    [EN] Digital technologies are now mature for producing high quality digital replicas of Cultural Heritage (CH) assets. The research results produced in the last decade ignitedan impressive evolution and consolidation of the technologies for acquiring high-quality digital three-dimensional (3D)models, encompassing both geometry and color. What remains still an open problem is how to deliver those data and related knowledge to our society. The web is nowadays the main channel for the dissemination of knowledge. Emerging commercial solutions for web-publishing of 3D data are consolidating and becoming a de-facto standard for many applications(e-commerce, industrial products, education, etc.).In this framework, CH is a very specific domain, requiring highly flexible solutions. Some recent experiences arepresented, aimed at providing a support to the archival of archaeological3Ddata, supporting web-based publishing of very high-resolution digitization results and finally enabling the documentation of complex restoration actions. All those examples have been recently implemented on the open-source 3D Heritage Online Presenter (3DHOP)platform, developed at CNR-ISTI[ES] Las tecnologías digitales estánahora maduraspara producir réplicas digitales de alta calidad de valores activos del patrimonio cultural (CH). La web es hoy en día el principal canal utilizado para divulgarel conocimiento. Las soluciones comerciales nuevas relacionadas con la publicación en la red de datos en 3D se están consolidando y convirtiendo en un estándar de facto para muchas aplicaciones(comercio electrónico, productos industriales, educación, etc.).     Marching Intersections: An Efficient Approach to Shape-from-Silhouette

    A new shape-from-silhouette algorithm for the creation of 3D digital models is presented. The algorithm is based on the use of the Marching Intersection (MI) data structure, a volumetric scheme which allows ef\ufb01cient representation of 3D polyhedra and reduces the boolean operations between them to simple boolean operations on linear intervals. MI supports the de\ufb01nition of a direct shape-from-silhouette approach: the 3D conoids built from the silhouettes extracted from the images of the object are directly intersected to form the resulting 3D digital model. Compared to existing methods, our approach allows high quality models to be obtained in an ef\ufb01cient way. Examples on synthetic objects together with quantitative and qualitative evaluations are given

    3DHOP (3D Heritage Online Presenter) is an innovative technological solution for the advanced presentation of high-resolution 3D content on the Web. The design of this tool has been focused towards the Cultural Heritage (CH) field, even though its versatility makes it a general-purpose instrument. 3DHOP is particularly suitable for the online presentation of CH artifacts due to its main features: the capability to efficiently stream high-resolution 3D models (as the ones coming from 3D scanning which are usually employed in CH); the possibility to build integrated presentations schemes by interconnecting the viewer to the rest of web pages elements; and, finally, the ready-to-use templates and examples of configuration focused towards CH applications. In its design and development, we put particular attention on three factors: easiness of use, smooth learning curve and performances. 3DHOP is written in JavaScript and it uses the WebGL subset of HTML5 for efficient rendering. Thanks to its modular nature, and a declarative-like setup, it is easy to learn and may be configured and customized at different levels, making it accessible for people without skilled knowledge in Computer Graphics (CG) programming. In this paper we present capabilities and characteristics of the third release of this tool, using some examples based on real-world projects

    Developing the ArchAIDE Application: A digital workflow for identifying, organising and sharing archaeological pottery using automated image recognition

    Pottery is of fundamental importance for understanding archaeological contexts, facilitating the understanding of production, trade flows, and social interactions. Pottery characterisation and the classification of ceramics is still a manual process, reliant on analogue catalogues created by specialists, held in archives and libraries. The ArchAIDE project worked to streamline, optimise and economise the mundane aspects of these processes, using the latest automatic image recognition technology, while retaining key decision points necessary to create trusted results. Specifically, ArchAIDE worked to support classification and interpretation work (during both fieldwork and post-excavation analysis) with an innovative app for tablets and smartphones. This article summarises the work of this three-year project, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement N.693548, with a consortium of partners representing both the academic and industry-led ICT (Information and Communications Technology) domains, and the academic and development-led archaeology domains. The collaborative work of the archaeological and technical partners created a pipeline where potsherds are photographed, their characteristics compared against a trained neural network, and the results returned with suggested matches from a comparative collection with typical pottery types and characteristics. Once the correct type is identified, all relevant information for that type is linked to the new sherd and stored within a database that can be shared online. ArchAIDE integrated a variety of novel and best-practice approaches, both in the creation of the app, and the communication of the project to a range of stakeholders

    3D recording and visualization is standard practice at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at LU. This approach is currently used within several field projects to support documentation, data management and data analysis. The 3D data collected in the field are archived in the faculty server and are made available to researchers and students through the Lund University Digital Archaeology Laboratory DARKLab website (www.darklab.lu.se).The Interactive Reporting System for the Kämpinge Project was recently published online as a part of Paola Derudas' PhD project "Documenting, Interpreting, Publishing, Re-using". The main goal of this project is investigating new forms of archaeological reports. The system includes data collected across four years of investigation, and it has been customized to support field investigation in Sweden. The Interactive Reporting System created for the Kämpinge Project will serve as a model for publishing several ongoing field investigations projects, currently under development at the Lund University Digital Archaeology Lab -DARKLab

    Sharing archaeological knowledge : The Interactive Reporting System

    This study describes the development of a digital reporting system designed to provide archaeologists with a dynamic and interactive 3D web platform that can be used for describing in great detail records and activities undertaken across a multi-year field investigation campaign. The system was used to compose the archaeological report of a multi-year investigation and employed during the pandemic crisis for supporting digital courses in archaeological practice; the paper also reports the preliminary results of the use of this platform within teaching activities. Unlike other web solutions, this system supports an assisted publication of archaeological contents that integrates a 3D visualization system in the reporting process, exploiting the communicative potentials of 3D models and the web.
