    Using Online Video Observations and Real Time, Peer Reflective Analysis of Culturally Responsive Teaching Pedagogy in a University Teacher Preparatory Program for Preservice Teachers

    This research aimed to understand the impacts of using online video observations and real-time peer reflection to teach and address culturally responsive teaching in a Pacific Northwest university’s teacher preparatory program. Six active university students enrolled in a university’s new teacher preparatory program (i.e., preservice, new teacher candidates) actively participated in all areas of this study (i.e., nonrandom sampling) and provided both quantitative and qualitative data. Study participants completed self-evaluative pre- and post-surveys in a research group session. Surveys were built using the ready 4 rigor framework (Hammond & Jackson, 2015) and the four areas of culturally responsive teaching as a foundation for a psychometric response scale (i.e., Likert scale 1–5) and peer reflection prompts. In group settings, study participants watched videos of their peers and themselves engaging in classroom instruction. After video observations, they participated in real-time, peer reflective analysis of teaching performance. Using a quantitative and qualitative approach to analyze the pre- and post-survey responses and reflective discussions, data revealed participants gained a deeper understanding of their ability to deliver culturally responsive teaching pedagogy. Overall, these data points suggested a change in participant awareness of culturally responsive teaching performance levels before and after engaging in video observations and real-time, peer reflective analysis involving culturally responsive teaching pedagogy

    Genomewide association studies (GWAS) have proven a powerful hypothesis-free method to identify common disease-associated variants. Even quite large GWAS, however, have only at best identified moderate proportions of the genetic variants contributing to disease heritability. To provide cost-effective genotyping of common and rare variants to map the remaining heritability and to fine-map established loci, the Immunochip Consortium has developed a 200,000 SNP chip that has been produced in very large numbers for a fraction of the cost of GWAS chips.     Current BPM approaches and standards have not sufficiently reduced the Business-IT gap. Indeed, today's solutions are mostly domainindependent and platform-dependent, which limits the ability of business matter experts to express business intent and enact process change. In contrast, the tool presented in this paper supports an approach that focuses on BPM and SOA environments in a domain-dependent and platform-independent way. We propose to add a domain specific-layer on top of current solutions so that business stakeholders can design and understand their processes in a more intuitive way.     Rapid, non-invasive characterization of the dispersity of emulsions via microwaves

    A rapid and non-invasive method to determine the dispersity of emulsions is developed based on the interrelationship between the droplet size distribution and the dielectric properties of emulsions. A range of water-in-oil emulsions with different water contents and droplet size distributions were analysed using a microwave cavity perturbation technique together with dynamic light scattering. The results demonstrate that the dielectric properties, as measured by non-invasive microwave cavity analysis, can be used to characterise the dispersity of emulsions, and is also capable of characterizing heavy oil emulsions. This technique has great potential for industrial applications to examine the sedimentation, creaming and hence the stability of emulsions

    Clinical relevance of digital dentistry during COVID-19 outbreak : a scoped review

    Aim: To perform a scoped literature review on advantages of digital workflows in dentistry that could be widely adopted to address safety issues raised during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Recent studies on any advantages of digital dentistry – as compared to conventional methods – that could help addressing the new safety demands for dental treatments that emerged due to the current pandemic were included. PUBMED, Embase, and Web of Knowledge databases were searched for eligible articles published in the last five years. The guidelines of PRISMA statement were followed during data extraction and evaluation. Results: The present search strategy yielded 181 publications. After application of exclusion criteria, a total of 34 studies were finally considered eligible to be discussed. Among the most important advantages of digital dentistry that contribute to safety during the current pandemic are: reduced number of clinical appointments required, shorter chairside time, less invasive surgeries and safer procedures. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the findings observed herein suggest that the use of digital workflows in dentistry could lead to increased safety and reduced transmission of COVID-19 during the current pandemic.peer-reviewe

    El presente estudio tiene un enfoque cualitativo de modelo hermenéutico con un alcance descriptivo. El objetivo de la investigación es identificar los factores que posibilitan el proceso de resocialización y la reducción del consumo en los habitantes de calle. Los participantes fueron 12 personas mayores de 18 años en proceso de resocialización, a quienes se les realizó una entrevista semiestructurada que indagaba por aspectos de la esfera personal, familiar y psicosocial. Entre los principales hallazgos se encuentran: elementos motivacionales, valores, actitudes, aptitudes y redes de apoyo que incluyen a la familia, amigos e instituciones. Además, los resultados muestran que los factores espirituales, religiosos y las expectativas frente al consumo, son igualmente importantes para el proceso

    A common NFKB1 variant detected through antibody analysis in UK Biobank predicts risk of infection and allergy

    Infectious agents contribute significantly to the global burden of diseases through both acute infection and their chronic sequelae. We leveraged the UK Biobank to identify genetic loci that influence humoral immune response to multiple infections. From 45 genome-wide association studies in 9,611 participants from UK Biobank, we identified NFKB1 as a locus associated with quantitative antibody responses to multiple pathogens, including those from the herpes, retro-, and polyoma-virus families. An insertion-deletion variant thought to affect NFKB1 expression (rs28362491), was mapped as the likely causal variant and could play a key role in regulation of the immune response. Using 121 infection- and inflammation-related traits in 487,297 UK Biobank participants, we show that the deletion allele was associated with an increased risk of infection from diverse pathogens but had a protective effect against allergic disease. We propose that altered expression of NFKB1, as a result of the deletion, modulates hematopoietic pathways and likely impacts cell survival, antibody production, and inflammation. Taken together, we show that disruptions to the tightly regulated immune processes may tip the balance between exacerbated immune responses and allergy, or increased risk of infection and impaired resolution of inflammation
