The flat and continuous relief of the Cerrado was fundamental to occupying policies that compete with natural vegetation, making it necessary to develop approaches that reconcile human interests with natural processes. Thus, it is necessary to characterize the relief and its influences on human occupation. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between relief and human occupation. Geomorphometric parameters of the reliefs of three sub-basins, belonging to a hydrographic region of the Planalto Central (Tocantins / Araguaia, São Francisco, and Paraná), were compared using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital images. For the delimitation of the relief units, the color composition was generated in the RGB channels (elevation, slope, and minimum curvature) and evaluations were performed between the equivalent relief units in the different sub-basins through the Kruskal-Wallis test. Relief units were used as a natural boundary for the description of land use and coverage through the TerraClass Project's digital base. It was evidenced that the elevation, slope and minimum curvature presented significant difference between the basins. In flat reliefs such as the Chapadas, Rampas de Colúvio and the Mesas predominated agriculture and pasture. In the dissected reliefs, such as the Frente de Recuo Erosivo, Ambientes Colinosos, and Vales, natural coverings and pastures predominated. Integrated studies are important in defining strategies for the protection and maintenance of natural ecosystems and water resources. These results show that human occupation is limited by relief

Education in the learning society: an overview over the educational potential of the internet

In this paper we discuss the new learning models that emerged in the global network of the internet. More than communication channels or means to access the information, ICT and Internet can be powerful cognitive and social tools that allow for the creation and management of new learning environments where space and time are flexible and personalized. We also analyse the subtle change in the Internet paradigm from stage 1.0 to 2.0 generation where the consumer becomes an information producer. Some Web 2.0 tools are presented and, based upon research, we discuss their potential for education.CIE

Determinants of nursing homes performance: the case of portuguese Santas Casas da Misericórdia

This study aims to evaluate the economic efficiency of Nursing Homes owned by 96 Santas Casas da Misericórdia (SCM) and the determinants that influenced their efficiency in 2012 and 2013. The SCM are the oldest non-profit entities, which belong to Third Sector in Portugal, provide this social response and receive significant financial contributions annually from the state. The study is developed in two stages. In the first stage, the efficiency scores were calculated through the non-parametric DEA technique. In the second stage, Tobit regression is used to verify the effect of certain organizational variables on efficiency, namely the number of users and existence of Nursing Home chains. The results of the DEA model show that the efficiency average is 81.9%, and only 10 out of 96 Nursing Homes are efficient. Tobit regression shows that the number of users has a positive effect on the efficiency of Nursing Homes, whereas the existence of Nursing Home chains affects their efficiency negatively.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Engineering business is a demanding and dynamic market, which universities must understand and accompany. Being aware of the market needs is a step forward in training successful professionals. The presented works contributed to enhance the present discussion addressing different topics like emergent technologies, professional, scientific and social competences or projects that allow students to perform the first contacts with the real world. The view of students, teachers and company supervisors are considered.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Engineering education addressing professional challenges

Engineering profession is very demanding because of the different competences young graduates need to master. The exponential growth in technology, even though very beneficial to all, tends to worsen their needs of expertise, having to endlessly update themselves. Engineering education has been addressing these issues, hoping to contribute to better teaching practices more aligned with engineering professional world. Students must develop the necessary competences from the beginning of their education and engage into actively learning the subjects. Three aspects of this problematic are presented in this special session: educational experiences, students’ learning and professional challengesThe chairs of this track session would like to thank the members of its Scientific Committee and all contributing authors for their efforts in enhancing the discussion upon this thematic. The authors would also like to acknowledge the financial support provided by the Foundation for Science and Technology Project, FCT UID/EQU/04730/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
