    No full text
International audienceSeveral real-life applications can be stated in terms of the Quadratic Assignment Problem. Finding an optimal assignment is com-putationally very difficult, for many useful instances. We address this problem using a local search technique, based on Extremal Optimization and present experimental evidence that this approach is competitive. Moreover, cooperative parallel versions of our solver improve performance so much that large and hard instances can be solved quickly

International audienceConstraint satisfaction and combinatorial optimization problems , even when modeled with efficient metaheurisics such as local search remain computationally very intensive. Solvers stand to benefit significantly from execution on parallel systems, which are increasingly available. The architectural diversity and complexity of the latter means that these systems pose ever greater challenges in order to be effectively used, both from the point of view of the modeling effort and from that of the degree of coverage of the available computing resources. In this article we discuss impositions and design issues for a framework to make efficient use of various parallel architectures

International audienceThe Quadratic Assignment Problem is at the core of several real-life applications. Finding an optimal assignment is computationally very difficult, for many useful instances. The best results are obtained with hybrid heuristics, which result in complex solvers. We propose an alternate solution where hybridization is obtain by means of parallelism and cooperation between simple single-heuristic solvers. We present experimental evidence that this approach is very efficient and can effectively solve a wide variety of hard problems, often surpassing state-of-the-art systems

Constraint Programming as a Means to Manage Configurations in Self-Adaptive Systems

    No full text
International audienceIn recent years, new software architectures have been developed in which components can be bound and unbound dynamically as the context demands. This capacity to dynamically adapt the software's structure, behaviour and quality of service should make resilience easier to achieve by allowing systems to respond more flexibly to changing environmental contexts. However, because the decision of how to react to a new context is devolved to a run-time decision-making element that senses the context and selects an appropriate component configuration, a new approach to how software is specified is needed. A self-adaptive system that uses architectural adaptation may be conceptualized as a dynamic SPL. In this paper we argue that the problem of specifying a DSPL can be reduced to a constraint satisfaction problem. We combine goal modeling techniques with constraint programming to provide the analyst with a means to identify the system variants best suited to the various environmental contexts that a system might encounter at runtime. We illustrate our approach using the example of a self-adaptive wireless sensor network

    Get PDF
In computer science, an expected outcome of a student's education is programming skill. This working group investigated the programming competency students have as they complete their first one or two courses in computer science. In order to explore options for assessing students, the working group developed a trial assessment of whether students can program. The underlying goal of this work was to initiate dialog in the Computer Science community on how to develop these types of assessments. Several universities participated in our trial assessment and the disappointing results suggest that many students do not know how to program at the conclusion of their introductory courses. For a combined sample of 216 students from four universities, the average score was 22.89 out of 110 points on the general evaluation criteria developed for this study. From this trial assessment we developed a framework of expectations for first-year courses and suggestions for further work to develop more comprehensive assessments

Larval Competition between Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in Argentina: Coexistence and Implications in the Distribution of the Asian Tiger Mosquito

    Get PDF
Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) are worldwide vectors of dengue and yellow fever viruses. These species coexist in many countries and the biotic interactions between them can influence their abundances and distributions. In Argentina, Ae. aegypti is widely distributed in the north and center regions of the country, with temperate and subtropical climate, while both are sympatric only in the northeastern area of the subtropical region. Interspecific and intraspecific larval competition for food was evaluated to assess if their interaction influences on patterns of abundance and distribution. Finite rates of increase and survivorship for each species were estimated and the effects of mosquito density ratio and detritus availability were determined. The Lambda (λ) index of population performance of both showed there is no competitive exclusion pattern. However, survival of Ae. albopictus was negatively affected by the presence of Ae. aegypti. These results suggest one possible explanation for the codominance pattern of both species display in rural regions of the southernmost distribution of Ae. albopictus in South America. They also show Ae. aegypti as a potential biotic barrier for the expansion of Ae. albopictus as was reported in regions of the United States.Fil: Lizuain, Arturo Andrés.
