A comparative study of the phenomenon of false friends in SMG and CSG

    Get PDF
The present dissertation examines the phenomenon of false friends presenting the evolution of research regarding the same, the theoretical background (definition, linguistic levels involved, total vs. partial, reasons of emergence, the mechanism of borrowing and its importance, etc.) and the practical side of problems caused in communication due to their existence. The aim of the dissertation is not only to present false friends as a linguistic occurrence between languages (interlinguistic false friends) and its many facets, but mainly in delimitating the existence of false friends at the intralinguistic level, namely between varieties of the same language. The thesis presents the specialized case of false friends between two varieties of Modern Greek, i.e. Standard Modern Greek (SMG) and Cypriot (Standard) Greek. The first variety is used in Greece whereas the second in Cyprus and the sociolinguistic situation that characterizes the two varieties is described, in order to clarify the lack of awareness as regards the existence of the phenomenon. Apart from the theoretical background for the phenomenon and the specifics of the specific intralinguistic faux amis, hte thesis boasts the presentation and analysis of 194 false friends between the two varieties of Mordern Greek. The 194 pairs appear as lemmas in Greek accompanied by phonetic transcription, exclusive SMG or C(S)G meanings, as well as common meanings (where there are), real examples of usage in the Cypriot context and an analysis that attempts to explain their provenance and relation

Optimisation of a high-efficiency solar-driven organic rankine cycle for applications in the built environment

Energy security, pollution and sustainability are major challenges presently facing the international community, in response to which increasing quantities of renewable energy are to be generated in the urban environment. Consequently, recent years have seen a strong increase in the uptake of solar technologies in the building sector. In this work, the potential of a solar combined heat and power (CHP) system based on an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) engine is investigated in a domestic setting. Unlike previous studies that focus on the optimisation of the ORC subsystem, this study performs a complete system optimisation considering both the design parameters of the solar collector array and the ORC engine simultaneously. Firstly, we present thermodynamic models of different collectors, including flat-plate and evacuated-tube designs, coupled to a non-recuperative sub-critical ORC architecture that delivers power and hot water by using thermal energy rejected from the engine. Optimisation of the complete system is first conducted, aimed at identifying operating conditions for which the power output is maximised. Then, hourly dynamic simulations of the optimised system configurations are performed to complete the system sizing. Results are presented of: (i) dynamic 3-D simulations of the solar collectors together with a thermal energy storage tank, and (ii) of an optimisation analysis to identify the most suitable working fluids for the ORC engine, in which the configuration and operational constraints of the collector array are considered. The best performing working fluids (R245fa and R1233zd) are then chosen for a whole-system annual simulation in a southern European climate. The system configuration combining an evacuated-tube collector array and an ORC engine is found to be best-suited for electricity prioritisation, delivering an electrical output of 3,605¿kWh/year from a 60¿m2 collector array. In addition, the system supplies 13,175¿kWh/year in the form of domestic hot water, which is equivalent to more than 6 times the average annual household demand. A brief cost analysis and comparison with photovoltaic (PV) systems is also performed, where despite the lower PV investment cost per kWel, the levelised energy costs of the different systems are found to be similar if the economic value of the thermal output is taken into account. Finally, a discussion of the modelled solar-CHP systems results shows how these could be used for real applications and extended to other locationsPeer ReviewedPostprint (updated version

The EU food regulatory policy making: Indirect effects on the food chain governance

    Get PDF
The perpetual expansion of the EU regulatory policy making, especially in the late 1980s, created new demands regarding the governance of these policies within the EU but also at the global level. This paper examines the specific case of the EU food chain regulatory framework and investigates its implications on the food chain governance. It specifically examines how the EU food chain regulatory framework emerged with the scope to ensure higher quality, healthy and safe food along with promoting innovation and the use of modern technologies which is also part of the Commission's "Better regulation‟ agenda. Based on the regulatory governance theories, the analysis reveals that the regulating of the food chain has a two fold effect on the modes of governance and organisation in the sector at the global level. Firstly, regulating the EU food chain (process and content - requirements and levels of application) directly determines the standards and the levels in the sector that they have to comply with or "what‟ (is regulated) and "who‟ (is regulated); and secondly the politics involved in regulating affects indirectly how those regulated (the "who‟) become interdependent and interconnected in new modes of governance

Europeanization and social movement mobilization during the European sovereign debt crisis:The cases of Spain and Greece

The article addresses Europeanization of social movements in the context of the European Sovereign Debt Crisis. Europeanization occurs when movements collaborate, or make horizontal communicative linkages with movements in other countries, contest authorities beyond the state, frame issues as European and claim a European identity. The article presents a theoretical framework and research design for measuring the degree of social movement Europeanization followed by results of a pilot study on mobilization in Spain and Greece during 2011. While many contentious action events studied only encompassed the domestic arena, the pilot study showed a relatively high degree of Europeanization in the Greek case, suggesting the viability of future research.

Antecedents and Consequences of Trust Development within a Network Marketing Comp

Studies within different fields indicate that the most successful social and business relationships are trustworthy, where partners willingly strengthen the ties with the other part. Trust has been also identified as the catalyst in network marketing companies of direct selling, which is predominantly based in human relationships. The present study aims to investigate trust development in terms of trust antecedents, components and consequences within the Amway Network Company in Greece. Field research was conducted by utilizing a structured questionnaire, which was developed by adopting relative constructs reported in literature. The research target sample consisted of Amway’s Independent Business Owners (IBOs). Two hundred and twenty five questionnaires were distributed during company’s big and small conferences in Greece. Moreover, an online version of the questionnaire was created and communicated to IBOs from various regions of Greece via the web, while the same link was also emailed to a small number of IBOs. The resulting sample comprised 151 correctly answered questionnaires. Principal Component Analysis was initially performed to identify latent factors within the questionnaire items measuring the trust antecedents, components and consequences, which led to alterations of the initial model. The emerged trust antecedents were named cultural similarity, privacy concerns and conflict. The trust components were named ability, integrity and goodwill, while the trust consequences were named commitment and perceived continuity. The results of the regression analyses conducted showed that cultural similarity is the most significant antecedent of trust. Moreover, goodwill was found to be the trust component that leads to higher levels of both commitment and perceived continuity.     Keywords: trust, antecedents, consequences, network company, Greec

Post-Operative Pain Following Non-Surgical and Surgical Periodontal Procedures

Post-operative sensitivity may occur following restorative procedures including periodontal therapy affecting both the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and can have a major effect on the quality of life (QoL) of the individual. Ideally, the clinician needs to prevent or minimise these effects to reduce any unnecessary discomfort for the patient and this may be accomplished through preventive strategies, the provision of the required information about the procedures both pre- and post-treatment as well as reassuring the patient in the event of any subsequent discomfort. Furthermore, it is important for the clinician to be able to correctly diagnose the exact cause of the patient’s discomfort and have the confidence to successfully manage the problem. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview on the management and treatment of post-operative sensitivity following both non-surgical and surgical periodontal procedures and will be primarily concerned about the discomfort associated with dentine hypersensitivity/root sensitivity following these procedures
