Abstract : This Master's thesis analyzes the process of military recruitment for the War of the Triple Alliance in the province of Paraná, Brazil. It is based on a wide range of historical sources: news on the recruitment and thewar in the press, correspondence sent by local authorities and private individuals to the president of the province, reports presented by the president to the provincial assembly, ministerial reports (Navy and Warministries), and works of literature. It covers the period from 1865 to1870 and focuses on Paraná because of the province's importance and specificity in Brazil.Unlike previous research in military history this work aims at studying the experience of the common people. The chapters discuss the recruitment of the free poor, freed persons and indigenous people for what became the most important south-American conflict. Recruitmentis here seen through the perspective of labor history, since recruitmentand service in the Army or Navy can often be associated to forced labor
Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil: setting the baseline knowledge on the animal diversity in Brazil
The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others
In service of homeland: military recruitment in the Province of Paraná during the Paraguayan War (1865-1870)
The research analyzes the military recruitment in the Province of Paraná, Brazil, for the Paraguayan War. It is based on a wide range of historical sources: news on recruitment and war, letters sent by local authorities and private individuals to the president of the Province, reports presented by the president to the Provincial Assembly, ministerial reports (Navy and War ministries), letters sent by the president of the Province of Paraná to the Ministry of Empire and of War, and literary works related to the war. It covers the period from 1865 to 1870 and focuses on Paraná because of the province’s importance and specificity in Brazil. Unlike previous research on military history, this work highlighted the experience of common people. The chapters discuss the recruitment of free and poor men, freed persons and indigenous people for the most important South-American conflict. We consider recruitment through the perspective of labor history, since recruitment and service in the Army or Navy can often be associated to forced labor
Soldier of the nation : the rank-and-file soldiers and the National Guard of the Province of Paraná
This thesis researches into the National Guard of the Province of Paraná and the actions of those who composed it, mainly the rank-and-file soldiers (praças). We highlight what were their usual tasks and services and what meant for the humblest population, with regard to distinction and citizenship, to be part of this contingent. Given that in 1853 Paraná ceased to be part of the province of São Paulo, its example throws light on the meanings of the 1850 reform, which unified the National Guard legislation throughout the empire and conferred a life-long character to the titles of officers. A number of varied sources sustain our research, such as official correspondence between authorities, provincial and ministerial reports, legislation, criminal prosecutions, parliamentary debates, and literature itself. The thesis shows how the Brazilian National Guard, created to gather around it all the electorate citizens of the Empire, ended up being used by the free poor men as a means of accessing new and better opportunitiesDoutoradoHistoria SocialDoutor em História160405/2012-2CNP

v.34,n.3,May/June 1992Renal involvement has been well documented in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and in patients with prolonged salmonella bacteremia (PSB). Whether there is a specific renal lesion related to PSB or the chronic bacterial infection aggravates a pre-existing schistosomal glomerulopathy has been a matter of controversy. To analyze the clinical manifestations and histopathological findings of the renal involvement, 8 patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and PSB (group I) were compared with 8 patients with schistosomal glomerulopathy (group II) matched by sex and glomerular disease. The mean age in group I was 17.7 years. All patients presented with hematuria, in 4 cases associated with non-nephrotic proteinuria. In group II the mean age was 23 years; nephrotic syndrome was the clinical presentation in 7 of the 8 patients in the group. All patients in group I experienced remission of the clinical and laboratory abnormalities as the salmonella infection was cured; in group II the patients had persistent, steroid-resistant, nephrotic syndrome. On histological examination, no difference was noted between the two groups, except for pronounced glomerular hypercellularity and interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration in group I. These observations strongly suggest that PSB exacerbates a pre-existing sub-clinical schistosomal glomerulopathy by the addition of active lesions directly related to the prolonged bacteremia.São Paul
Renal involvement has been well documented in patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis and in patients with prolonged salmonella bacteremia (PSB). On histological examination, no difference was noted between the two groups, except for pronounced glomerular hypercellularity and interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration in group I. These observations strongly suggest that PSB exacerbates a pre-existing sub-clinical schistosomal glomerulopathy by the addition of active lesions directly related to the prolonged bacteremiaEnvolvimento renal tern sido documentado em pacientes com o diagnóstico de salmonelose septicêmica prolongada (SSP).
