    Apoptose

SUMMARYApoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a general and physiologic mechanism of cell death, with distinct morphological characteristics, whose basic mechanisms may be conserved in evolution since invertebrates. Since its description in tumours, over 20 years ago, a large number of investigations have implied apoptosis in several aspects of immunology, of the inflammatory response and in the control of viral replication and tumour growth. It is now well established that the products of several tumour supressor genes and oncogenes regulate a poptosis, and that the success of several anti-cancer treatments depend on apoptosis induction in tumour cells. The author addresses the basic morphological and biochemical characteristics of apoptosis and its impact in the understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of lung inflammatory, infectious and tumoural pathology

Effect of cytostatic drugs on microbial behaviour in membrane bioreactor system

The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of cyclophosphamide and its principal metabolites (CPs) on microbial behaviour in a membrane bioreactor system. Two laboratory-scale membrane bioreactors (MBR) were run in parallel with a sludge retention time of 70 days (one with the cytostatic drugs, MBR-CPs, the second without, MBR-control). The microbial activity was measured by respirometric analysis. The endogenous and exogenous respirations of heterotrophic micro-organisms were evaluated. Micro-organisms exposed to CPs showed higher endogenous respiration rates and lower exogenous respiration rates than micro-organisms present in MBR-control. The effects were observed several days after adding the cocktail. Reduced sludge production was observed in MBR-CPs compared to MBR-control. This reduction of sludge production and the increase in the endogenous respiration rate in relation to MBR-control suggest that the chemical stress caused by CPs led to a diversion of carbon and/or energy from growth to adaptive responses and protection. In addition, the inhibitory effect on the assimilation of exogenous substrate (reduced exogenous respiration rate) suggests an inhibition of catabolism and anabolism despite the low CPs concentration studied (μg/L). However, this inhibitory effect can be offset by the biomass still active under low ratio (substrate/biomass) conditions in the bioreactor (due to complete retention of biomass and high sludge age), which helped to maintain high overall performance in the removal of conventional pollution

Evaluación del rendimiento del servicio de videostreaming adaptativo en redes inalámbricas

YouTube Live is one of the most popular services on the Internet, enabling an easy streaming of a live video with acceptable video quality. Thus, understanding user´s perception of this service is of the utmost importance for network operators. The image Quality delivered and user videoplayback behavior on YouTube Live streaming are important keys to ensure an adequate Quality of Experience (QoE). In this paper, an analytical model, and stacked Bar Graph to estimate the QoE for encrypted YouTube Live service from packet-level data collected in the interfaces of a wireless network is presented. The inputs to the model are Transport Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) metrics, from which two Service Key Performance Indicators (S-KPIs) are estimated, namely video quality level (itag) and, videoplayback connection ratio. The model is developed with an experimental platform, consisting of a user terminal agent, a WiFi wireless network, a network-level emulator, a Mitmproxy and a probe software. Model assessment is carried out by comparing S-KPI estimates with measurements from the terminal agent under different network conditions introduced by the network emulator.Universidad de Málaga. Employment Impacts of EU Biofuels Policy: Combining Bottom-up Technology Information and Sectoral Market Simulations in an Input-output Framework

    Get PDF
This paper analyses the employment consequences of policies aimed to support biofuels in the European Union. The promotion of biofuel use has been advocated as a means to promote the sustainable use of natural resources and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions originating from transport activities on the one hand, and to reduce dependence on imported oil and thereby increase security of the European energy supply on the other hand. The employment impacts of increasing biofuels shares are calculated by taking into account a set of elements comprising the demand for capital goods required to produce biofuels, the additional demand for agricultural feedstock, higher fuel prices or reduced household budget in the case of price subsidisation, price effects ensuing from a hypothetical world oil price reduction linked to substitution in the EU market, and price impacts on agro-food commodities. The calculations refer to scenarios for the year 2020 targets as set out by the recent Renewable Energy Roadmap. Employment effects are assessed in an input-output framework taking into account bottom-up technology information to specify biofuels activities and linked to partial equilibrium models for the agricultural and energy sectors. The simulations suggest that biofuels targets on the order of 10-15% could be achieved without adverse net employment effects. Biofuels,Input-output,Employment

A 4-mode reconfigurable low noise amplifier for implantable neural recording channels

    Get PDF
In this paper a reconfigurable implantable low noise amplifier for the recording of neural signals is presented. It is comprised by low-power and noise efficient current reuse OTAs in its direct path. The proposed architecture allows for an active feedback to set the high-pass corner in place of the commonly used pseudoresistor. Bandwidth selectivity is achieved by circuit reconfigurability which changes the pole frequencies of the system without impacting the total power consumption. Simulation results in AMS 0.18μm technology validate the proposed architecture in both nominal and corner process conditions with an estimated total power consumption of 454nW.Office of Naval Research (USA) N00014-14-1-0355Junta de Andalucía TIC 233

In this paper an analog front-end for the multi-channel implantable recording of neural signals is presented. It is comprised by a two-stage AC-coupled low-noise amplifier (LNA) and a one stage AC-coupled variable gain amplifier (VGA). The proposed architecture employs highly power-noise efficient current reuse fully differential OTAs in the LNA stage and a fully differential folded cascode for the VGA stage. Simulation results in AMS 0.18μm validate the proposed architecture under process corners variations with an estimated power consumption of 2.2μm and 3.1 μVrms in-band noise.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016- 80923-POffice of Naval Research (USA) N00014111031
