    The Archimedean Projection Property

    Let H be a hypersurface in Rn and let π be an orthogonal projection in Rn restricted to H. We say that H satisfies the Archimedean projection property corresponding to π if there exists a constant C such that Vol(π−1(U)) = C ・ Vol(U) for every measurable U in the range of π. It is well-known that the (n − 1) dimensional sphere, as a hypersurface in Rn, satisfies the Archimedean projection property corresponding to any codimension 2 orthogonal projection in Rn, the range of any such projection being an (n − 2)-dimensional ball. Here we construct new hypersurfaces that satisfy Archimedean projection properties. Our construction works for any projection codimension k, 2 ≤ k ≤ n − 1, and it allows us to specify a wide variety of desired projection ranges n−k ⊂ Rn−k. Letting n−k be an (n −k)-dimensional ball for each k, it produces a new family of smooth, compact hypersurfaces in Rn satisfying codimension k Archimedean projection properties that includes, in the special case k = 2, the (n − 1)-dimensional spheres

    Mutational analysis of Escherichia coli GreA protein reveals new functional activity independent of antipause and lethal when overexpressed

    There is a growing appreciation for the diverse regulatory consequences of the family of proteins that bind to the secondary channel of E. coli RNA polymerase (RNAP), such as GreA, GreB or DksA. Similar binding sites could suggest a competition between them. GreA is characterised to rescue stalled RNAP complexes due to its antipause activity, but also it is involved in transcription fidelity and proofreading. Here, overexpression of GreA is noted to be lethal independent of its antipause activity. A library of random GreA variants has been used to isolate lethality suppressors to assess important residues for GreA functionality and its interaction with the RNA polymerase. Some mutant defects are inferred to be associated with altered binding competition with DksA, while other variants seem to have antipause activity defects that cannot reverse a GreA-sensitive pause site in a fliC::lacZ reporter system. Surprisingly, apparent binding and cleavage defects are found scattered throughout both the coiled-coil and globular domains. Thus, the coiled-coil of GreA is not just a measuring stick ensuring placement of acidic residues precisely at the catalytic centre but also seems to have binding functions. These lethality suppressor mutants may provide valuable tools for future structural and functional studies

    An Interview with Alan J. Hovestadt: AAMFT Past President and Long-Time Marriage and Family Counselor Educator

    Alan J. Hovestadt, EdD, is the immediate past president of the 24,000 member American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and a long-time IAMFC member who served as an IAMFC founding board member when ACA first granted IAMFC divisional status. Recently, Dr. Hovestadt was one of seven recipients of the prestigious American Counseling Association’s Presidential Award and was honored at the 2008 ACA Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. Given Dr. Hovestadt’s prominence within both AAMFT and IAMFC and his long-time marriage and family counselor educator identity, the authors’ believed that an interview with Dr. Hovestadt would be of significant interest to The Family Journal readerships. Thus, Dr. Hovestadt graciously participated in an interview with Drs. Ken Coll, Michael Sunich, and Gerald Juhnke on November 20, 2007. In the interview below, Dr. Hovestadt responds to questions related to his (a) AAMFT Presidency experiences and accomplishments, (b) perceptions related to professionals aligning themselves either with AAMFT or IAMFC, (c) thoughts related to pressing legislative concerns that would be of specific interest to IAMFC members and The Family Journal readership, (d) perceptions related to marriage and family training changes, and (e) advice for those seeing to become counselor educators with specialization in couples, marriage, and family counseling

    Winners and Losers: Climate Change Impacts on Biodiversity in Ireland

    The climate envelope modelling described in this report represents a staged investigation into the possible impacts of climate change on the nature conservation resources of Ireland. It represents a significant piece of original research applying state-ofthe- art methods for the first time in Ireland, and is an important step in trying to understand the complex interactions between climate, climate change, and species and habitats across the island. The work is one part of the wider research programme Co-ordination, Communication and Adaptation for Climate Change in Ireland: an Integrated Approach (COCOADAPT) funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

    Generation of a Conditional Allele of the Transcription Factor Atonal Homolog 8 (Atoh8)

    Atonal Homolog 8 (Atoh8) is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor that is highly conserved across species and expressed in multiple tissues during embryogenesis. In the developing pancreas, Atoh8 is expressed in endocrine progenitors but declines in hormone-positive cells, suggesting a role during early stages of the endocrine differentiation program. We previously generated a whole-body Atoh8 knockout but early lethality of null embryos precluded assessment of Atoh8 functions during organ development. Here we report the generation of a conditional Atoh8 knockout mouse strain by insertion of two loxP sites flanking exon 1 of the Atoh8 gene. Pancreas-specific Atoh8 knockout (Atoh8 Δpanc) mice were obtained by mating this strain with a Pdx1-Cre transgenic line. Atoh8 Δpanc mice were born at the expected mendelian ratio and showed normal appearance and fertility. Pancreas weight and gross pancreatic morphology were normal. All pancreatic cell lineages were present, although endocrine δ (somatostatin) cells were modestly augmented in Atoh8 Δpanc as compared to control neonates. This increase did not affect whole-body glucose tolerance in adult knockout animals. Gene expression analysis in embryonic pancreases at the time of the major endocrine differentiation wave revealed modest alterations in several early endocrine differentiation markers. Together, these data argue that Atoh8 modulates activation of the endocrine program but it is not essential for pancreas formation or endocrine differentiation in the mouse. Given the ubiquitous expression pattern of Atoh8, the availability of a mouse strain carrying a conditional allele for this gene warrants further studies using temporally regulated Cre transgenic lines to elucidate time or cell-autonomous functions of Atoh8 during development and in the adult

    Prototyping and Evaluation of Infrastructure-assisted Transition of Control for Cooperative Automated Vehicles

    Automated driving is now possible in diverse road and traffic conditions. However, there are still situations that automated vehicles cannot handle safely and efficiently. In this case, a Transition of Control (ToC) is necessary so that the driver takes control of the driving. Executing a ToC requires the driver to get full situation awareness of the driving environment. If the driver fails to get back the control in a limited time, a Minimum Risk Maneuver (MRM) is executed to bring the vehicle into a safe state (e.g., decelerating to full stop). The execution of ToCs requires some time and can cause traffic disruption and safety risks that increase if several vehicles execute ToCs/MRMs at similar times and in the same area. This study proposes to use novel C-ITS traffic management measures where the infrastructure exploits V2X communications to assist Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in the execution of ToCs. The infrastructure can suggest a spatial distribution of ToCs, and inform vehicles of the locations where they could execute a safe stop in case of MRM. This paper reports the first field operational tests that validate the feasibility and quantify the benefits of the proposed infrastructure-assisted ToC and MRM management. The paper also presents the CAV and roadside infrastructure prototypes implemented and used in the trials. The conducted field trials demonstrate that infrastructure-assisted traffic management solutions can reduce safety risks and traffic disruption

    This article explores the documentation of trans activism in France and Spain since the 2000s. The first part addresses questions surrounding the place of affect and narrative in documentary film, particularly in relation to trans issues. The second part o f the article analyses an audience case study from a screening at the International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in Barcelona of Valérie Mitteaux's Girl or Boy, My Sex is not my Gender (2011), considering how different viewers respond to the representatio n of trans identities. The article builds on qualitative research whilst extending the exploration of sexuality and gender in previous audience studies to a consideration of documentary film, seeking to provide a more nuanced understanding of what audience claims for identification in politicised contexts mean

    BAAD: a Biomass And Allometry Database for woody plants

    Understanding how plants are constructed—i.e., how key size dimensions and the amount of mass invested in different tissues varies among individuals—is essential for modeling plant growth, carbon stocks, and energy fluxes in the terrestrial biosphere. Allocation patterns can differ through ontogeny, but also among coexisting species and among species adapted to different environments. While a variety of models dealing with biomass allocation exist, we lack a synthetic understanding of the underlying processes. This is partly due to the lack of suitable data sets for validating and parameterizing models. To that end, we present the Biomass And Allometry Database (BAAD) for woody plants. The BAAD contains 259 634 measurements collected in 176 different studies, from 21 084 individuals across 678 species. Most of these data come from existing publications. However, raw data were rarely made public at the time of publication. Thus, the BAAD contains data from different studies, transformed into standard units and variable names. The transformations were achieved using a common workflow for all raw data files. Other features that distinguish the BAAD are: (i) measurements were for individual plants rather than stand averages; (ii) individuals spanning a range of sizes were measured; (iii) plants from 0.01–100 m in height were included; and (iv) biomass was estimated directly, i.e., not indirectly via allometric equations (except in very large trees where biomass was estimated from detailed sub‐sampling). We included both wild and artificially grown plants. The data set contains the following size metrics: total leaf area; area of stem cross‐section including sapwood, heartwood, and bark; height of plant and crown base, crown area, and surface area; and the dry mass of leaf, stem, branches, sapwood, heartwood, bark, coarse roots, and fine root tissues. We also report other properties of individuals (age, leaf size, leaf mass per area, wood density, nitrogen content of leaves and wood), as well as information about the growing environment (location, light, experimental treatment, vegetation type) where available. It is our hope that making these data available will improve our ability to understand plant growth, ecosystem dynamics, and carbon cycling in the world\u27s vegetation
