    INCOME AND OUTCOMES - A STRUCTURAL MODEL OF INTRAHOUSEHOLD ALLOCATION

    There is evidence from several sources that one cannot treat many-person households as a single decision maker. If this is the case, then factors such as the relative incomes of the household members may affect the final allocation decisions made by the household. We develop a method of identifying how ''incomes affect outcomes'' given conventional family expenditure data. The basic assumption we make is that household decision processes lead to efficient outcomes. We apply our method to a sample of Canadian couples with no children. We find that the final allocations of expenditures on each partner depend significantly on their relative incomes and ages and on the level of lifetime wealth

    A Metric for Gradient RG Flow of the Worldsheet Sigma Model Beyond First Order

    Tseytlin has recently proposed that an action functional exists whose gradient generates to all orders in perturbation theory the Renormalization Group (RG) flow of the target space metric in the worldsheet sigma model. The gradient is defined with respect to a metric on the space of coupling constants which is explicitly known only to leading order in perturbation theory, but at that order is positive semi-definite, as follows from Perelman's work on the Ricci flow. This gives rise to a monotonicity formula for the flow which is expected to fail only if the beta function perturbation series fails to converge, which can happen if curvatures or their derivatives grow large. We test the validity of the monotonicity formula at next-to-leading order in perturbation theory by explicitly computing the second-order terms in the metric on the space of coupling constants. At this order, this metric is found not to be positive semi-definite.     Movement Kinematics Dynamically Modulates the Rolandic ~ 20-Hz Rhythm During Goal-Directed Executed and Observed Hand Actions

    First Online: 14 February 2018This study investigates whether movement kinematics modulates similarly the rolandic α and β rhythm amplitude during executed and observed goal-directed hand movements. It also assesses if this modulation relates to the corticokinematic coherence (CKC), which is the coupling observed between cortical activity and movement kinematics during such motor actions. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals were recorded from 11 right-handed healthy subjects while they performed or observed an actor performing the same repetitive hand pinching action. Subjects’ and actor’s forefinger movements were monitored with an accelerometer. Coherence was computed between acceleration signals and the amplitude of α (8–12 Hz) or β (15–25 Hz) oscillations. The coherence was also evaluated between source-projected MEG signals and their β amplitude. Coherence was mainly observed between acceleration and the amplitude of β oscillations at movement frequency within bilateral primary sensorimotor (SM1) cortex with no difference between executed and observed movements. Cross-correlation between the amplitude of β oscillations at the SM1 cortex and movement acceleration was maximal when acceleration was delayed by ~ 100 ms, both during movement execution and observation. Coherence between source-projected MEG signals and their β amplitude during movement observation and execution was not significantly different from that during rest. This study shows that observing others’ actions engages in the viewer’s brain similar dynamic modulations of SM1 cortex β rhythm as during action execution. Results support the view that different neural mechanisms might account for this modulation and CKC.     A Gradient Flow for Worldsheet Nonlinear Sigma Models

    We discuss certain recent mathematical advances, mainly due to Perelman, in the theory of Ricci flows and their relevance for renormalization group (RG) flows. We consider nonlinear sigma models with closed target manifolds supporting a Riemannian metric, dilaton, and 2-form B-field. By generalizing recent mathematical results to incorporate the B-field and by decoupling the dilaton, we are able to describe the 1-loop beta-functions of the metric and B-field as the components of the gradient of a potential functional on the space of coupling constants. We emphasize a special choice of diffeomorphism gauge generated by the lowest eigenfunction of a certain Schrodinger operator whose potential and kinetic terms evolve along the flow. With this choice, the potential functional is the corresponding lowest eigenvalue, and gives the order alpha' correction to the Weyl anomaly at fixed points of (g(t),B(t)). Since the lowest eigenvalue is monotonic along the flow and reproduces the Weyl anomaly at fixed points, it accords with the c-theorem for flows that remain always in the first-order regime. We compute the Hessian of the lowest eigenvalue functional and use it to discuss the linear stability of points where the 1-loop beta-functions vanish, such as flat tori and K3 manifolds.Comment: Accepted version for publication.     Kenaf Productivity and Morphology. When Grown in Iowa and in Kentucky. Poster Number

    Natural fibers are a promising alternative to synthetic fibers for reinforcing plastic or other composite materials, or fuel purposes. Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), a fiber crop is grown to a limited extent in the U.S. predominantly in the Southern states. Producing kenaf in the Midwestern U.S. could provide a local source of these fibers for use in a number of manufactured products and potentially for use as a biofuel feedstock. The objectives of this study were to: 1) compare the productivity and the morphology of kenaf cultivars ‘Tainung 2’ and ‘Whitten’ when grown in Iowa and Kentucky and harvested after the first killing frost; 2) assess kenaf growth over the growing season; and 3) determine management (variety and seed density) effects on kenaf productivity and morphology. When grown in Kentucky in 2014, Tainung 2 yielded 24 Mg ha-1 whereas Whitten had a yield of 19 Mg ha-1. In contrast, kenaf grown in Iowa showed a yield of 8 Mg ha-1. In 2015, kenaf grown in Iowa and Kentucky had similar yield of 12.6 Mg ha-1 on average. When grown in Iowa, kenaf response to variety and seed density was more stable over time than in Kentucky. Therefore, a producer in Kentucky could influence kenaf productivity by changing management practices and variety. Tainung 2 was in general more sensitive to location and to seed density than Whitten. In 2015, Tainung 2 planted at a denser population produced 30% greater biomass than for Whitten and other seed densities. Whitten performed similarly across locations and seed densities. Growing Tainung 2 in Kentucky produced plants with 16% more core fiber than in Iowa, but using that same variety in Iowa would result in higher bast production. Overall, kenaf production is very feasible in Kentucky and Iowa but Kentucky has greater yield potential

    We find sufficient conditions for the absence of harmonic L2L^2 spinors on spin manifolds constructed as cone bundles over a compact K\"ahler base. These conditions are fulfilled for certain perturbations of the Euclidean metric, and also for the generalized Taub-NUT metrics of Iwai-Katayama, thus proving a conjecture of Vi\csinescu and the second author.Comment: Final version, 16 page

    Chemical and vibratory signals used in alarm communication in the termite Reticulitermes flavipes (Rhinotermitidae)

    Termites have evolved diverse defence strategies to protect themselves against predators, including a complex alarm communication system based on vibroacoustic and/or chemical signals. In reaction to alarm signals, workers and other vulnerable castes flee away while soldiers, the specialized colony defenders, actively move toward the alarm source. In this study, we investigated the nature of alarm communication in the pest Reticulitermes flavipes. We found that workers and soldiers of R. flavipes respond to various danger stimuli using both vibroacoustic and chemical alarm signals. Among the danger stimuli, the blow of air triggered the strongest response, followed by crushed soldier head and light flash. The crushed soldier heads, which implied the alarm pheromone release, had the longest-lasting effect on the group behaviour, while the responses to other stimuli decreased quickly. We also found evidence of a positive feedback, as the release of alarm pheromones increased the vibratory communication among workers and soldiers. Our study demonstrates that alarm modalities are differentially expressed between castes, and that the response varies according to the nature of stimuli
