F. solani, and F. verticillioides, as well as four species (F. chlamydosporum, F. napiforme, F. poae, and F. pseudonygamai) that had not previously been reported to be associated with ear rot. In addition, F. napiforme and F. solani were absent from symptomless kernels. Phylogenetic analysis showed genetic changes in F. napiforme, and F. pseudonygamai isolates because they were not true clones, and probably constitute separate sibling species. The results of this study suggest that the biodiversity of Fusarium species involved in ear rot in Mexico is greater than that reported previously in other places in the world. This new knowledge will permit a better understanding of the relationship between all the species involved in ear rot disease and their relationship with maize

    Morphological characterization of submarine channels in the upper slope of the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Iberian Peninsula)

    New high-quality high-resolution bathymetric data along the northeastern slope of the Gulf of Cadiz continental margin reveals three gullies fields. The morphological and morphometric features of these gullies have been studied. The following morphometric variables have been measured in every gully in order to make a quantitative morphological analysis: width, depth, thalweg length, straight line length, area, sinuosity index, width/depth ratio, and stream order. The morphological characterization of the gullies suggests that these morphologies vary with the local physiography (concavity/convexity of the slope), the sediment transport efficiency, tectonic control and oceanographic regime.Versión del edito

    Geostatistical analysis of the submarine channels in the upper slope of the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Iberian Peninsula)

    Five different groups of gullies have been distinguished along the northeastern slope of the Gulf of Cádiz using geostatistical analysis. A Grouping Analyst has been carried out to six morphological variables of the gullies: area, straight line length, width/depth ratio, width, depth and stream order. The spatial distribution of the identified five groups and their mean characteristics have allowed us to propose an evolutionary model for the two zones of the upper continental slope. This model is related to the local physiography, the sediment supply, the tectonic control and the oceanographic regime.Versión del edito
