    A Monolithically Fabricated Combinatorial Mixer for Microchip-Based High-Throughput Cell Culturing Assays

    We present an integrated method to fabricate 3- D microfluidic networks and fabricated the first on-chip cell culture device with an integrated combinatorial mixer. The combinatorial mixer is designed for screening the combinatorial effects of different compounds on cells. The monolithic fabrication method with parylene C as the basic structural material allows us to avoid wafer bonding and achieves precise alignment between microfluidic channels. As a proof-of-concept, we fabricated a device with a three-input combinatorial mixer and demonstrated that the mixer can produce all the possible combinations. Also, we demonstrated the ability to culture cells on-chip and performed a simple cell assay on-chip using trypan blue to stain dead cells

    Platinum Black Electroplated Impedance Particle Sensor

    We present a micro electrical impedance particle sensor. To solve the problem of large electrode electrolyte interface impedance, we electroplated the electrodes with platinum black. Devices are fabricated with integrated parylene technology. An electrical model for the system is proposed and analytic solutions are obtained. Impedance spectra measurement of the device filled with various media are in excellent agreement with model analysis. Signals from individual 10 ”m polystyrene beads passing the sensing electrodes are successfully obtained

    This paper reports on large area plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of nanocrystalline graphite (NCG) on thermally grown SiO2 wafer, quartz and sapphire substrates. Grown films are evaluated using Raman spectroscopy, ellipsometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Electrical characterization and optical transmission measurementsindicate promising properties of this material for use as transparent electrodes and for electronic device application.     Monolithic 3-D Microfluidic Device for Cell Assay with an Integrated Combinatorial Mixer

    We present a novel cell culture device with an integrated 3-D microfluidic mixer for screening the combinatorial effects of multiple compounds on cultured cells and demonstrated the ability to simultaneously treat arrays of cells with different combinations of compounds. The proof-of-concept chip, which has a three-input combinatorial mixer with eight micro culture chambers, was monolithically fabricated utilizing the surface micromaching of parylene C (poly-para-xylylene C). By having several microfluidic "overpasses" to allow one microfluidic channel to cross over other microfluidic channels, the combinatorial mixer was able to simultaneously generate all the combinations of the input fluidic streams for output to the microchambers. We verified that parylene C is a biocompatible substrate for cell culturing and also showed cell culturing inside the micro culture chambers. The feasibility of using the integrated combinatorial mixer for cell assaying was demonstrated with experiments using three different cell stains, and results showed the cells in different chambers were stained with varying color patterns

    Air-cored machines offer benefits in terms the elimination of magnetic attraction forces between stator and rotor. With no iron in the stator there is not a good thermal conduction path for heat generated by Joule losses in the stator winding. Results from both models and experimental tests are provided in this paper to investigate different methods of cooling air-cored windings, including natural air-cooling, direct liquid cooling and the use of heat pipes

    GroundNLQ @ Ego4D Natural Language Queries Challenge 2023

    In this report, we present our champion solution for Ego4D Natural Language Queries (NLQ) Challenge in CVPR 2023. Essentially, to accurately ground in a video, an effective egocentric feature extractor and a powerful grounding model are required. Motivated by this, we leverage a two-stage pre-training strategy to train egocentric feature extractors and the grounding model on video narrations, and further fine-tune the model on annotated data. In addition, we introduce a novel grounding model GroundNLQ, which employs a multi-modal multi-scale grounding module for effective video and text fusion and various temporal intervals, especially for long videos. On the blind test set, GroundNLQ achieves 25.67 and 18.18 for R1@IoU=0.3 and R1@IoU=0.5, respectively, and surpasses all other teams by a noticeable margin.     American Telemedicine Association’s Principles for Delivering Telerehabilitation Services

    Telehealth is a broad term used to describe the use of electronic or digital information and communications technologies to support clinical healthcare, patient and professional health related education, and public health and health administration. Telerehabilitation refers to the delivery of rehabilitation and habilitation services via information and communication technologies (ICT), also commonly referred to as” telehealth” technologies. Telerehabilitation services can include evaluation, assessment, monitoring, prevention, intervention, supervision, education, consultation, and coaching. Telerehabilitation services can be deployed across all patient populations and multiple healthcare settings including clinics, homes, schools, or community-based worksites. This document was adapted from the American Telemedicine Association’s (ATA) “A Blueprint for Telerehabilitation Guidelines” (2010) and reflects the current utilization of telerehabilitation services. It was developed collaboratively by members of the ATA Telerehabilitation Special Interest Group, with input and guidance from other practitioners in the field, strategic stakeholders, and ATA staff. Its purpose is to inform and assist practitioners in providing effective and secure services that are based on client needs, current empirical evidence, and available technologies. Rehabilitation professionals, in conjunction with professional associations and other organizations are encouraged to use this document as a resource for developing discipline-specific standards, guidelines, and practice requirements.Keywords: American Telemedicine Association, Habilitation, Rehabilitation, Telehealth, Telepractice

    Chlorpromazine for schizophrenia: a Cochrane systematic review of 50 years of randomised controlled trials

    BACKGROUND: Chlorpromazine (CPZ) remains one of the most common drugs used for people with schizophrenia worldwide, and a benchmark against which other treatments can be evaluated. Quantitative reviews are rare; this one evaluates the effects of chlorpromazine in the treatment of schizophrenia in comparison with placebo. METHODS: We sought all relevant randomised controlled trials (RCT) comparing chlorpromazine to placebo by electronic and reference searching, and by contacting trial authors and the pharmaceutical industry. Data were extracted from selected trials and, where possible, synthesised and random effects relative risk (RR), the number needed to treat (NNT) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) calculated. RESULTS: Fifty RCTs from 1955–2000 were included with 5276 people randomised to CPZ or placebo. They constitute 2008 person-years spent in trials. Meta-analysis of these trials showed that chlorpromazine promotes a global improvement (n = 1121, 13 RCTs, RR 0.76 CI 0.7 to 0.9, NNT 7 CI 5 to 10), although a considerable placebo response is also seen. People allocated to chlorpromazine tended not to leave trials early in both the short (n = 945, 16 RCTs, RR 0.74 CI 0.5 to 1.1) and medium term (n = 1861, 25 RCTs, RR 0.79 CI 0.6 to 1.1). There were, however, many adverse effects. Chlorpromazine is sedating (n = 1242, 18 RCTs, RR 2.3 CI 1.7 to 3.1, NNH 6 CI 5 to 8), increases a person's chances of experiencing acute movement disorders, Parkinsonism and causes low blood pressure with dizziness and dry mouth. CONCLUSION: It is understandable why the World Health Organization (WHO) have endorsed and included chlorpromazine in their list of essential drugs for use in schizophrenia. Low- and middle-income countries may have more complete evidence upon which to base their practice compared with richer nations using recent innovations
