    Phase Transitions in Softly Broken N=2 SQCD at Non-zero Theta Angle

    We investigate the behavior of softly broken N=2N=2 SQCD at non-zero bare theta angle θ0\theta_0, using superfield spurions to implement the SUSY breaking. We find a first-order phase transition as θ0\theta_0 is varied from zero to 2π2 \pi, in agreement with a prediction of `t Hooft. The low-energy theta angle θeff\theta_{eff}, which determines the effective charges of dyonic excitations, has a complicated dependence on θ0\theta_0 and breaking parameters.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 10 epsf figure

    Exact Results And Soft Breaking Masses In Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

    We give an explicit formalism connecting softly broken supersymmetric gauge theories (with QCD as one limit) to N=2N=2 and N=1N=1 supersymmetric theories possessing exact solutions, using spurion fields to embed these models in an enlarged N=1N=1 model. The functional forms of effective Lagrangian terms resulting from soft supersymmetry breaking are constrained by the symmetries of the enlarged model, although not well enough to fully determine the vacuum structure of generic softly broken models. Nevertheless by perturbing the exact N=1N=1 model results with sufficiently small soft breaking masses, we show that there exist nonsupersymmetric models that exhibit monopole condensation and confinement in the same modes as the N=1N=1 case.Comment: Final version to appear in Nucl.     Independence of the transient fluctuation theorem to thermostatting details

    The dependence of fluctuation theorem on the precise mathematical details of thermostatting mechanism for an infinite class of fictious time reversible deterministic thermostats was analyzed. Theoretical and numerical analysis were carried out for a class of time reversible deterministic thermostats that fix various moments of the momentum distribution. In this large thermostat the transient fluctuation theorem (TFT) was found dependent of the precise moment that the thermostat fixes. The study shows that in a non-equilibrium system in contact with a thermostat and having large degrees of freedom, the transient fluctuation relation is insensitive to the details of thermostatting mechanisms

    Perspectives On The Sources And Eventual Outcome Of The 2008 Economic And Financial Crisis: A Panel Discussion

    In October 2008 the Southern Utah University School of Business held a panel discussion on the current economic crisis. This discussion was part of the School’s Business Convocation series and was open to the public. The panel was designed with two components in mind. First, a pair of academics with expertise in financial institutions and business cycles offered historical and theoretical perspectives on the crisis. Second, a pair of professionals – a local banking official and a fund manager – offered perspectives on the current financial situation and practical experience based on the policy responses to past crises. As moderator, Joe Baker asked each panelist to make a short presentation on a question of general interest that was related to their area of expertise; this was followed by an open question and answer session. The participating panelists and opening questions follow. 1. Stephen Evans, Professor of Finance: Dr. Evans teaches courses on financial institutions and was asked to provide background of how the crisis occurred and what the proposed government bailout plan is expected to accomplish. 2. David Tufte, Associate Professor of Economics: Dr. Tufte is a macroeconomist and was asked to discuss the macroeconomic implications of the crisis in such areas as inflation, interest rates, economic growth and unemployment. 3. Mr. Robb Kerry, Chief Credit Officer of ADB Bank: Mr. Kerry has an extensive background in banking as a bank regulator and banker. Mr. Kerry was asked to discuss the implications of the crisis on banking credit and lending. Mr. Steve Harrop, Finance Professional in Residence: Mr. Harrop was a mutual fund manager for several decades before joining the School of Business faculty where he teaches investments and manages (pro bono) an investment fund. Mr. Harrop will discuss the implications of the crisis on the stock and bond markets

    Decorin protein core affects the global gene expression profile of the tumor microenvironment in a triple-negative orthotopic breast carcinoma xenograft model

    Decorin, a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan gene family, exists and functions wholly within the tumor microenvironment to suppress tumorigenesis by directly targeting and antagonizing multiple receptor tyrosine kinases, such as the EGFR and Met. This leads to potent and sustained signal attenuation, growth arrest, and angiostasis. We thus sought to evaluate the tumoricidal benefits of systemic decorin on a triple-negative orthotopic breast carcinoma xenograft model. To this end, we employed a novel high-density mixed expression array capable of differentiating and simultaneously measuring gene signatures of both Mus musculus (stromal) and Homo sapiens (epithelial) tissue origins. We found that decorin protein core modulated the differential expression of 374 genes within the stromal compartment of the tumor xenograft. Further, our top gene ontology classes strongly suggests an unexpected and preferential role for decorin protein core to inhibit genes necessary for immunomodulatory responses while simultaneously inducing expression of those possessing cellular adhesion and tumor suppressive gene properties. Rigorous verification of the top scoring candidates led to the discovery of three genes heretofore unlinked to malignant breast cancer that were reproducibly found to be induced in several models of tumor stroma. Collectively, our data provide highly novel and unexpected stromal gene signatures as a direct function of systemic administration of decorin protein core and reveals a fundamental basis of action for decorin to modulate the tumor stroma as a biological mechanism for the ascribed anti-tumorigenic properties

    Origin, maintenance and spread of antibiotic resistance genes within plasmids and chromosomes of bloodstream isolates of Escherichia coli

    The work was funded by the Scottish Executive via the Chief Scientists Office through the provision of a grant to establish the Scottish Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention Institute (SHAIPI).Blood stream invasion by Escherichia coli is the commonest cause of bacteremia in the UK and elsewhere with an attributable mortality of about 15–20 %; antibiotic resistance to multiple agents is common in this microbe and is associated with worse outcomes. Genes conferring antimicrobial resistance, and their frequent location on horizontally transferred genetic elements is well-recognised, but the origin of these determinants, and their ability to be maintained and spread within clinically-relevant bacterial populations is unclear. Here, we set out to examine the distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes in chromosomes and plasmids of 16 bloodstream isolates of E. coli from patients within Scotland, and how these genes are maintained and spread. Using a combination of short and long-read whole genome sequencing methods, we were able to assemble complete sequences of 44 plasmids, with 16 Inc group F and 20 col plasmids; antibiotic resistance genes located almost exclusively within the F group. blaCTX-M15 genes had re-arranged in some strains into the chromosome alone (five strains), while others contained plasmid copies alone (two strains). Integrons containing multiple antibiotic genes were widespread in plasmids, notably many with a dfrA7 gene encoding resistance to trimethoprim, thus linking trimethoprim resistance to the other antibiotic resistance genes within the plasmids. This will allow even narrow spectrum antibiotics such as trimethoprim to act as a selective agent for plasmids containing antibiotic resistance genes mediating much broader resistance, including blaCTX-M15. To our knowledge, this is the first analysis to provide complete sequence data of chromosomes and plasmids in a collection of pathogenic human bloodstream isolates of E. coli. Our findings reveal the interplay between plasmids and integrative and conjugative elements in the maintenance and spread of antibiotic resistance genes within pathogenic E. coli.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Comparison of first pass bolus AIFs extracted from sequential 18F-FDG PET and DSC-MRI of mice.

    Accurate kinetic modelling of in vivo physiological function using positron emission tomography (PET) requires determination of the tracer time-activity curve in plasma, known as the arterial input function (AIF). The AIF is usually determined by invasive blood sampling methods, which are prohibitive in murine studies due to low total blood volumes. Extracting AIFs from PET images is also challenging due to large partial volume effects (PVE). We hypothesise that in combined PET with magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MR), a co-injected bolus of MR contrast agent and PET ligand can be tracked using fast MR acquisitions. This protocol would allow extraction of a MR AIF from MR contrast agent concentration-time curves, at higher spatial and temporal resolution than an image-derived PET AIF. A conversion factor could then be applied to the MR AIF for use in PET kinetic analysis. This work has compared AIFs obtained from sequential DSC-MRI and PET with separate injections of gadolinium contrast agent and 18F-FDG respectively to ascertain the technique's validity. An automated voxel selection algorithm was employed to improve MR AIF reproducibility. We found that MR and PET AIFs displayed similar character in the first pass, confirmed by gamma variate fits (p<0.02). MR AIFs displayed reduced PVE compared to PET AIFs, indicating their potential use in PET/MR studies.This work was funded by an MRC studentship and travel to PSMR 2013 was funded by the EU COST action for PET/MR.This is the author accepted manuscript.
