    Exploring multivariate data structures with local principal curves.

    A new approach to find the underlying structure of a multidimensional data cloud is proposed, which is based on a localized version of principal components analysis. More specifically, we calculate a series of local centers of mass and move through the data in directions given by the first local principal axis. One obtains a smooth ``local principal curve'' passing through the "middle" of a multivariate data cloud. The concept adopts to branched curves by considering the second local principal axis. Since the algorithm is based on a simple eigendecomposition, computation is fast and easy

    Analysis of the effects of baffles on combustion instability

    An analytical model has been developed for predicting the effects of baffles on combustion instability. This model has been developed by coupling an acoustic analysis of the wave motion within baffled chambers with a model for the oscillatory combustion response of a propellant droplet developed by Heidmann. A computer program was developed for numerical solution of the resultant coupled equations. Diagnostic calculations were made to determine the reasons for the improper prediction. These calculations showed that the chosen method of representing the combustion response was a very poor approximation. At the end of the program, attempts were made to minimize this effect but the model still improperly predicts the stability trends. Therefore, it is recommended that additional analysis be done with an improved approximation

    A two-mode single-atom laser is considered, with the aim of generating entanglement in macroscopic light. Two transitions in the four-level gain medium atom independently interact with the two cavity modes, while two other transitions are driven by control laser fields. Atomic relaxation as well as cavity losses are taken into account. We show that this system is a source of macroscopic entangled light over a wide range of control parameters and initial states of the cavity field

    A reappraisal of the morphology and systematic position of the theropod dinosaur Sigilmassasaurus from the "middle" Cretaceous of Morocco

    Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis is an enigmatic theropod dinosaur from the early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) of Morocco, originally based on a few isolated cervical vertebrae. Ever since its original description, both its taxonomic validity and systematic affinities were contentious. Originally considered to represent its own family, Sigilmassasauridae, the genus has variously been suggested to represent a carcharodontosaurid, an ornithischian, and, more recently, a spinosaurid. Here we describe new remains referrable to this taxon and re-evaluate its taxonomic status and systematic affinities. Based on the new remains, a re-evaluation of the original materials, and comparisons with other spinosaurids, the holotype of Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis is identified as an anterior dorsal, rather than a cervical vertebra, and differences between elements referred to this taxon can be explained by different positions of the elements in question within the vertebral column. Many characters used previously to diagnose the genus and species are found to be more widespread among basal tetanurans, and specifically spinosaurids. However, the taxon shows several autapomorphies that support its validity, including the presence of a strongly rugose, ventrally offset triangular platform that is confluent with a ventral keel anteriorly in the mid-cervical vertebral centra and a strongly reduced lateral neural arch lamination, with no or an incomplete distinction between anterior and posterior centrodiapophyseal laminae in the posterior cervical and anterior dorsal vertebrae. We argue furthermore that Spinosaurus maroccanus, also described on the basis of isolated cervical vertebrae from the same stratigraphic unit and in the same paper as Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis, is a subjective synonym of the latter. Both a detailed comparison of this taxon with other theropods and a formal phylogenetic analysis support spinosaurid affintities for Sigilmassasaurus. However, we reject the recently proposed synonymy of both Spinosaurus maroccanus and Sigilmassasurus brevicollis with Spinosaurus aegyptiacus from the Cenomanian of Egypt, as there are clear differences between the vertebrae of these taxa, and they do not share any derived character that is not found in other spinosaurids. Together with a comparison with other spinosaurid vertebral material from the Kem Kem, this suggests that more than one taxon of spinosaurid was present in the Kem Kem assemblage of Morocco, so the referral of non-overlapping material from this unit to a single taxon should be regarded with caution

    Relativistic and Radiative Corrections to the Mollow Spectrum

    The incoherent, inelastic part of the resonance fluorescence spectrum of a laser-driven atom is known as the Mollow spectrum [B. R. Mollow, Phys. Rev. 188, 1969 (1969)]. Starting from this level of description, we discuss theoretical foundations of high-precision spectroscopy using the resonance fluorescence light of strongly laser-driven atoms. Specifically, we evaluate the leading relativistic and radiative corrections to the Mollow spectrum, up to the relative orders of (Z alpha)^2 and alpha(Z alpha)^2, respectively, and Bloch-Siegert shifts as well as stimulated radiative corrections involving off-resonant virtual states. Complete results are provided for the hydrogen 1S-2P_{1/2} and 1S-2P_{3/2} transitions; these include all relevant correction terms up to the specified order of approximation and could directly be compared to experimental data. As an application, the outcome of such experiments would allow for a sensitive test of the validity of the dressed-state basis as the natural description of the combined atom-laser system.Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure; RevTe

    Forage Production Potential of Poa Arachnifera Torr in Semi-Arid Climates

    This study was undertaken to determine the forage potential of Texas bluegrass (Poa arachnifera Torr). Texas bluegrass is a perennial coolseason grass native to Kansas, Oklahoma, western Arkansas, and the central region of Texas, USA (Gould, 1975). Thirteen different accessions were established in 1988 at the Texas A&M University Centers at Dallas and Stephenville and tested for 2 years. Mean yields at Stephenville and Dallas were 3610 and 6022 kg ha-1. Two synthetic varieties (Syn-1 and Syn-2) were tested from 1990 to 1995 at four locations in Texas. Yields of Syn-1 was greater than Syn-2 whereas Syn- 2 provided significantly higher mortality than Syn-1 of larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith)) in nochoice laboratory feeding tests

    Full counting statistics of laser excited Rydberg aggregates in a one-dimensional geometry

    We experimentally study the full counting statistics of few-body Rydberg aggregates excited from a quasi-one-dimensional Rydberg gas. We measure asymmetric excitation spectra and increased second and third order statistical moments of the Rydberg number distribution, from which we determine the average aggregate size. Direct comparisons with numerical simulations reveal the presence of liquid-like spatial correlations, and indicate sequential growth of the aggregates around an initial grain. These findings demonstrate the importance of dissipative effects in strongly correlated Rydberg gases and introduce a way to study spatio-temporal correlations in strongly-interacting many-body quantum systems without imaging.Comment: 6 pages plus supplemen

    The LOCATA challenge data corpus for acoustic source localization and tracking

    Algorithms for acoustic source localization and tracking are essential for a wide range of applications such as personal assistants, smart homes, tele-conferencing systems, hearing aids, or autonomous systems. Numerous algorithms have been proposed for this purpose which, however, are not evaluated and compared against each other by using a common database so far. The IEEE-AASP Challenge on sound source localization and tracking (LOCATA) provides a novel, comprehensive data corpus for the objective benchmarking of state-of-the-art algorithms on sound source localization and tracking. The data corpus comprises six tasks ranging from the localization of a single static sound source with a static microphone array to the tracking of multiple moving speakers with a moving microphone array. It contains real-world multichannel audio recordings, obtained by hearing aids, microphones integrated in a robot head, a planar and a spherical microphone array in an enclosed acoustic environment as well as positional information about the involved arrays and sound sources represented by moving human talkers or static loudspeakers

    Fluctuations and scaling of inverse participation ratios in random binary resonant composites

    We study the statistics of local field distribution solved by the Green's-function formalism (GFF) [Y. Gu et al., Phys. Rev. B {\bf 59} 12847 (1999)] in the disordered binary resonant composites. For a percolating network, the inverse participation ratios (IPR) with q=2q=2 are illustrated, as well as the typical local field distributions of localized and extended states. Numerical calculations indicate that for a definite fraction pp the distribution function of IPR PqP_q has a scale invariant form. It is also shown the scaling behavior of the ensemble averaged described by the fractal dimension DqD_q. To relate the eigenvectors correlations to resonance level statistics, the axial symmetry between D2D_2 and the spectral compressibility χ\chi is obtained.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Physical Review

    A Problematic Set of Two-Loop Self-Energy Corrections

    We investigate a specific set of two-loop self-energy corrections involving squared decay rates and point out that their interpretation is highly problematic. The corrections cannot be interpreted as radiative energy shifts in the usual sense. Some of the problematic corrections find a natural interpretation as radiative nonresonant corrections to the natural line shape. They cannot uniquely be associated with one and only one atomic level. While the problematic corrections are rather tiny when expressed in units of frequency (a few Hertz for hydrogenic P levels) and do not affect the reliability of quantum electrodynamics at the current level of experimental accuracy, they may be of importance for future experiments. The problems are connected with the limitations of the so-called asymptotic-state approximation which means that atomic in- and out-states in the S-matrix are assumed to have an infinite lifetime.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures (New J.
