Efficient transfer entropy analysis of non-stationary neural time series

Information theory allows us to investigate information processing in neural systems in terms of information transfer, storage and modification. Especially the measure of information transfer, transfer entropy, has seen a dramatic surge of interest in neuroscience. Estimating transfer entropy from two processes requires the observation of multiple realizations of these processes to estimate associated probability density functions. To obtain these observations, available estimators assume stationarity of processes to allow pooling of observations over time. This assumption however, is a major obstacle to the application of these estimators in neuroscience as observed processes are often non-stationary. As a solution, Gomez-Herrero and colleagues theoretically showed that the stationarity assumption may be avoided by estimating transfer entropy from an ensemble of realizations. Such an ensemble is often readily available in neuroscience experiments in the form of experimental trials. Thus, in this work we combine the ensemble method with a recently proposed transfer entropy estimator to make transfer entropy estimation applicable to non-stationary time series. We present an efficient implementation of the approach that deals with the increased computational demand of the ensemble method's practical application. In particular, we use a massively parallel implementation for a graphics processing unit to handle the computationally most heavy aspects of the ensemble method. We test the performance and robustness of our implementation on data from simulated stochastic processes and demonstrate the method's applicability to magnetoencephalographic data. While we mainly evaluate the proposed method for neuroscientific data, we expect it to be applicable in a variety of fields that are concerned with the analysis of information transfer in complex biological, social, and artificial systems.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures, submitted to PLOS ON

Dissecting Glasgow: Alasdair Gray's Poor Things

Poor Things is, to a large extent, concerned with the representation of the city of Glasgow during its year as European City of Culture. The novel not only shows that there is more to the Victorian era than is evoked by the conservative propaganda of those years, but also suggests that there is more to Glaswegian culture than that which was marketed during 1990. In this paper I will analyse the three main narratives that converge in Poor Things, each written from a distinct perspective and at different points in history, and the links they create between Victorian Glasgow and contemporary Glasgow. We will study how Gray uses multiple narrative perspectives and historical frames of reference to recontextualise contemporary political and ideological concerns within historical discourses, re-historicising the debate about contemporary Glasgow and making historiographic reconstruction a central feature of the whole novel. The paper will also explore how the author uses the history and the landscape of Glasgow to chart a new anatomy of the city, fashioning these images and ideals into a new mythography of Glasgow, against which the contemporary city can be measured

Desarrollo de un sistema empotrado para el control de sistemas electrónicos a través de Internet

En este Trabajo Fin de Grado se ha desarrollado un sistema electrónico basado en un sistema empotrado para ser manejado a través de internet. Este proyecto forma parte de la iniciativa de crear mostradores interactivos para ser inicialmente expuestos en la Escuela Politécnica Superior dentro de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Durante el proceso de desarrollo se estudiarán a fondo diferentes tecnologías actuales con el objetivo de construir la plataforma necesaria encargada de conectar al usuario con los equipos a mostrar. Para ello se usará un sistema embebido que podrá ser controlado a través de internet. Una vez conectado a una página web, se mostrará el equipo y las funciones que puede realizar, permitiendo al usuario interaccionar en directo con las entradas y salidas de la plataforma. El resultado de este proyecto será una plataforma totalmente accesible, que será la base para la conexión entre el usuario y el dispositivo a manejar. Se incluirá toda la documentación necesaria para poder acceder a los recursos.In this Final Project it has developed a system based on an electronic control system to be managed through the Internet. This project is part of the initiative to create interactive desks to be initially exhibited at the Escuela Politécnica Superior within the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. During the development process we studied a different technologies background with the aim of building the necessary platform. To do this, use an embedded system that can be controlled through the Internet. Once connected to a web page, show the equipment and the functions they can perform, allowing the user to interact live with the inputs and outputs of the platform. The result of this project will be a fully accessible platform, which will be the basis for the connection between the user and the device to be handled. All the documentation necessary to access the resources will be included

Self-adaptive strategy based on fuzzy control systems for improving performance in wireless sensors networks

The solutions to cope with new challenges that societies have to face nowadays involve providing smarter daily systems. To achieve this, technology has to evolve and leverage physical systems automatic interactions, with less human intervention. Technological paradigms like Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are providing reference models, architectures, approaches and tools that are to support cross-domain solutions. Thus, CPS based solutions will be applied in different application domains like e-Health, Smart Grid, Smart Transportation and so on, to assure the expected response from a complex system that relies on the smooth interaction and cooperation of diverse networked physical systems. The Wireless Sensors Networks (WSN) are a well-known wireless technology that are part of large CPS. The WSN aims at monitoring a physical system, object, (e.g., the environmental condition of a cargo container), and relaying data to the targeted processing element. The WSN communication reliability, as well as a restrained energy consumption, are expected features in a WSN. This paper shows the results obtained in a real WSN deployment, based on SunSPOT nodes, which carries out a fuzzy based control strategy to improve energy consumption while keeping communication reliability and computational resources usage among boundaries

¿Qué estructuras deductivas usan alumnos ingresantes a la Universidad?

This report presents the results of a research that inquired about the effects over freshmen of initial Mathematics courses at university have on the learning of contents which aims to the comprehension and use of deductive structures frequently used in reasoning or argumentations. This issue is interesting in Uruguay, because of students' high rates of desertion at first year. Antecedents to this study are an analysis of textbooks and classroom notes taken by students, in search of evidence about how explicit are these structures in teaching practices. Among the results observed, it may be highlighted that only the participation in Mathematics courses, in absence of intentional instruction, seems not to be enough to acquire skills on these subjects, and only few evidences were found that shows that teaching takes in consideration instruction in Logic, except in specific texts or coursesEn este trabajo se presentan resultados de una indagación que inquirió el efecto que, sobre estudiantes ingresantes a la universidad, tuvieron cursos universitarios iniciales de Matemática para adquirir conocimientos que faciliten la comprensión y el uso de estructuras deductivas de uso frecuente en razonamientos o argumentaciones. Este tema es de interés actual en Uruguay, debido a la preocupación que generan las altas tasas de rezago y abandono en primer año. Como antecedentes se efectuó un análisis de libros de texto usuales y de registros estudiantiles de clases, en busca de evidencias acerca del grado de explicitación de estas estructuras en la enseñanza. Entre los resultados observados destacan que los ingresantes muestran conocimientos acerca de las estructuras deductivas para comprender o construir razonamientos, y que la sola participación en cursos de Matemática, sin mediar una enseñanza intencional, no parece suficiente para adquirir habilidades en esta áre

Metodologías de aprendizaje, carga de trabajo y resultados académicos en Programación: percepción del alumno

Se presenta un estudio sobre la asignatura Programación de primer curso de los Grados impartidos en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación de la Universidad de Valladolid en el curso 2014-2015. Programación se articula en base a actividades semanales presenciales y no presenciales y diferentes apartados de evaluación continua que incentivan el aprendizaje constante semanal del alumno. Para llevar a cabo el estudio, se han utilizado encuestas de carga de trabajo que los alumnos han tenido que entregar semanalmente, indicando el tiempo dedicado a cada actividad propuesta en la asignatura, así como el dedicado al resto de asignaturas cursadas. También, se han utilizado sus opiniones recabadas al final del cuatrimestre sobre los aspectos más significativos de la metodología y los resultados académicos obtenidos teniendo en cuenta las 5 partes que conforman la evaluación, que son los entregables semanales, conocimientos mínimos, habilidades mínimas, proyecto de programación y actitud y participación. La dedicación constante y equilibrada a las actividades semanales es fundamental para desarrollar las competencias de Programación necesarias para superar las distintas partes de la evaluación. Los desequilibrios en la dedicación a las distintas asignaturas deben reducirse a partir de ajustes facilitados por estudios como el presentado
