    Does Gender Moderate Core Deficits in ASD? An Investigation into Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors in Girls and Boys with ASD

    Due to the uneven gender ratio of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), girls are rarely studied independently from boys. Research focusing on Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors (RRBs) indicates that above the age of six girls have fewer and/or different RRBs than boys with ASD. In this study we investigated whether girls and boys with ASD demonstrated similar rates and types of RRBs in early childhood, using discrete observational coding from a video-taped play interaction. Twenty-nine girls with ASD were matched to 29 boys based on ASD severity. While boys in our sample demonstrated a greater frequency of RRBs, this was not significant and our findings indicate that girls and boys under five are more similar than dissimilar on this core deficit. However our data also revealed a trend toward gender-differential growth trajectories – a finding worthy of further investigation in larger samples

    Conceptualising schools as a source of social capital for HIV affected children in southern Africa

    Many AIDS-affected African children lack forms of adult support and guidance traditionally provided by families. There is growing policy attention to the role schools might play in caring for children in extreme adversity in ways that go far beyond traditional education. We use the concept of the “HIV competent school,” which incorporates bonding, bridging and linking social capital, to frame a selective review of the literature on school responses to HIV/AIDS in southern African countries, and an in-depth case study of indigenous school responses in eastern Zimbabwe. We call for greater attention to the ethic of care emerging from the interaction between AIDS-affected children and relevant peers and adults in the school setting and the way in which this is limited or enabled in particular social settings

    Gender Equality and the Global Gender Gap in Life Expectancy: An Exploratory Analysis of 152 Countries

    When looking at life expectancy (LE) by sex, women live longer than men in all countries. Biological factors alone do not explain gender differences in LE, and examining structural differences may help illuminate other explanatory factors. The aim of this research is to analyse the influence of gender inequality on the gender gap in LE globally. We have carried out a regression analysis between the gender gap in relativised LE and the UN Gender Inequality Index (GII), with a sensitivity analysis conducted for its three dimensions, stratified by the six World Health Organization (WHO) regions. We adjusted the model by taking into consideration gross national income (GNI), democratic status and rural population. The results indicated a positive association for the European region (ß=0.184) and the Americas (ß=0.136) in our adjusted model. Conversely, for the African region, the relations between gender equality and the LE gender gap were found to be negative (ß=-0.125). The findings suggest that in the WHO European region and the Americas, greater gender equality leads to a narrowing of the gender LE gap, while it has a contrary relationship in Africa.     Social media can be both a source of information and misinformation during health emergencies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media became a ubiquitous tool for people to communicate and represents a rich source of data researchers can use to analyse users' experiences, knowledge and sentiments. Research on social media posts during COVID-19 has identified, to date, the perpetuity of traditional gendered norms and experiences. Yet these studies are mostly based on Western social media platforms. Little is known about gendered experiences of lockdown communicated on non-Western social media platforms. Using data from Weibo, China's leading social media platform, we examine gendered user patterns and sentiment during the first wave of the pandemic between 1 January 2020 and 1 July 2020. We find that Weibo posts by self-identified women and men conformed with some gendered norms identified on other social media platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic (posting patterns and keyword usage) but not all (sentiment). This insight may be important for targeted public health messaging on social media during future health emergencies

    Interpersonal Experiential Learning and Cancer Research Training Designed to Enhance the Motivation of Participating Interns Utilizing Self-Determination Theory: A Longitudinal Study with Photovoice Methodology

    Historically, the underrepresentation of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, disabled, and diverse racial/ethnic groups in STEM fields is prevalent. Equity in stem fields allows for different perspectives and knowledge backgrounds allows for the cognitive diversity needed to tackle complex research topics. The Knight Scholars Program (KSP) aims to support underrepresented and disadvantaged high school and undergraduate students pursuing a research career by teaching them the tools they need to succeed. Spanning over three summers, KSP utilized the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) of motivation to create an inclusive learning environment and to strengthen the high schoolers\u27 motivation to pursue research careers focusing on the three physiological needs: autonomy, relatedness, and competency. Photovoices created by a cohort about their overall experiences during the two ten-week-long program segments underwent qualitative analysis to gauge the influences on scholars\u27 motivations present during their participation via qualitative analysis. These findings, discussed in the context of trainee recruitment and retention of individuals supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility goals of programs, highlight the need for systematic support of trainees’ inherent needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competency
