    A study of environmental characterization of conventional and advanced aluminum alloys for selection and design. Phase 2: The breaking load test method

    A technique is demonstrated for accelerated stress corrosion testing of high strength aluminum alloys. The method offers better precision and shorter exposure times than traditional pass fail procedures. The approach uses data from tension tests performed on replicate groups of smooth specimens after various lengths of exposure to static stress. The breaking strength measures degradation in the test specimen load carrying ability due to the environmental attack. Analysis of breaking load data by extreme value statistics enables the calculation of survival probabilities and a statistically defined threshold stress applicable to the specific test conditions. A fracture mechanics model is given which quantifies depth of attack in the stress corroded specimen by an effective flaw size calculated from the breaking stress and the material strength and fracture toughness properties. Comparisons are made with experimental results from three tempers of 7075 alloy plate tested by the breaking load method and by traditional tests of statistically loaded smooth tension bars and conventional precracked specimens

    Growth and dissection of a fold and thrust belt: the geological record of the High Agri Valley, Italy

    We present a 130 km2 wide geological map for the NE side of the fault-bounded High Agri Valley Southern Italy, that formed in the Quaternary in response to extensional tectonics dissecting the folds and thrusts of the Lucanian Apennine. To prepare the map, at 1:25,000 scale, we integrated information obtained through field surveys and the review of pre-existing geological data. Our work describes a number of significant map-scale structures, which can be related to well-constrained tectonic episodes. The new geological map provides important constraints that can be used to distinguish ancient structures from those that were active during the Quaternary, allowing a more detailed reconstruction of the processes that operate during the development of a post-orogenic trough. We expect that the new map will be used for different types of geological investigations, including studies of inversion tectonics, active tectonics, geosite mapping, 3D modelling of geological structures. © 2020, © 2020 The Author(s).     Microstructurally based model of fatigue initiation and growth

    A model to calculate fatigue life is developed based on the assumption that fatigue life is entirely composed of crack growth from an initial microstructural inhomogeneity. Specifically, growth is considered to start from either an ellipsoidal void, a cracked particle, or a debonded particle. The capability of predicting fatigue life from material microstructure is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics principles, the sizes of the crack-initiating microstructural inhomogeneities, and an initiation parameter that is proportional to the cyclic plastic zone size. A key aspect of this modeling approach is that it is linked with a general purpose probability program to analyze the effect of the distribution of controlling microstructural features within the material. This enables prediction of fatigue stress versus life curves for various specimen geometries using distributional statistics obtained from characterizations of the microstructure.     Vitamin D deficiency in myotonic dystrophy type 1

    Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystemic disorder affecting, among others, the endocrine system, with derangement of steroid hormones functions. Vitamin D is a steroid recognized for its role in calcium homeostasis. In addition, vitamin D influences muscle metabolism by genomic and non-genomic actions, including stimulation of the insulin-like-growth-factor 1 (IGF1), a major regulator of muscle trophism. To verify the presence of vitamin D deficit in DM1 and its possible consequences, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), calcium, parathormone (PTH), and IGF1 levels were measured in 32 DM1 patients and in 32 age-matched controls. Bone mineral density (BMD) and proximal muscle strength were also measured by DXA and a handheld dynamometer, respectively. In DM1 patients, 25(OH)D levels were reduced compared to controls, and a significant decrease of IGF1 was also found. 25(OH)D levels inversely correlated with CTG expansion size, while IGF1 levels and muscle strength directly correlated with levels of 25(OH)D lower than 20 and 10 ng/ml, respectively. A significantly higher percentage of DM1 patients presented hyperparathyroidism as compared to controls. Calcium levels and BMD were comparable between the two groups. Oral administration of cholecalciferol in 11 DM1 patients with severe vitamin D deficiency induced a normal increase of circulating 25(OH)D, ruling out defects in intestinal absorption or hepatic hydroxylation. DM1 patients show a reduction of circulating 25(OH)D, which correlates with genotype and may influence IGF1 levels and proximal muscle strength. Oral supplementation with vitamin D should be considered in DM1 and might mitigate muscle weakness

    The progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the nigro-striatal system is a major trait of Parkinson's disease (PD), manifesting clinically as motor and non-motor symptoms. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are alleged pathogenic mechanisms underlying aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein that in turn triggers dopaminergic neurotoxicity. Peripheral processes, including inflammation, may precede and contribute to neurodegeneration. Whether mitochondrial dyshomeostasis in the central nervous system and systemic inflammation are linked to one another in PD is presently unclear. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are delivery systems through which cells can communicate or unload noxious materials. EV trafficking also participates in mitochondrial quality control (MQC) by generating mitochondrial-derived vesicles to dispose damaged organelles. Disruption of MQC coupled with abnormal EV secretion may play a role in the pathogenesis of PD. Furthermore, due to its bacterial ancestry, circulating mitochondrial DNA can elicit an inflammatory response. Therefore, purification and characterisation of molecules packaged in, and secreted through, small EVs (sEVs)/exosomes in body fluids may provide meaningful insights into the association between mitochondrial dysfunction and systemic inflammation in PD.     Cryotolerance of equine spermatozoa correlates with specific fatty acid pattern: A pilot study

    Sperm cryopreservation represents a powerful tool for horse breeding. To improve the efficiency of artificial insemination in the horse using cryopreserved spermatozoa, an adequate understanding of the underlying biophysical properties that affect sperm cryosurvival needs to be reached yet. In this pilot study, we described isolation and analysis of the main fatty acids from sperms of stallions classified as good and poor freezers (7 GF and 5 PF, according to sperm motility and viability, before and after cryopreservation). Fatty acid profiles were only assessed in pre-thaw sperms. Eight main fatty acids were identified, using gas chromatography, and their contents were expressed as percentage of the total lipid content. We found that lauric, myristic and oleic acid (C12:0, C14:0 and C18:1n9c) turned out to be about 2-fold more abundant in the sperm cells of the GFs compared with PFs. Moreover, we described for the first time the presence of a very high amount of a trans geometrical isomer of linoleic acid, linolelaidic acid (C18:2n6t), in pre-thaw PF spermatozoa. Notably, we found in fresh sperms of PF stallions a ratio of unsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids which was twice that of those of GF group, suggesting a positive effect of a high saturated-to-unsaturated fatty acid ratio for the “freezability” of equine spermatozoa. Finally, principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed the relationships between specific fatty acids and cryotolerance of equine spermatozoa, also providing a graphical classification and additional information about the dominant variables governing the classification process

    Tetrahydro-4H-(pyrrolo[3,4-d]isoxazol-3-yl)methanamine : a bicyclic diamino scaffold stabilizing parallel turn conformations

    Tetrahydro-4H-(pyrrolo[3,4-d]isoxazol-3-yl)methanamine scaffold was designed as diamino derivative to stabilize parallel turn conformations. Its synthesis took advantage of a [1,3]-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between the nitrile oxide derived from the inexpensive enantiopure L-phenylalanine, and N-benzyl-3-pyrroline. Two diastereoisomers were formed whose distribution depends on the selected base. 3aR,6aS-Isomer is favoured in organic bases which formation is driven by pi-interactions. On the other hand, the above interactions were significantly prevented using an inorganic base due to the chaotropic effect of the cation, decreasing the amount of the above isomer. Finally, we demonstrated that this isomer is able of stabilizing parallel turn conformations when inserted in short peptide sequences

    A New Limit on the Neutrinoless DBD of 130Te

    We report the present results of CUORICINO a cryogenic experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) of 130Te consisting of an array of 62 crystals of TeO2 with a total active mass of 40.7 kg. The array is framed inside of a dilution refrigerator, heavily shielded against environmental radioactivity and high-energy neutrons, and operated at a temperature of ~8 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Temperature pulses induced by particle interacting in the crystals are recorded and measured by means of Neutron Transmutation Doped thermistors. The gain of each bolometer is stabilized with voltage pulses developed by a high stability pulse generator across heater resistors put in thermal contact with the absorber. The calibration is performed by means of two thoriated wires routinely inserted in the set-up. No evidence for a peak indicating neutrinoless DBD of 130Te is detected and a 90% C.L. lower limit of 1.8E24 years is set for the lifetime of this process. Taking largely into account the uncertainties in the theoretical values of nuclear matrix elements, this implies an upper boud on the effective mass of the electron neutrino ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 eV. This sensitivity is similar to those of the 76Ge experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Quantum skyrmions and the destruction of long-range antiferromagnetic order in the high-Tc superconductors La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x)

    We study the destruction of the antiferromagnetic order in the high-Tc superconductors La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) and YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) in the framework of the CP1-nonlinear sigma model formulation of the 2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The dopants are introduced as independent fermions with appropriate dispersion relations determined by the shape of the Fermi surface. The energy of skyrmion topological defects, which are shown to be introduced by doping, is used as an order parameter for antiferromagnetic order. We obtain analytic expressions for this as a function of doping which allow us to plot the curves T_N(x_c)\times x_c and M(x)\times x, for both YBCO and LSCO, in good quantitative agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, 5 embeeded figure
