Electrically driven magnetism on a Pd thin film
Using first-principles density functional calculations we demonstrate that
ferromagnetism can be induced and modulated on an otherwise paramagnetic Pd
metal thin-film surface through application of an external electric field. As
free charges are either accumulated or depleted at the Pd surface to screen the
applied electric field there is a corresponding change in the surface density
of states. This change can be made sufficient for the Fermi-level density of
states to satisfy the Stoner criterion, driving a transition locally at the
surface from a paramagnetic state to an itinerant ferromagnetic state above a
critical applied electric field, Ec. Furthermore, due to the second-order
nature of this transition, the surface magnetization of the ferromagnetic state
just above the transition exhibits a substantial dependence on electric field,
as the result of an enhanced magnetoelectric susceptibility. Using a linearized
Stoner model we explain the occurrence of the itinerant ferromagnetism and
demonstrate that the magnetic moment on the Pd surface follows a square-root
variation with electric field consistent with our first-principles
calculations.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Mapping warm molecular hydrogen with Spitzer's Infrared Array Camera (IRAC)
Photometric maps, obtained with Spitzer's Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), can
provide a valuable probe of warm molecular hydrogen within the interstellar
medium. IRAC maps of the supernova remnant IC443, extracted from the Spitzer
archive, are strikingly similar to spectral line maps of the H2 pure rotational
transitions that we obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) instrument on
Spitzer. IRS spectroscopy indicates that IRAC Bands 3 and 4 are indeed
dominated by the H2 v=0-0 S(5) and S(7) transitions, respectively. Modeling of
the H2 excitation suggests that Bands 1 and 2 are dominated by H2 v=1-0 O(5)
and v=0-0 S(9). Large maps of the H2 emission in IC433, obtained with IRAC,
show band ratios that are inconsistent with the presence of gas at a single
temperature. The relative strengths of IRAC Bands 2, 3, and 4 are consistent
with pure H2 emission from shocked material with a power-law distribution of
gas temperatures. CO vibrational emissions do not contribute significantly to
the observed Band 2 intensity. Assuming that the column density of H2 at
temperatures T to T+dT is proportional to T raised to the power -b for
temperatures up to 4000 K, we obtained a typical estimate of 4.5 for b. The
power-law index, b, shows variations over the range 3 to 6 within the set of
different sight-lines probed by the maps, with the majority of sight-lines
showing b in the range 4 to 5. The observed power-law index is consistent with
the predictions of simple models for paraboloidal bow shocks.Comment: 27 pages, including 11 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
A kinetic model of radiating electrons
A kinetic theory is developed to describe radiating electrons whose motion is governed by the Lorentz-Dirac equation. This gives rise to a generalized Vlasov equation coupled to an equation for the evolution of the physical submanifold of phase space. The pathological solutions of the 1-particle theory may be removed by expanding the latter equation in powers of τ ≔ q 2/6πm. The radiation-induced change in entropy is explored and its physical origin is discussed. As a simple demonstration of the theory, the radiative damping rate of longitudinal plasma waves is calculated
Willingness to Pay for Emission Reductions with E85
This study examines consumers' WTP for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from E85 as opposed to gasoline. Data were collected via a contingent choice exercise in a 2009 national online survey. As part of the fuel choice exercise, several fuel attributes were allowed to vary including emission reductions, import level, proximity of fuel availability, price, and fuel blend (E85 or regular gasoline). A random parameters model with demographics and attitudes interacted with emission reductions was estimated. The resulting estimates suggest that, overall the WTP for an emission reduction is not statistically significant. However, for some demographic and attitudinal profiles, the WTP is significant. An example profile includes younger age, female, concerned about climate change, not supportive of additional drilling, supportive of farmland being used for fuel, own or are likely to own a FlexFuel vehicle, and primary vehicle not an SUV.Willingness to Pay, Emission Reductions, E85, Consumer/Household Economics, Environmental Economics and Policy, Q41, Q51,

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Hydrogen Emission in Four Reflection Nebulae: NGC 1333, NGC 2023, NGC 2068, and NGC 7023
We present near-infrared spectroscopy of fluorescent molecular hydrogen (H_2)
emission from NGC 1333, NGC 2023, NGC 2068, and NGC 7023 and derive the
physical properties of the molecular material in these reflection nebulae. Our
observations of NGC 2023 and NGC 7023 and the physical parameters we derive for
these nebulae are in good agreement with previous studies. Both NGC 1333 and
NGC 2068 have no previously-published analysis of near-infrared spectra. Our
study reveals that the rotational-vibrational states of molecular hydrogen in
NGC 1333 are populated quite differently from NGC 2023 and NGC 7023. We
determine that the relatively weak UV field illuminating NGC 1333 is the
primary cause of the difference. Further, we find that the density of the
emitting material in NGC 1333 is of much lower density, with n ~ 10^2 - 10^4
cm^-3. NGC 2068 has molecular hydrogen line ratios more similar to those of NGC
7023 and NGC 2023. Our model fits to this nebula show that the bright,
H_2-emitting material may have a density as high as n ~ 10^5 cm^-3, similar to
what we find for NGC 2023 and NGC 7023. Our spectra of NGC 2023 and NGC 7023
show significant changes in both the near-infrared continuum and H_2 intensity
along the slit and offsets between the peaks of the H_2 and continuum emission.
We find that these brightness changes may correspond to real changes in the
density and temperatures of the emitting region, although uncertainties in the
total column of emitting material along a given line of sight complicates the
interpretation. The spatial difference in the peak of the H_2 and near-infrared
continuum peaks in NGC 2023 and NGC 7023 shows that the near-infrared continuum
is due to a material which can survive closer to the star than H_2 can.Comment: Submitted for publication in ApJ. 34 pages including 12 embedded

Investigation of a pulsed electrothermal thruster system
The performance of an ablative wall Pulsed Electrothermal (PET) thruster is accurately characterized on a calibrated thrust stand, using polyethylene propellant. The thruster is tested for four configurations of capillary length and pulse length. The exhaust velocity is determined with twin time-of-flight photodiode stagnation probes, and the ablated mass is measured from the loss over ten shots. Based on the measured thrust impulse and the ablated mass, the specific impulse varies from 1000 to 1750 seconds. The thrust to power varies from .05 N/kW (quasi-steady mode) to .10 N/kW (unsteady mode). The thruster efficiency varies from .56 at 1000 seconds to .42 at 1750 seconds. A conceptual design is presented for a 40 kW PET propulsion system. The point design system performance is .62 system efficiency at 1000 seconds specific impulse. The system's reliability is enhanced by incorporating 20, 20 kW thruster modules which are fired in pairs. The thruster design is non-ablative, and uses water propellant, from a central storage tank, injected through the cathode
Anisotropic dynamics of a vicinal surface under the meandering step instability
We investigate the nonlinear evolution of the Bales-Zangwill instability,
responsible for the meandering of atomic steps on a growing vicinal surface. We
develop an asymptotic method to derive, in the continuous limit, an evolution
equation for the two-dimensional step flow. The dynamics of the crystal surface
is greatly influenced by the anisotropy inherent to its geometry, and is
characterized by the coarsening of undulations along the step direction and by
the elastic relaxation in the mean slope direction. We demonstrate, using
similarity arguments, that the coalescence of meanders and the step flow follow
simple scaling laws, and deduce the exponents of the characteristic length
scales and height amplitude. The relevance of these results to experiments is
discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
