42nd International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods, BEM/MRM 2019; ITeCons-University of Coimbra, Coimbra; Portugal; 2 July 2019 through 4 July 2019. - Publicado en WIT Transactions on Engineering Sciences, Volume 126, 2019, Pages 111-123This work presents a two-and-a-half dimensional (2.5D) spectral formulation based on the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) to study wave propagation in acoustic and elastic waveguides. The analysis involved superposing two dimensional (2D) problems with different longitudinal wavenumbers. A spectral finite element (SFEM) is proposed to represent waveguides in solids with arbitrary cross-section. Moreover, the BEM is extended to its spectral formulation (SBEM) to study unbounded fluid media and acoustic enclosures. Both approaches use Lagrange polynomials as element shape functions at the Legendre–Gauss–Lobatto (LGL) points. The fluid and solid subdomains are coupled by applying the appropriate boundary conditions at the limiting interface. The proposed method is verified by means of a benchmark problem regarding the scattering of waves by an elastic inclusion. The convergence and the computational effort are evaluated for different h-p strategies. Numerical results show good agreement with the reference solution. Finally, the proposed method is used to study the pressure field generated by an array of elastic fluid-filled scatterers immersed in an acoustic mediumMinisterio de Economía y Competitividad BIA2016-75042-C2-1-

In this paper we present the implementation of a general mechanism to deliver tests based on mobile devices and matrix codes. The system is an extension of Siette, and has not been specifically developed for any subject matter. To evaluate the performance of the system and show some of its capabilities, we have developed a test for a second-year college course on Botany at the School of Forestry Engineering. Students were equipped with iPads and took an outdoor test on plant species identification. All students were able to take and complete the test in a reasonable time. Opinions expressed anonymously by the students in a survey about the usability of the system and the usefulness of the test were very favorable. We think that the application presented in this paper can broaden the applicability of automatic assessment techniques. The presentation of this work has been co-founded by the Universidad de Málaga. Get PDF
The aim of this research was to analyze the thermal behavior of organic, semi-metallic and ceramic brake pads as a function of the stopping distance according to international standards. The chemical formulation of each of them is identified by micrography. The experimentation is carried out from the selection of the vehicle of the categories M1, N1. It is based on statistics from the AEADE and the selection of marketable brake pads in the Ecuadorian market that comply with the INEN 2185 Regulation.  These  pads  are  subjected  to  braking tests, the procedure and the selection of the necessary parameters for the braking tests are based on the ECE 13 - H regulation, verifying the minimum standards that are detailed there. The data is collected by means of a pyrometer and stored for statistical analysis to determine the behavior of the temperature generated in the brake pads with the different treatments. A variation of 34.49 °C in the organic type, 48.64 °C in the semi-metallic type and 52.98 °C in the ceramic was obtained. To validate the experiment, a multiple comparison analysis is performed using ADEVA to the temperature and stopping distance data of the treatments. The result is a probability ≤ 0.0001 for the validation of the null hypothesis. Thus, the alternative hypothesis was affirmed, the data was reliable, and the study validated.  It  is  concluded that  ceramic-type pads offer better performance with a temperature of 78.92 °C when braking at a braking speed of 50 km/h and 127.56 °C at a braking speed of 100 km/h, it was obtained an efficient braking distance at different initial braking speeds. It is recommending the use of ceramic type pads that guarantee the safety of the vehicle occupants

Coping and depressive symptoms in family carers of dependent adults aged 18 and over: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Being a family carer is associated with increased risk of experiencing depressive symptoms. Despite many decades of research investigating the association between coping strategies and depressive symptoms in carers results across studies remain contradictory. The objective of this study was to systematically review evidence on the association between depressive symptoms and coping strategies in carers of dependent people aged 18 and over and investigate potential sources of heterogeneity of findings. The study design was a systematic review and meta-analysis. We searched Pubmed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and LILACS up to April 2021. We performed meta-analyses following the PRISMA statement and several subgroup analyses to investigate whether cause of caring dependency, study design, and controlling for several biases influenced results. Fifty-nine studies met our inclusion criteria. We found a robust and statistically significant association between greater use of dysfunctional coping and higher depressive symptoms. Greater use of emotion-focused coping was associated with fewer depressive symptoms only in studies controlling for confounding bias. Use of problem-focused coping was related to fewer depressive symptoms in carers of frail older people. The combined use of both problem-focused and emotion-focused coping was associated with lower symptoms of depression. Our review concludes that the broad domain of dysfunctional coping is consistently associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms in carers. After controlling for confounders, emotion-focused coping and several of its individual strategies were consistently associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Whilst problem-focused coping and some of its individual strategies are also associated with lower depressive symptoms, these strategies may not be as helpful in all caregiving groups.Clinical Impact Statement: fcBoth broad dimensions of coping and individual coping strategies are important correlates of depressive symptoms in family carers, and should be utilized in informing and improving the effectiveness of future caregiving interventions

Negative-epsilon conditions in the dispersive LiNbO3-Ag nanoparticles composites

The silver (Ag)-embedded lithium niobate (LiNbO3) composites are theoretically analyzed under the effective medium Maxwell-Garnett approximation to account on the optimal conditions through which such composites present negative epsilon conditions. The dielectric function of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) is described by Drude theory with an additional Lorentz oscillator term to take into account the interband electronic transitions which typically occur in noble metals. The LiNbO3 dielectric function is evaluated through the Sellmeier equations. Once the effective dielectric function (epsilon(eff)) is evaluated, we investigate the negative epsilon condition (epsilon'(eff) < 0) as a function of the frequency. The results showed that, for given volumen fraction values, the negative epsilon (NE) condition is satisfied for critical sizes of Ag NPs. This condition defines an interval of energies, called NE range. That NE range enlarges for increasing radius and becames narrower for decreasing volume fractions. Furthermore, the calculated Frohlich frequency is nearly close to the lower-energy limit of NE range. In addition, the calculated extinction spectra of the composite are analyzed in terms of the radius of Ag NPs.This work is partially supported by Spanish MINECO under grants MAT2013-46649-C4-4-P, MAT2015 71070 REDC and TECHNOFUSION (II)-Comunidad de Madrid: CM (52013/MAE-2745

The contribution of microfluidics to the fight against tuberculosis

    Get PDF
The high mortality associated with tuberculosis brings forward the urgency of developing new therapies and strategies against the disease. With the advance of drug-resistant strains, traditional techniques have proven insufficient to manage the disease appropriately. Microfluidic devices have characteristics that can enhance treatment prescription and significantly advance our knowledge about the disease and its interaction within the human body. In addition, microfluidic systems provide advantages in terms of time and costs, which are particularly important in countries with low income and resources. This review will highlight how microdevices can help bridge the gaps in disease management, including their use for drug testing and development, drug susceptibility, basic research, and novel approaches to anti-TB vaccines and organ-on-chip studies. This project has received funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No. 853989.
