    Metagenomes in the Borderline Ecosystems of the Antarctic Cryptoendolithic Communities.

    Antarctic cryptoendolithic communities are microbial ecosystems dwelling inside rocks of the Antarctic desert. We present the first 18 shotgun metagenomes from these communities to further characterize their composition, biodiversity, functionality, and adaptation. Future studies will integrate taxonomic and functional annotations to examine the pathways necessary for life to evolve in the extremes

    DOOp, an automated wrapper for DAOSPEC

    Large spectroscopic surveys such as the Gaia-ESO Survey produce huge quantities of data. Automatic tools are necessary to efficiently handle this material. The measurement of equivalent widths in stellar spectra is traditionally done by hand or with semi-automatic procedures that are time-consuming and not very robust with respect to the repeatability of the results. The program DAOSPEC is a tool that provides consistent measurements of equivalent widths in stellar spectra while requiring a minimum of user intervention. However, it is not optimised to deal with large batches of spectra, as some parameters still need to be modified and checked by the user. Exploiting the versatility and portability of BASH, we have built a pipeline called DAOSPEC Option Optimiser (DOOp) automating the procedure of equivalent widths measurement with DAOSPEC. DOOp is organised in different modules that run one after the other to perform specific tasks, taking care of the optimisation of the parameters needed to provide the final equivalent widths, and providing log files to ensure better control over the procedure. In this paper, making use of synthetic and observed spectra, we compare the performance of DOOp with other methods, including DAOSPEC used manually. The measurements made by DOOp are identical to the ones produced by DAOSPEC when used manually, while requiring less user intervention, which is convenient when dealing with a large quantity of spectra. DOOp shows its best performance on high-resolution spectra (R>20 000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N>30), with uncertainties ranging from 6 m{\AA} to 2 m{\AA}. The only subjective parameter that remains is the normalisation, as the user still has to make a choice on the order of the polynomial used for the continuum fitting. As a test, we use the equivalent widths measured by DOOp to re-derive the stellar parameters of four well-studied stars

    Este trabalho buscou analisar o cenário do setor farmacêutico nos últimos anos e avaliar os desafios da Politica de Desenvolvimento Produtivo implementada em 2008 dentro deste setor e compreender o papel de cada envolvido neste cenário. O exercício de analisar os impactos de uma política pública nacional no desempenho do Complexo Industrial da Saúde tem como objetivo identificar se as parcerias de desenvolvimento produtivo proporcionaram realmente condições favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da indústria farmacêutica brasileira nos últimos anos. O Modelo de Estrutura-Conduta-Desempenho é utilizado como ferramenta para tal análise, onde resultados do setor em relação a barreiras a entrada de novas firmas, políticas de preço, entre outros são apresentados. É evidente que apesar dos esforços dos envolvidos na Política de Desenvolvimento Produtivo, governo, laboratórios públicos e privados ainda existem gargalos regulatório e tributário o que dificulta o desenvolvimento das parcerias e o que explica o baixo rendimento das mesmas, até 2006 somente 6 medicamentos estavam sendo produzidos. Para que os instrumentos governamentais sejam mais ágeis é necessário que este coordene suas ferramentas e que tenha o setor privado como aliados, umas que ambos não funcionam isoladamente

    FAMA: An automatic code for stellar parameter and abundance determination

    The large amount of spectra obtained during the epoch of extensive spectroscopic surveys of Galactic stars needs the development of automatic procedures to derive their atmospheric parameters and individual element abundances. Starting from the widely-used code MOOG by C. Sneden, we have developed a new procedure to determine atmospheric parameters and abundances in a fully automatic way. The code FAMA (Fast Automatic MOOG Analysis) is presented describing its approach to derive atmospheric stellar parameters and element abundances. The code, freely distributed, is written in Perl and can be used on different platforms. The aim of FAMA is to render the computation of the atmospheric parameters and abundances of a large number of stars using measurements of equivalent widths as automatic and as independent of any subjective approach as possible. It is based on the simultaneous search for three equilibria: excitation equilibrium, ionization balance, and the relationship between \fei\ and the reduced equivalent widths. FAMA also evaluates the statistical errors on individual element abundances and errors due to the uncertainties in the stellar parameters. The convergence criteria are not fixed 'a priori' but are based on the quality of the spectra. In this paper we present tests performed on the Solar spectrum EWs which tests the dependency on the initial parameters, and the analysis of a sample of stars observed in Galactic open and globular clusters.Comment: A&A accepted, 12 pages, 6 figures, 3 table

    MiRNAs as Potential Prognostic Biomarkers for Metastasis in Thin and Thick Primary Cutaneous Melanomas.

    Background/Aim: The identification of novel prognostic biomarkers for melanoma metastasis is essential to improve patient outcomes. To this aim, we characterized miRNA expression profiles in relation to metastasis in melanoma and correlated miRNAs expression with clinicalpathological factors. Materials and Methods: MiR-145-5p, miR-150-5p, miR-182-5p, miR-203-3p, miR-205-5p and miR211-5p expression levels were analyzed in primary cutaneous melanomas, including thin and thick melanomas, and in melanoma metastases by quantitative Real-Time PCR. Results: A significantly lower miR-205-5p expression was found in metastases compared to primary melanomas. Furthermore, a progressive down-regulation of miR-205-5p expression was observed from loco-regional to distant metastasis. Significantly lower miR-145-5p and miR-203-3p expression levels were found in cases with Breslow thickness >1 mm, high Clark level, ulceration and mitotic rate ≥1/mm2. Conclusion: Our findings point to miR-205-5p as potential biomarker of distant metastases and to miR-145-5p and miR-203-3p as markers of aggressiveness in melanoma

    Geology and elevation shape bacterial assembly in Antarctic endolithic communities

    Ice free areas of continental Antarctica are among the coldest and driest environments on Earth, and yet, they support surprisingly diverse and highly adapted microbial communities. Endolithic growth is one of the key adaptations to such extreme environments and often represents the dominant life-form. Despite growing scientific interest, little is known of the mechanisms that influence the assembly of endolithic microbiomes across these harsh environments. Here, we used metagenomics to examine the diversity and assembly of endolithic bacterial communities across Antarctica within different rock types and over a large elevation range. While granite supported richer and more heterogeneous communities than sandstone, elevation had no apparent effect on taxonomic richness, regardless of rock type. Conversely, elevation was clearly associated with turnover in community composition, with the deterministic process of variable selection driving microbial assembly along the elevation gradient. The turnover associated with elevation was modulated by geology, whereby for a given elevation difference, turnover was consistently larger between communities inhabiting different rock types. Overall, selection imposed by elevation and geology appeared stronger than turnover related to other spatially-structured environmental drivers. Our findings indicate that at the cold-arid limit of life on Earth, geology and elevation are key determinants of endolithic bacterial heterogeneity. This also suggests that warming temperatures may threaten the persistence of such extreme-adapted organism

    Metastases risk in thin cutaneous melanoma: Prognostic value of clinical-pathologic characteristics and mutation profile

    Background: A high percentage of patients with thin melanoma (TM), defined as lesions with Breslow thickness ≤1 mm, presents excellent long-term survival, however, some patients develop metastases. Existing prognostic factors cannot reliably differentiate TM patients at risk for metastases. Objective: We aimed at characterizing the clinical-pathologic and mutation profile of metastatic and not-metastatic TM in order to distinguish lesions at risk of metastases. Methods: Clinical-pathologic characteristics were recorded for the TM cases analyzed. We used a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) multi-gene panel to characterize TM for multiple somatic mutations. Results: A statistically significant association emerged between the presence of metastases and Breslow thickness ≥0.6 mm (p=0.003). None of TM with lymph-node involvement had Breslow thickness < 0.6 mm. Somatic mutations were identified in 19 of 21 TM analyzed (90.5%). No mutations were observed in two not-metastatic cases with the lowest Breslow thickness (≤0.4 mm), whereas mutations in more than one gene were detected in one metastatic case with the highest Breslow thickness (1.00 mm). Conclusion: Our study indicates Breslow thickness ≥0.6 mm as a valid prognostic factor to distinguish TM at risk for metastases

The first illustrates two design assumptions for a washland along the Arno floodplain, aimed at demonstrating that a structure designed to protect the territory from flood damage can also provide an opportunity for the regeneration of the territory, the landscape and the environment. The objective of the second essay is the drafting of rules to be included in the bylaws of the planning instrument at municipal level. It takes its cue from the guidelines of Tuscan Regional Law 1/2005 for the drafting of the Structural Plans. The key issue of this thesis is the valorisation of the water resources. The third contribution addresses a study of the infrastructure system of the Empoli plain, and its redevelopment and conversion into a functional and efficient network to enhance the accessibility and utilisation of the Arno River Park. By attributing centrality to the river, the study contributes to the regeneration of the entire fluvial system

    The purpose of this paper is to present the spectral response at different energies of some CZT crystals grown with the boron oxide encapsulated vertical Bridgman method by IMEM-CNR.
