Advanced superposition methods for high speed turbopump vibration analysis
The small, high pressure Mark 48 liquid hydrogen turbopump was analyzed and dynamically tested to determine the cause of high speed vibration at an operating speed of 92,400 rpm. This approaches the design point operating speed of 95,000 rpm. The initial dynamic analysis in the design stage and subsequent further analysis of the rotor only dynamics failed to predict the vibration characteristics found during testing. An advanced procedure for dynamics analysis was used in this investigation. The procedure involves developing accurate dynamic models of the rotor assembly and casing assembly by finite element analysis. The dynamically instrumented assemblies are independently rap tested to verify the analytical models. The verified models are then combined by modal superposition techniques to develop a completed turbopump model where dynamic characteristics are determined. The results of the dynamic testing and analysis obtained are presented and methods of moving the high speed vibration characteristics to speeds above the operating range are recommended. Recommendations for use of these advanced dynamic analysis procedures during initial design phases are given
Recalcitrant Intervention
Between 1945 and 1965 Walker Evans was employed by Time Inc. to work for Fortune, the American business and industry magazine. He advised on its photographic direction and produced his own photo-essays, often setting his own assignments, shooting, editing, designing, and writing too. Evansâs complex politics and artistic temperament were at odds with American magazine culture. Many of his photo-essays resisted Fortuneâs preference for business, industry, and modern capitalist progress. Instead he celebrated the outmoded, the disappearing, and the overlooked. His layouts and texts often faced the viewer with the ambiguities of photographs as documents. As well as shooting his own projects he worked with archival and vernacular images such as popular postcards. This essay explores three of Evansâs pieces for Fortune: âLabor Anonymousâ (1946), âMain Street Looking North from Courthouse Squareâ (1948) and âHomes for Americansâ (1946). As Evansâs âmuseumâ reputation grew in the 1960s and 1970s, his magazine work was forgotten or dismissed as compromised commercialism. The author revisits those pages to show just how seriously Evans took them
An Essay on Dorothea Langeâs âMigrant Motherâ
In this essay on Dorothea Langeâs well-known image, written for âThe Politics of Seeingâ, David Campany reflects upon the politics of imagery and its iconic status, arguing that the more they are seen, the more they are seen; and the more they circulate, the more they circulate â but the less they are understood. More often than not, photographs become iconic when they become default substitutes for the complexities of the history, people or circumstances they could never fully articulate but to which they remain connected, however tentatively
An Analysis of Extraction Efficiencies of Various Swabs on Sperm Recovery
With advancements in the DNA technology and methodology, more complete DNA profiles can be obtained. Extraction procedures and their reagents have been optimized for maximal DNA yield, but the cotton swab used and provided for sexual assault examinations has not advanced. Despite research suggesting the cotton swabâs absorbent nature and its inclination to retain cellular material, the field of forensic nursing has not yet implemented another swab.
Three swabs that this research will be evaluating are nylon flocked swabs, cotton swabs, and the cytobrush swab. The nylon flocked and cotton swabs have been studied for their efficiency, but no studies have evaluated the cytobrush for forensic evidence collection.
Sample preparation consisted of individually submerging three different swabs in microcentrifuge tubes containing 50 ”L of a 1:250 seminal fluid dilution. These mock sexual assault samples were carried through DNA processing methods to analyze what swab yielded the highest sperm DNA concentration and best genetic profile. It was hypothesized that the nylon flocked and cytobrush swabs would be more efficient than the cotton swab for sperm recovery, and the cytobrush swab would be the most efficient for sperm recovery.
The results showed that the nylon flocked and cytobrush swabs had five out of twelve samples with higher and significantly different DNA concentrations than the concentrations from the cotton swab. The results also suggest that the structure of the swab effects the overall efficiency for sperm elution. Also, the swab type did not have an effect on the quality of the electropherogram
Sustainable agriculture and the Red Stick Farmers\u27 Market: an exploration of the use of concept in design
This is a treatise on an attempt to translate a concept -- the driving principle of a design in the parlance of the design studios at the Louisiana State University School of Landscape Architecture -- into practice, form and function. If form follows function, as states the oft quoted proverb of design credited to Louis Sullivan, then perhaps as much attention should be given to the design of the function as the form. What this treatise will demonstrate is that function designed around a concept can result in physical manifestations, or forms, of that concept. In this case a concept was applied to a community development project. The project in turn created physical manifestations of the concept. The focus of this work is on a project begun in 1996 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The concept underlying the Baton Rouge project was to use active stewardship of the land and its people as a means of promoting economic and community development. This concept was put into practice through the creation of the Baton Rouge Economic and Agricultural Development Alliance, or BREADA, the function of which is to foster stewardship of land and community. Among the most evident forms borne of the concept and BREADA are the Red Stick Farmers\u27 Market, the community garden project, and the recently-created Main Street Market in downtown Baton Rouge. Examination of the Baton Rouge project lead to a second premise. The concept that drives the design of the function and form can also guide the creation of the conditions necessary to produce the desired function and form. This includes such seemingly mundane aspects of a project\u27s creation as how it is organized, funded, administered, evaluated, and staffed
Investigation Of Sex Differences Between Withings Body Cardio And SphygmoCor Applanation Technology
Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a widely utilized measure of cardiovascular health as a reflection of arterial stiffness. There is an emerging technology revolution to assess health with mobile monitors. The Nokia Health platform includes the Body Cardio scale that is designed to bring this diagnostic tool into homes. The scale detects pulse transit times via a proprietary algorithm, yet males and females differ in regional distribution of body mass. However, no device has been tested against laboratory gold standards and sex differences have never been elucidated. The purpose of our study was to validate the Body Cardio scale for analysis of PWV compared to laboratory gold standards (SphygmoCor, AtCor Medical). We hypothesized that the mobile version would give greater variability, lending to increased error. METHODS: 20 normotensive, college-aged individuals utilized the Body Cardio scale in a laboratory to obtain PWV measurements, each followed by standing PWV measurements with SphygmoCor. RESULTS: Nokia underestimated PWV in males by 0.703 and 0.653 in females; this is a statistically insignificant value. CONCLUSION: The ability of the Nokia Body Cardio to measure PWV at home lends great healthcare significance and can lead to a wider scope of information for an individualâs physician
A Phenomenological Study of High School Biology Teachersâ Perceptions of the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards in an Era of High-Stakes Testing
This qualitative study investigated four career status, four initially licensed, and four lateral entry high school Biology teachersâ perceptions of the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standardsâ (NCPTS) usefulness in preparing them to be exemplary science teachers. These teachers are among the first group of teachers to use the NCPTS for professional growth and be evaluated with the Teachers Evaluation Process (TEP). Several historical documents including National Science Education Standards, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and How People Learn, along with NSTAâs Search for Excellence in Science Teaching identify the characteristics of exemplary science teaching. These best practices are reflected in the NCPTS. Individual and cross case analysis found four themes of high-stakes testing, time, technology, and Teacher Evaluation Process that have an impact on these teachers. The results indicated there is an inconsistent distribution of technological resources, lack of funding for lab equipment and supplies, lack of time for inquiry, and lack of time to find and use resources. Teachers feel the additional stress for unprepared and unmotivated learners, a rigorous curriculum, and more accountability for student performance. Implications of this research include: Administrators need to spend more time with initially licensed and lateral entry teachers to help them understand how to improve their practice. There is a need for additional professional development for teachers to understand how to use the NCPTS to improve teaching and learning
