Non-invasive evaluation of left ventricular afterload, part 2 : arterial pressure-flow and pressure-volume relations in humans

The mechanical load imposed by the systemic circulation to the left ventricle is an important determinant of normal and abnormal cardiovascular function. Left ventricular afterload is determined by complex time-varying phenomena, which affect pressure and flow patterns generated by the pumping ventricle. Left ventricular afterload is best described in terms of pressure-flow relations, allowing for quantification of various components of load using simplified biomechanical models of the circulation, with great potential for mechanistic understanding of the role of central hemodynamics in cardiovascular disease and the effects of therapeutic interventions. In the second part of this tutorial, we review analytic methods used to characterize left ventricular afterload, including analyses of central arterial pressure-flow relations and windkessel modeling (pressure-volume relations). Conceptual descriptions of various models and methods are emphasized over mathematical ones. Our review is aimed at helping researchers and clinicians obtain and interpret results from analyses of left ventricular afterload in clinical and epidemiological settings

La teoría de las uniones aduaneras y el Pacto Andino

Examina las alternativas del Perú frente al esquema de integración del Grupo Andino (GRAN). La importancia de este análisis se vincula con la decisión que, sobre su permanencia en dicho proceso, deberá tomar el gobierno peruano a fines de este año. El punto de partida es la teoría pura de las uniones aduaneras, sus principales tópicos y líneas de pensamiento. El ensayo establece condiciones genéricas bajo las cuales un proceso de integración resulta beneficioso. La evaluación recurre, asimismo, a un análisis de los acuerdos y decisiones celebrado en el marco del GRAN.This paper examines the Peruvian alternatives before the Andean Group integration scheme. The importance of this analysis is related to the decision of permanence that the Peruvian government shall take at the end of 1993. The start point is the pure theory of customs unions, its principal topics and ways of thinking. The essay establishes generical conditions under which an integration process results beneficial. The evaluation reverts also to an analysis of the last agreements and decisions taken under the frame of the Andean Group

Estimación de la demanda de agua por usuarios con fuente propia en Perú: una aproximación econométrica usando datos de panel

Al respecto, el trabajo se centra en estimar la elasticidad-precio de la demanda respecto a la tarifa aplicada por la empresa operadora de los acuíferos de Lima, SEDAPAL S.A., encontrándose que los usuarios presentan baja sensibilidad a la variación en las tarifas, estimándose la elasticidad precio en el rango de -0.42 a -0.62. Adicionalmente, haciendo el análisis a nivel de tipo de usuario, se encuentra que los usuarios de tipo industrial (-0.14) son menos sensibles a variaciones en la tarifa (destacándose los usuarios del sector de alimentos y bebidas) que las de tipo comercial (-0.21 a -0.40)
