    SimHealth: Estimating Small Area Populations Using Deterministic Spatial Microsimulation in Leeds and Bradford.

    The increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes in recent decades is often cited as a serious public health concern, lowering life expectancy and costing the National Health Service (NHS) billions of pounds each year. However, measuring diabetes prevalence proves challenging; the best estimates are based on the annual Health Survey for England (HSE) and little is currently available at the small area level. Simulation models are increasingly used in health research to predict future prevalence, cost of treatment, provision of care and the possible outcomes of policy intervention. Previous research shows the relevance of this technique in modelling the outcomes of changes in taxation and child benefit policy, or analysing health inequalities. This paper introduces SimHealth, a small-area diabetes prevalence model for Leeds and Bradford, West Yorkshire created as part of a generic model framework. The process of configuring an optimal spatial microsimulation model, building on earlier research, is detailed with the aim of improving and extending existing simulation models

    HSF(C): A Software Verifier Based on Horn Clauses

    Abstract. HSF(C) is a tool that automates verification of safety and liveness properties for C programs. This paper describes the verification approach taken by HSF(C) and provides instructions on how to install and use the tool. 1 Verification Approach HSF(C) is a tool for verification of C programs based on predicate abstraction and refinement following the counterexample-guided abstraction refinement (CE-GAR) paradigm [4]. There are a number of successful tools [1, 7, 5, 10, 2] based on abstraction refinement. We give here a brief description of our verification algorithm; interested readers can find more details about the underlying theory behind our implementation in [10, 6]. The algorithm used in HSF(C) is a generalization of the CEGAR scheme that deals with Horn-like clauses instead of transition systems/programs with procedures.     The pharmacokinetics of medetomidine administered subcutaneously during Isoflurane anaesthesia in Sprague-Dawley rats

    Anaesthetic protocols involving the combined use of a sedative agent, medetomidine, and an anaesthetic agent, isoflurane, are increasingly being used in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of the rodent brain. Despite the popularity of this combination, a standardised protocol for the combined use of medetomidine and isoflurane has not been established, resulting in inconsistencies in the reported use of these drugs. This study investigated the pharmacokinetic detail required to standardise the use of medetomidine and isoflurane in rat brain fMRI studies. Using mass spectrometry, serum concentrations of medetomidine were determined in Sprague-Dawley rats during medetomidine and isoflurane anaesthesia. The serum concentration of medetomidine for administration with 0.5% (vapouriser setting) isoflurane was found to be 14.4 ng/mL (±3.0 ng/mL). The data suggests that a steady state serum concentration of medetomidine when administered with 0.5% (vapouriser setting) isoflurane can be achieved with an initial subcutaneous (SC) dose of 0.12 mg/kg of medetomidine followed by a 0.08 mg/kg/h SC infusion of medetomidine. Consideration of these results for future studies will facilitate standardisation of medetomidine and isoflurane anaesthetic protocols during fMRI data acquisition

    Magnetic field-dependent interplay between incoherent and Fermi liquid transport mechanisms in low-dimensional tau phase organic conductors

    We present an electrical transport study of the 2-dimensional (2D) organic conductor tau-(P-(S,S)-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuBr)_2(AuBr_2)_y (y = 0.75) at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The inter-plane resistivity rho_zz increases with decreasing temperature, with the exception of a slight anomaly at 12 K. Under a magnetic field B, both rho_zz and the in-plane resistivity plane rho_xx show a pronounced negative and hysteretic magnetoresistance with Shubnikov de Haas (SdH)oscillations being observed in some (high quality)samples above 15 T. Contrary to the predicted single, star-shaped, closed orbit Fermi surface from band structure calculations (with an expected approximate area of 12.5% of A_FBZ), two fundamental frequencies F_l and F_h are detected in the SdH signal. These orbits correspond to 2.4% and 6.8% of the area of the first Brillouin zone(A_FBZ), with effective masses F_l = 4.0 +/- 0.5 and F_h = 7.3 +/- 0.1. The angular dependence, in tilted magnetic fields of F_l and F_h, reveals the 2D character of the FS and Angular dependent magnetoresistance (AMRO) further suggests a FS which is strictly 2-D where the inter-plane hopping t_c is virtually absent or incoherent. The Hall constant R_xy is field independent, and the Hall mobility increases by a factor of 3 under moderate magnetic fields. Our observations suggest a unique physical situation where a stable 2D Fermi liquid state in the molecular layers are incoherently coupled along the least conducting direction. The magnetic field not only reduces the inelastic scattering between the 2D metallic layers, but it also reveals the incoherent nature of interplane transport in the AMRO spectrum. The apparent ferromagnetism of the hysteretic magnetoresistance remains an unsolved problem.Comment: 33 pages, 11 figure

    Bereavement care for ethnic minority communities : a systematic review of access to, models of, outcomes from, and satisfaction with, service provision

    Objectives To review and synthesize the existing evidence on bereavement care, within the United Kingdom (UK), for ethnic minority communities in terms of barriers and facilitators to access; models of care; outcomes from, and satisfaction with, service provision. Design A systematic review adopting a framework synthesis approach was conducted. An electronic search of the literature was undertaken in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Social Work Abstract and CINAHL via EBSCO, Global Health, Cochrane library, the Trip database and ProQuest between 1995 and 2020. Search terms included bereavement care, ethnic minority populations and the UK setting. Results From 3,185 initial records, following screening for eligibility, and full-text review of 164 articles, seven studies were identified. There was no research literature outlining the role of family, friends and existing networks; and a real absence of evidence about outcomes and levels of satisfaction for those from an ethnic minority background who receive bereavement care. From the limited literature, the overarching theme for barriers to bereavement care was ‘unfamiliarity and irregularities’. Four identified subthemes were ‘lack of awareness’; ‘variability in support’; ‘type and format of support’; and ‘culturally specific beliefs’. The overarching theme for facilitators for bereavement care was ‘accessibility’ with the two subthemes being ‘readily available information’ and ‘inclusive approaches’. Three studies reported on examples of different models of care provision. Conclusions This review reveals a stark lack of evidence about bereavement care for ethnic minority populations. In particular, understanding more about the role of family, friends and existing support systems, alongside outcomes and satisfaction will begin to develop the evidence base underpinning current provision. Direct user-representation through proactive engagement and co-design approaches may begin to determine the most appropriate models and format of bereavement care for ethnic minority communities to inform service design and delivery

    Symmetries and Elasticity of Nematic Gels

    A nematic liquid-crystal gel is a macroscopically homogeneous elastic medium with the rotational symmetry of a nematic liquid crystal. In this paper, we develop a general approach to the study of these gels that incorporates all underlying symmetries. After reviewing traditional elasticity and clarifying the role of broken rotational symmetries in both the reference space of points in the undistorted medium and the target space into which these points are mapped, we explore the unusual properties of nematic gels from a number of perspectives. We show how symmetries of nematic gels formed via spontaneous symmetry breaking from an isotropic gel enforce soft elastic response characterized by the vanishing of a shear modulus and the vanishing of stress up to a critical value of strain along certain directions. We also study the phase transition from isotropic to nematic gels. In addition to being fully consistent with approaches to nematic gels based on rubber elasticity, our description has the important advantages of being independent of a microscopic model, of emphasizing and clarifying the role of broken symmetries in determining elastic response, and of permitting easy incorporation of spatial variations, thermal fluctuations, and gel heterogeneity, thereby allowing a full statistical-mechanical treatment of these novel materials.Comment: 21 pages, 4 eps figure

    Low Q^2 Jet Production at HERA and Virtual Photon Structure

    The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet cross-sections dsigep/dEt* and dsigmep/deta*, where Et* and eta* are the transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0 < Q2 < 49 GeV2 and 0.3 < y < 0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2.Comment: 20 pages, 5 Figure

    Energy Flow in the Hadronic Final State of Diffractive and Non-Diffractive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic epep scattering, in which a sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general tendencies of the data but in all give a worse description.Comment: 22 pages, latex, 6 Figures appended as uuencoded fil

    A Search for Selectrons and Squarks at HERA

    Data from electron-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV are used for a search for selectrons and squarks within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The decays of selectrons and squarks into the lightest supersymmetric particle lead to final states with an electron and hadrons accompanied by large missing energy and transverse momentum. No signal is found and new bounds on the existence of these particles are derived. At 95% confidence level the excluded region extends to 65 GeV for selectron and squark masses, and to 40 GeV for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 6 Figure
