    Michigan’s Civil War Citizen-General: Alpheus S. Williams

Dempsey points out, as have others, that Williams deserved promotion to the rank of major general, given his good reputation and record in war. But the fact Williams was not a West Pointer worked against him, and it appears he did not cultivate the political support or seek the publicity he needed. Thus, he held his major general’s post with only brevet, or honorary rank, while proving himself a popular and respected general in the Union army’s Second, Twelfth and Twentieth Corps, with his soldiers giving him the nickname “Pap” (though pronouncing this “Pop”.

Michigan’s War: The Civil War in Documents

Students, researchers and readers interested in the Wolverine State’s contributions and roles in the Civil War have had plenty of sources available to them in local libraries over the years, some of them good ones – from reference volumes and bibliographies published by the Michigan Civil War Centennial Observance Commission and Wayne State University in the 1960s to a number of several annotated and anecdotal histories over the years for general readers by Michigan authors and scholars. Some of these titles, books by Richard Bak, Roger Rosentreter, Frederick Williams, Frank Woodford, and Jack Dempsey, appear in the bibliography of military history materials utilized in John W. Quist’s Michigan’s War: The Civil War in Documents

Analysis of the backscatter spectrum in an ionospheric modification experiment

    Get PDF
Predictions of the backscatter spectrum, including effects of ionospheric inhomogeneity, are compared with experimental observations of incoherent backscatter from an artificially heated region. Our calculations show that the strongest backscatter echo received is not from the reflection level, but from a region some distance below. Certain asymmetrical features are explained of the up-shifted and down-shifted plasma lines in the backscatter spectrum, and the several satellite peaks accompanying them

VALIDATION OF THE SENSEWEAR PRO2 ARMBAND CALORIMETER TO ASSESS ENERGY EXPENDITURE OF ADOLESCENTS DURING VARIOUS MODES OF ACTIVITYKim Crawford, PhDUniversity of Pittsburgh, 2004The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the validity of the SenseWearÂź Pro 2 Armband (SAB) to assess energy expenditure during various modes of physical activity in adolescents. It was hypothesized that measures of energy expenditure during treadmill and cycle ergometer exercise would not differ between the SAB and the criterion respiratory metabolic system (RMS) when examined for female and male subjects. Twenty-four healthy adolescents completed both the cycle ergometer and treadmill exercise protocols. The primary findings of this investigation were the SAB significantly underestimated energy expenditure during cycle ergometer exercise at the low (1.53 + 0.60 kcal.min-1; P<0.001) and moderate (2.48 + 0.95 kcal.min-1; P<0.001) intensities and for total energy expenditure (19.11 + 7.43 kcal; P<0.001) in both the female and male subjects. In the treadmill exercise, there were no significant differences between measures of energy expenditure during treadmill walking at 3.0 mph, 0% incline in female and male subjects. However, the SAB significantly underestimated measures of energy expenditure at 4.0 mph, 0% grade (0.86 + 0.84 kcal.min-1; P<0.001); 4.0 mph, 5% grade (2.13 + 1.40 kcal.min-1; P<0.001); 4.5 mph, 5% grade (2.97 + 1.56 kcal.min-1; P<0.001) and for total energy expenditure (23.66 + 14.92 kcal; P<0.001) during treadmill exercise in female and male subjects.Possible mechanisms underlying the underestimation of energy expenditure by the SAB are complex but may include: the use of generalized exercise algorithms to predict all types of physical activity; possible disproportionate reliance on the two-axis accelerometer during non-weight bearing and graded exercises; the delay in body heat transfer to the skin; and the inability to account for variability in walking gait, lean body mass and fat mass. All of these factors impact on the accuracy of the SAB to accurately estimate energy expenditure. This is the first study to examine the accuracy of the SAB in adolescent subjects and is an important first step in validating SAB technology in adolescents

Hysteresis : understanding the housing aspirations gap

The research ‘Understanding the Housing Aspirations of People in Scotland’ was funded by the Scottish Government.Drawing on qualitative research on housing aspirations in Scotland, the objectives of this paper are three-fold. Firstly, this paper will contextualise the subject of housing aspirations within relevant research literature and situate it within wider debates which revolve around the relationship between housing and social class. Secondly, in order to understand the implications of the research, this paper uses Bourdieu’s notion of ‘sociodicy’ to help explain the ‘social’ reasons which incline people to have housing aspirations. Thirdly, the data will be analysed to understand the differences in ‘aspirations’ between groups, concluding that the generational differences, which correspond to the epochal changes in the economy, are more important than class differences when understanding the uneven distribution of housing outcomes and housing wealth in developed societies. This paper concludes that the Bourdieusian concept of hysteresis explains the gap between the subjective expectations of young ‘professionals’ and the objective chances of their realisation.PostprintPeer reviewe

    EPIC Team Meetings

EPIC Team Meetings EPIC represents: effective and empowering agendas and action plans, productive product notebooks, information drill down, and collaborative communication. During this seminar segment, sample items such as agendas, action plans, product notebooks, and drill down forms will be shared as well as explained how they are utilized in our team meetings to cover all areas of student supports and interventions. SWIS drill down behavior data and interventions; attendance reports and supports; academic progress and interventions for Tier 2, 3, and 4 students; problem solutions; and action development are major areas covered within our team meetings which will be shared during this seminar, Past experiences and growth challenges will be shared so that other teams can learn from our team in order to make their team meetings more EPIC in their own buildings. Learning Outcomes: Leadership teams will learn how to make their team meetings EPIC as described above. Leadership teams.will learn how to use effective forms and agendas for streamlining meetings in order to openly discuss effective interventions and supports which are data driven according to their school needs. Leadership teams will learn from a school’s past experiences and growth challenges in order to not make the same mistakes and build stronger team meetings which will mean more effective and specific targeted interventions and supports for student, teacher, and system needs within their school buildings

The Immigration Act and the ‘Right to Rent’ : exploring governing tensions within and beyond the state

    Get PDF
Using Scotland as a case study, this paper will review the implications of the ‘right to rent’ section of the Immigration Act 2016 for matters of devolved legal competence, such as housing. Outlining the main criticisms from a wide range of agencies and institutions, this paper will go on to argue that these measures cannot be understood in isolation from the wider activities of a neo-liberal government embroiled in the pursuit of border enforcement at one end, while utilising non-state actors in petty sovereign roles to enforce and reify the border on the other. In doing so, we highlight governing tensions within and beyond the state, including between governments at the UK and Scotland level, between landlords and the state, and between landlords and their tenants. In doing so, we illuminate the ways in which the Act is augmenting the State’s role by making border agents of us all.PostprintPeer reviewe

Extension has long been successful at recruiting and serving diverse audiences, and with the rapid growth of Latino families across the United States, many Extension professionals are discovering an increased need to recruit and serve Latinos. This article shares successful recruitment strategies incorporated in a project that recruited low-income Latino parents of young children. Strategies included 1.) Knowing your audience and gaining a strong understanding of the Latino culture, 2.) Strengthening relationships with organizations already serving Latino families, and 3.) Building relationships within the Latino community
