The influence of corporate culture on organizational commitment : case study of semiconductor organizations in Malaysia

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of four dimensions of corporate culture (teamwork, communication, reward and recognition, and training and development) on employees? organizational commitment within six major Malaysian semiconductor packaging organizations. Despite extensive research on corporate culture, very little empirical research has examined this area of study. Hierarchical regression analyses were employed to test the research hypotheses. The results of this study revealed that communication, training and development, reward and recognition, and teamwork are positively associated with employees? commitment. Also, communication was perceived as a dominant corporate culture dimension; it was associated with significant improvements in employees? organizational commitment. This study contributes to a better understanding of the influence of corporate culture on organizational commitment among employees within the context of the Malaysian semiconductor sector. Suggestions for future research are discussed

The purpose of the present study is to examine the effects of the five elements of TQM practices on employees’ affective commitment within six major Malaysian semiconductor contract manufacturing organizations. Despite extensive research on TQM practices, the issue of linking TQM practices with affective commitment has been found to be less focused. Sample size of the study was 377 resulting in a response rate of 75.4 percent. Regression analyses were employed to explore the relationship between TQM practices and affective commitment. Findings of the study reveal that teamwork, organizational communication, organizational trust and teamwork are positively associated with affective commitment. The study also shows that the organizational communication is perceived as a dominant TQM practice and is strongly associated with affective commitment.Total quality management, affective commitment, Malaysia, semiconductor industry

Knowledge management: Practice and performance of NGO in Maldives

    Get PDF
Knowledge Management (KM) is an emerging concept in the field of management and widely adopted in organizations of the developed countries for enhancing organizational performance. This study discusses the KM practices of non-governmental organization (NGO) such as Society for Health Education (SHE), one of the leading NGOs in Maldives. The study further focuses on the linkage between KM practices and culture, strategy, information technology and training of SHE. The Sample size of the study is 130, which has been collected by using simple random sampling technique and analyzed using statistical tools. The findings show that KM practices are not linked institutionally to the above components whereas the awareness of KM can be moderately seen. SHE is potential to improve adoption of KM for better organizational performance. The study recommends that initiatives must be taken by SHE to adopt KM practices to gain more competitive advantage

A structural analysis of greening the supplier, environmental performance and competitive advantage

    Get PDF
A clear research need has been identified to confirm the structural relationships between greening the supplier, enhanced environmental performance and improved competitive advantage, to provide an impetus for firms to green their suppliers. A mail survey was conducted and empirical data of 119 ISO 14001 manufacturing firms in Malaysia was gathered for this study. Structural equation modelling technique was applied in this research article. Results from the analysis, reveal the existence of a positive and significant linkage between green suppliers with both environmental performance and competitive advantage. At the same time, environmental performance has also been shown to positively and significantly affect competitive advantage; while environmental performance plays a partial mediating role between greening the supplier and competitiveness. Such significant finding is especially essential for the manufacturing sector registered with ISO 14001 who intend to enhance their environmental performance and carve a niche competitive edge in the business arena

Time to seize the digital evolution: Adoption of blockchain in operations and supply chain management among Malaysian SMEs

Abstract(#br)This study aims to investigate the effects of relative advantage, complexity, upper management support, cost, market dynamics, competitive pressure and regulatory support on blockchain adoption for operations and supply chain management among Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Unlike existing studies that employed linear models with Technology Acceptance Model or United Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology that ignores the organisational and environmental factors, we adopted the Technology, Organisation and Environment Framework that covers the technological dimensions of relative advantage and complexity, organisational dimensions of upper management support and cost and environmental dimensions of market dynamics, competitive pressure and regulatory support. Empirical data from 194 SMEs were investigated and ranked using a nonlinear non-compensatory PLS-ANN approach. Competitive pressure, complexity, cost and relative have significant effects on behavioural intention. Market dynamics, regulatory support and upper management support were insignificant predictors. SMEs often lack resources for technological investments but faces same requirements for streamlining business processes to optimise returns and blockchain presents a viable option for SMEs’ sustainability due to its features of immutability, transparency and security that have the potential to revolutionise businesses. This study contributes new knowledge to the literature on factors that affect blockchain adoption and justifications were discussed accordingly

Total quality management and knowledge management in Malaysian manufacturing and service firms : a structural equation modeling approach / Ooi Keng Boon

This thesis purports to empirically investigate the multidimensionality of total quality management (TQM) and its association with knowledge management (KM) as perceived by the middle to higher level managers (i.e. executives, managers, senior managers, managing directors and chief executive officers (CEOs)) in the manufacturing and service firms in Malaysia. Based on a thorough review of existing literature, six dimensions of TQM (i.e. leadership, strategic planning, customer focus, human resource management, process management and information and analysis) grounded in Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) criteria and three components of KM (i.e. knowledge acquisition, knowledge distribution and knowledge application) were identified. A total of 203 usable surveys were collected from the manufacturing and service sectors that are planning for or have obtained the ISO 9001:2000 certification. They comprised of small, medium and large Malaysian firms. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique was used to test the theoretical framework. The findings of this study proposed that four dimensions of TQM are instrumental for firms to increase their efficiency in KM. They are strategic planning, human resource management, systematic process management, as well as possessing an adequate level of information and analysis, in which strategic planning is the most significant determinant for KM in both manufacturing and service firms thus filling the literature gap of TQM and KM. However, leadership and customer focus were found to have no significant relationship to KM in both the sectors surveyed. Result of this cross sectional study also reveals insignificant difference with respect to the modeling of TQM‟s constructs validity between the two sectors. In other words, the chosen TQM practices in this study are equally applicable across both sectors. Furthermore, there also lies no significant difference in the relationship between TQM practices and the level of KM between both these sectors. One of the research limitations would be that the self-reported survey might include some biased response from the target respondents and this may pose as a major concern when verifying the pervasiveness or apparentness of the respondents towards TQM practices on KM. Nevertheless, the research creates awareness among the middle to higher level managers to focus on the six MBNQA dimensions that can help attain a superior KM. In terms of originality, this research examines the effect of six TQM practices on KM as well as presents a comparative analysis on TQM practices and KM between the two sectors from the perspective of both descriptive and structural relationships. Specifically, the construct validity and criterion validity with regards to the TQM practices is further confirmed in this thesis. Practically, this research can be used by middle to higher level managers from both the manufacturing and service side to evaluate the effectiveness of TQM practices on KM in their companies. They can focus their efforts on practices that show the most promising result for the establishment of competitive KM capabilities, by developing a deeper comprehension of the association between TQM practices and KM
