Ultraspinning instability: the missing link
We study linearized perturbations of Myers-Perry black holes in d=7, with two
of the three angular momenta set to be equal, and show that instabilities
always appear before extremality. Analogous results are expected for all higher
odd d. We determine numerically the stationary perturbations that mark the
onset of instability for the modes that preserve the isometries of the
background. The onset is continuously connected between the previously studied
sectors of solutions with a single angular momentum and solutions with all
angular momenta equal. This shows that the near-extremality instabilities are
of the same nature as the ultraspinning instability of d>5 singly-spinning
solutions, for which the angular momentum is unbounded. Our results raise the
question of whether there are any extremal Myers-Perry black holes which are

Natural parasitism of the Citrus Leafminer (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) over eight years in seven citrus regions of São Paulo, Brazil
The citrus leafminer (CLM) Phyllocnists citrella Stainton (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) was frst recorded in Brazil in 1996. In 1998, the parasitoid
Ageniaspis citricola Logvinovskaya (Hymenoptera: Encyrtdae) was introduced and established in many regions of the country. In this study, 130 onehour-samplings of sweet orange leaves (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osbeck) hostng CLM pupal chambers were carried out to estmate the CLM parasitsm rate
(%) by its parasitoids in 7 regions of São Paulo State between 2000 and 2008. The sample sizes varied from 10 to 275 leaves (mean = 65). The most
abundant parasitoid was the encyrtd A. citricola (found in 91.8% of the samplings). The highest level of CLM parasitsm by A. citricola was recorded
in the southern region (Botucatu), 70.2 ± 6.6 (mean ± SEM), and the lowest level was recorded in the northern region (Barretos), 12.8 ± 5.7%. CLM
parasitsm by A. citricola and by natve parasitoids (Galeopsomyia fausta LaSalle, Cirrospilus spp. and Elasmus sp.) did not differ between seasons.
The 6-fold increase in the use of insectcides in citrus groves, afer 2004 when the Huanglongbing (HLB) disease was found in São Paulo State, did
not reduce the level of CLM parasitsm. The level of parasitsm was 50.8 ± 4.2% before the advent of HLB (2000–2004) and 56.0 ± 4.4% thereafer

Ultraspinning instability of anti-de Sitter black holes
Myers-Perry black holes with a single spin in d>5 have been shown to be
unstable if rotating sufficiently rapidly. We extend the numerical analysis
which allowed for that result to the asymptotically AdS case. We determine
numerically the stationary perturbations that mark the onset of the
instabilities for the modes that preserve the rotational symmetries of the
background. The parameter space of solutions is thoroughly analysed, and the
onset of the instabilities is obtained as a function of the cosmological
constant. Each of these perturbations has been conjectured to represent a
bifurcation point to a new phase of stationary AdS black holes, and this is

An instability of higher-dimensional rotating black holes
We present the first example of a linearized gravitational instability of an
asymptotically flat vacuum black hole. We study perturbations of a Myers-Perry
black hole with equal angular momenta in an odd number of dimensions. We find
no evidence of any instability in five or seven dimensions, but in nine
dimensions, for sufficiently rapid rotation, we find perturbations that grow
exponentially in time. The onset of instability is associated with the
appearance of time-independent perturbations which generically break all but
one of the rotational symmetries. This is interpreted as evidence for the
existence of a new 70-parameter family of black hole solutions with only a
single rotational symmetry. We also present results for the Gregory-Laflamme
instability of rotating black strings, demonstrating that rotation makes black

Thermodynamic instability of doubly spinning black objects
We investigate the thermodynamic stability of neutral black objects with (at
least) two angular momenta. We use the quasilocal formalism to compute the
grand canonical potential and show that the doubly spinning black ring is
thermodynamically unstable. We consider the thermodynamic instabilities of
ultra-spinning black objects and point out a subtle relation between the
microcanonical and grand canonical ensembles. We also find the location of the

New Horizons for Black Holes and Branes
We initiate a systematic scan of the landscape of black holes in any
spacetime dimension using the recently proposed blackfold effective worldvolume
theory. We focus primarily on asymptotically flat stationary vacuum solutions,
where we uncover large classes of new black holes. These include helical black
strings and black rings, black odd-spheres, for which the horizon is a product
of a large and a small sphere, and non-uniform black cylinders. More exotic
possibilities are also outlined. The blackfold description recovers correctly
the ultraspinning Myers-Perry black holes as ellipsoidal even-ball
configurations where the velocity field approaches the speed of light at the
boundary of the ball. Helical black ring solutions provide the first instance
of asymptotically flat black holes in more than four dimensions with a single
spatial U(1) isometry. They also imply infinite rational non-uniqueness in
ultraspinning regimes, where they maximize the entropy among all stationary
single-horizon solutions. Moreover, static blackfolds are possible with the
geometry of minimal surfaces. The absence of compact embedded minimal surfaces
in Euclidean space is consistent with the uniqueness theorem of static black

Black ringoids: spinning balanced black objects in d >= 5 dimensions - the codimension-two case
We propose a general framework for the study of asymptotically flat black objects with k+1 equal magnitude angular momenta in d >= 5 spacetime dimensions (with 0 0 are dubbed black ringoids. Based on the nonperturbative numerical results found for several values of (n, k), we propose a general picture for the properties and the phase diagram of these solutions and the associated black holes with spherical horizon topology: n = 1 black ringoids repeat the k = 0 pattern of black rings and Myers-Perry black holes in 5 dimensions, whereas n > 1 black ringoids follow the pattern of higher dimensional black rings associated with 'pinched' black holes and Myers-Perry black holes

The major barriers to evidence-informed conservation policy and possible solutions
Conservation policy decisions can suffer from a lack of evidence, hindering effective decision-making. In nature conservation, studies investigating why policy is often not evidence-informed have tended to focus on Western democracies, with relatively small samples. To understand global variation and challenges better, we established a global survey aimed at identifying top barriers and solutions to the use of conservation science in policy. This obtained the views of 758 people in policy, practice, and research positions from 68 countries across six languages. Here we show that, contrary to popular belief, there is agreement between groups about how to incorporate conservation science into policy, and there is thus room for optimism. Barriers related to the low priority of conservation were considered to be important, while mainstreaming conservation was proposed as a key solution. Therefore, priorities should focus on convincing the public of the importance of conservation as an issue, which will then influence policy-makers to adopt pro-environmental long-term policies.NERC (1653183)

Optimal functional outcome measures for assessing treatment for Dupuytren's disease: A systematic review and recommendations for future practice

Copyright © 2013 Ball et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.Background: Dupuytren's disease of the hand is a common condition affecting the palmar fascia, resulting in progressive flexion deformities of the digits and hence limitation of hand function. The optimal treatment remains unclear as outcomes studies have used a variety of measures for assessment. Methods: A literature search was performed for all publications describing surgical treatment, percutaneous needle aponeurotomy or collagenase injection for primary or recurrent Dupuytren’s disease where outcomes had been monitored using functional measures. Results: Ninety-one studies met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-two studies reported outcomes using patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) ranging from validated questionnaires to self-reported measures for return to work and self-rated disability. The Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score was the most utilised patient-reported function measure (n=11). Patient satisfaction was reported by eighteen studies but no single method was used consistently. Range of movement was the most frequent physical measure and was reported in all 91 studies. However, the methods of measurement and reporting varied, with seventeen different techniques being used. Other physical measures included grip and pinch strength and sensibility, again with variations in measurement protocols. The mean follow-up time ranged from 2 weeks to 17 years. Conclusions: There is little consistency in the reporting of outcomes for interventions in patients with Dupuytren’s disease, making it impossible to compare the efficacy of different treatment modalities. Although there are limitations to the existing generic patient reported outcomes measures, a combination of these together with a disease-specific questionnaire, and physical measures of active and passive individual joint Range of movement (ROM), grip and sensibility using standardised protocols should be used for future outcomes studies. As Dupuytren’s disease tends to recur following treatment as well as extend to involve other areas of the hand, follow-up times should be standardised and designed to capture both short and long term outcomes
