Human and nonhuman rights

This paper tries to rethink the notion of human rights and to evaluate whether we should redefine them in light of the main challenges presented by advances in technoscience (genetic engineering, robotics, nanotechnology etc.). It claims that there are basic, intrinsic rights to personhood, which, on the one hand, allow us to justify a moral claim to a posthuman existence (should it become possible) and to attribute rights to artificial agents, while, on the other hand, granting the moral entitlement to remain human. This shows that the notion of human rights is far from becoming obsolete, as claimed by some scholars. The paper is divided into five parts. It (1) presents reasons for rethinking the notion of “a right” in order to apply it to beings other than humans (e.g., nonhuman animals, robots etc.); (2) discusses the metaethical problem concerning the meaning of “a right”; (3) presents a basic system of rights that are intrinsic to personhood and that can be attributed to different kinds of agents (human or not); (4) analyzes whether there is a right to a posthuman existence or a right to remain human; and finally, (5) presents some reasons to justify such a system of rights

Was Kant a naturalist? Further reflections on Rauscher's idealist meta-ethics

Neste artigo, examino a leitura de Rauscher segundo a qual Kant é um naturalista metafísico e um anti-naturalista metodológico. Além disso, discuto as implicações meta-éticas de uma interpretação que vê em Kant tipo qualquer de naturalista. Sustento que Kant não pode ser considerado um naturalista em sentido metafísico, embora, em certo sentido, ele seja um não-naturalista metodológico. Depois, exponho que a leitura naturalista que Rauscher faz de Kant pode ser um dos motivos dele para considerar a meta-ética de Kant como sendo idealista. Argumento contra Rauscher e sua interpretação de Kant como naturalista metafísico, esperando que possa mostrar também que ele não é um idealista puro-sangue, em termos meta-éticos.

NEUROBIOÉTICA E NEUROTECNOLOGIAS

O artigo discute alguns desafios éticos que surgem a partir da aplicação da neurociência no desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias. Foca-se, em especial, na produção de fármacos e seus possíveis impactos para tratamento ou melhoramento cognitivo. Finalmente, dado que uma das possíveis implicações do (abu)uso de melhoradores cognitivos por pessoas saudáveis é o desenvolvimento de desordens mentais e adicção, o trabalho aborda também algumas questões éticas no domínio da psiquiatria, em especial, os perigos da sobremedicalização.

Moral knowledge: epistemic foundations of neurobioethics

O presente artigo discute as possíveis contribuições da neurociência para estabelecer os fundamentos epistêmicos da neuroética. Iniciando com uma associação entre tipos de memória e tipos de conhecimento, o trabalho analisa o saber moral em termos não-proposicionais e desenvolve uma nova epistemologia moral, a saber, o cognitivismo prático. Tal teoria metaética é, então, usada para estabelecer os fundamentos normativos da bioética e da neuroética fundindo-as em um novo campo, a neurobioética.Palavras-chave: metaética, epistemologia moral, cognitivismo, neurobioética. This paper discusses the contributions neuroscience can make to establish the epistemic foundations of neuroethics. Starting with the association of different kinds of memory with kinds of knowledge, it analyses moral knowing-how in non-propositional terms and develops a new moral epistemology, namely practical cognitivism. Such approach is then used to establish the normative bases of both bioethics and neuroethics contributing to a new emerging field: neurobioethics.Keywords: meta-ethics, moral epistemology, cognitivism, neurobioethics

Uses of 'Good':some family ressamblances

This paper applies the concept of family resemblances to clarify the multiplicity of uses of the word ‘good,’ both absolute and relative ones. Making a distinction between different moral language-games (normative, evaluative etc), this work holds that there is a focal meaning of ‘good’ which allows us to deny that Wittgenstein became a relativist. Thus, ‘good’ refers to what has intrinsic worth and qualifies an act as moral or immoral, that is, whether it must or not be performed

This paper deals with the question whether science and philosophy are continuous, as Quine thought, or whether they are completely separated, as Wittgenstein held. Reconstructing the reasons why the latter kept a sharp distinction between science and philosophy, it examines the attempts of the former to resolve philosophical problems in scientific terms.
