Comparison of polynomial approximations and artificial neural nets for response surfaces in engineering optimization
Engineering optimization problems involve minimizing some function subject to constraints. In areas such as aircraft optimization, the constraint equations may be from numerous disciplines such as transfer of information between these disciplines and the optimization algorithm. They are also suited to problems which may require numerous re-optimizations such as in multi-objective function optimization or to problems where the design space contains numerous local minima, thus requiring repeated optimizations from different initial designs. Their use has been limited, however, by the fact that development of response surfaces randomly selected or preselected points in the design space. Thus, they have been thought to be inefficient compared to algorithms to the optimum solution. A development has taken place in the last several years which may effect the desirability of using response surfaces. It may be possible that artificial neural nets are more efficient in developing response surfaces than polynomial approximations which have been used in the past. Matching service development to mental health needs: a case study of a rural county
The development of Somerset's mental health services from 1991 to 1996 involved the closure of the county's last long-stay hospital, and its replacement by more local in-patient provision and an expansion of community services. The process and outcome of this change is examined, drawing upon (a) an externally-commissioned evaluation in 1994-6 and (b) a comprehensive mental health needs assessment in 1996. The findings from these studies indicate that the development of accommodation for people with severe and long-term mental health problems has been dominated by the needs of long-stay residents in the old institutions. This led initially to geographical inequities and a shortage of supported accommodation for others with severe and enduring mental health problems. However, developments during this period also suggest a local capacity to detect and respond to unmet needs in this group
Interpreting PE teachersâ personal theories of learning using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA): A case study in a nonselective school in the South East of England
Background:
Given that teachers raison dâetre is to help their students learn, it might to be assumed that their theories about humans learn would be well researched. However, other than (Tann, 1993; Senden and Roberts, 1998 and Tsai, 2002) who studied student teachers, there has been very little empirical research into how teachers theorise learning.
Methodology:
This research employed an approach based in interpretivist phenomenology.Understanding is gained through the researcherâs involvement with the research process and the
research is phenomenological as it represents the participantsâ consciousness and interpretive
because the analysis depends on the researcherâs perspective. The data was generated through theuse of three interviews with each participant.
Research site and Participants:
The research took place at âNorthviewâ Academy which is a nonselective secondary school in the South East of England consisting of approximately 1000 pupils from the ages of 11â19. The participants were four teachers (two male and two female) who were all members of the Physical Education (PE) department and had been teaching at the school for at least
three years.
Findings: The participating teachers in this study did not have a strong discourse of learning to draw upon. Their theories learning existed principally as implicit theories and exhibited considerable nuance. Teaching was sometimes described in terms of developing competence but also, implicitly, they spoke in terms of competence being revealed. There was an assumption that learning was subject to
âdiscursive consciousnessâ, suggesting that notions of tacit knowledge were less prominent in their consciousness. âProgressâ formed a significant part of the participantsâ discourse but often, it was described as a matter of value in its own right rather than making progress âinâ learning something in physical education. Injection of clarity needed?
The legal status of children who stay in hospital for three months or longer gives rise to considerable confusion among managers in social services and social work departments. And the number of young people affected is significant. NHS statistics for the year ending 31 March 2000 suggest that in England around 2,800 children aged 0-19 on admission were discharged after spending more than two months in hospital, as were more than 500 children in Scotland. (A small number of these would have been discharged as adults.) A two-year study, commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation1 and carried out by the universities of Stirling, Durham, Newcastle and York, investigated the numbers, characteristics and circumstances of children and young people with complex needs who spend long periods in health care settings. Interviews were conducted in England and Scotland with 11 social services or health managers responsible for these children. The findings show a worrying degree of uncertainty about the position of young people who find themselves in a hospital or other health care setting for at least three months. One social services manager believed such children become looked after under the terms of the Children Act 1989. Another said children are not formally looked after but nevertheless receive the same services and safeguards as those who are. One Scottish social work manager did not know whether children going into health care settings for short-term (respite) care are looked after or not. And discussion with the research team's advisory group indicated that the confusion is not confined to our fieldwork areas
High-order cyclo-difference techniques: An alternative to finite differences
The summation-by-parts energy norm is used to establish a new class of high-order finite-difference techniques referred to here as 'cyclo-difference' techniques. These techniques are constructed cyclically from stable subelements, and require no numerical boundary conditions; when coupled with the simultaneous approximation term (SAT) boundary treatment, they are time asymptotically stable for an arbitrary hyperbolic system. These techniques are similar to spectral element techniques and are ideally suited for parallel implementation, but do not require special collocation points or orthogonal basis functions. The principal focus is on methods of sixth-order formal accuracy or less; however, these methods could be extended in principle to any arbitrary order of accuracy
The influence of normal stress and sliding velocity on the frictional behaviour of calcite at room temperature. Insights from laboratory experiments and microstructural observations
The presence of calcite in and near faults, as the dominant material, cement, or vein fill,
indicates that the mechanical behaviour of carbonate-dominated material likely plays an important role in shallow- and mid-crustal faulting. To better understand the behaviour of calcite,
under loading conditions relevant to earthquake nucleation, we sheared powdered gouge of
Carrara Marble, >98 per cent CaCO3, at constant normal stresses between 1 and 100 MPa
under water-saturated conditions at room temperature. We performed slide-hold-slide tests,
1â3000 s, to measure the amount of static frictional strengthening and creep relaxation, and
velocity-stepping tests, 0.1â1000 ”m sâ1, to evaluate frictional stability. We observe that the
rates of frictional strengthening and creep relaxation decrease with increasing normal stress
and diverge as shear velocity is increased from 1 to 3000 ”m sâ1 during slide-hold-slide experiments. We also observe complex frictional stability behaviour that depends on both normal
stress and shearing velocity. At normal stresses less than 20 MPa, we observe predominantly
velocity-neutral friction behaviour. Above 20 MPa, we observe strong velocity-strengthening
frictional behaviour at low velocities, which then evolves towards velocity-weakening friction
behaviour at high velocities. Microstructural analyses of recovered samples highlight a variety
of deformation mechanisms including grain size reduction and localization, folding of calcite grains and fluid-assisted diffusion mass transfer processes promoting the development of
calcite nanograins in the highly deformed portions of the experimental fault. Our combined
analyses indicate that calcite fault gouge transitions from brittle to semi-brittle behaviour at
high normal stress and slow sliding velocities. This transition has important implications for
earthquake nucleation and propagation on faults in carbonate-dominated lithologies

Maximum stellar mass versus cluster membership number revisited
We have made a new compilation of observations of maximum stellar mass versus
cluster membership number from the literature, which we analyse for consistency
with the predictions of a simple random drawing hypothesis for stellar mass
selection in clusters. Previously, Weidner and Kroupa have suggested that the
maximum stellar mass is lower, in low mass clusters, than would be expected on
the basis of random drawing, and have pointed out that this could have
important implications for steepening the integrated initial mass function of
the Galaxy (the IGIMF) at high masses. Our compilation demonstrates how the
observed distribution in the plane of maximum stellar mass versus membership
number is affected by the method of target selection; in particular, rather low
n clusters with large maximum stellar masses are abundant in observational
datasets that specifically seek clusters in the environs of high mass stars.
Although we do not consider our compilation to be either complete or unbiased,
we discuss the method by which such data should be statistically analysed. Our
very provisional conclusion is that the data is not indicating any striking
