Solar Wind Variations Related to Fluctuations of the North Atlantic Oscillation

A study on a possible solar wind interaction with the North AtlanticOscillation (NAO) is performed. Results are presented suggesting arelationship between the NAO index and the electric field strength E ofthe solar wind. A possible scenario for the suggested interaction isthat an electromagnetic disturbance is generated by the solar wind inthe global electric circuit of the ionosphere. This disturbance is thendynamically propagating downward through the atmosphere and subsequentlyinfluencing the large-scale pressure system in the North Atlanticregion. A relationship is also evident on longer time-scales when usingthe group sunspot number as a proxy for the solar wind. (Art. No. 1718

Maahanmuutto & turvallisuus - arvioita nykytilasta ja ennusteita tulevaisuudelle

Maahanmuutto, turvallisuus ja ennakointi -hankkeella haettiin poikkihallinnollista ja -tieteellistä tietoa ja kokonaisvaltaista tilannekuvaa maahanmuutosta ja turvallisuudesta. Selvitys tukee viranomaisten ennaltaehkäisevää toimintaa ja kotouttamistoimien kehittämistä. Valtioneuvoston tilaama selvitys tehtiin vuoden 2015 aikana yhteistyössä Tilastokeskuksen sekä Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen kanssa. Polamk vastasi hankkeen johtamisesta ja koordinoinnista. Luku Maahanmuuton yhteys turvallisuuteen - mitä ennakoitavissa, sisältää riskitaulukot keskeisistä turvallisuusilmiöistä ja tulevaisuuden haasteista. Ilmiöt on luokiteltu vakavuusasteen mukaan kolmeen kategoriaan. Kaiken kaikkiaan monet aiemmin hiljaiset signaalit ja trendit ovat voimistuneet vuoden 2015 aikana ja mukana on myös uusia aiemmin tuntemattomia haasteita. Aineiston analyysin perusteella tunnistettiin viisi turvallisuuden kannalta haavoittuvassa asemassa olevaa ulkomaalaistaustaista ryhmää: pakolaistaustaiset maahanmuuttajat, toinen maahanmuuttajasukupolvi eli maahanmuuttajien lapset, yksin tulleet alaikäiset turvapaikanhakijat, laittomasti ilman oleskelulupaa maassa asuvat (nk. paperittomat) sekä kristityiksi kääntyneet muslimit. Hankkeessa on myös hahmoteltu indikaattoreita maahanmuuton ja turvallisuuden välisten yhteyksien seurantaa varten. Lisäksi raportin sisältämät ilmiökuvaukset, havainnot ja tutkimustulokset ilmentävät itsessään erilaisia toimenpidetarpeita osoittaessaan haasteellisia tai huonosti toimivia käytäntöjä ja ongelmallisia kehityskulkuja. Ennaltaehkäisy ja ennakointi tuottavat turvallisuutta kestävästi ja kustannustehokkaasti. Raportin toivotaankin tukevan Valtioneuvoston ennakointikykyä ja turvallisuusviran-omaisten ennaltaehkäisevää toimintaa yhteistyössä eri toimijoiden, kuten kuntien, kansalais- ja työelämäjärjestöjen, uskonnollisten yhteisöjen ja median kanssa

Solar mean magnetic field variability: A wavelet approach to Wilcox Solar Observatory and SOHO/Michelson Doppler Imager observations

Solar mean magnetic field (SMMF) measurements from the Wilcox Solar Observatory and with the SOHO/MDI instrument are described and analyzed. Even though two completely different methods of observation are used, the two data sets obtained show a strong similarity. Using continuous wavelet transforms, SMMF variability is found at a number of temporal scales. Detected SMMF signals with a 1–2 year period are considered to be linked to variations in the internal rotation of the Sun. Intermediate SMMF oscillations with a period of 80–200 days are probably connected to the evolution of large active regions. We also find evidence for 90 min variations with coronal mass ejections as a suggested origin

Intrauterine exposure to mild analgesics is a risk factor for development of male reproductive disorders in human and rat

International audienceBACKGROUND: More than half of pregnant women in the Western world report intake of mild analgesics, and some of these drugs have been associated with anti-androgenic effects in animal experiments. Intrauterine exposure to anti-androgens is suspected to contribute to the recent increase in male reproductive problems, and many of the anti-androgenic compounds are like the mild analgesics potent inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis. Therefore, it appears imperative to further investigate the potential endocrine disrupting properties of mild analgesics. METHODS: In a prospective birth cohort study, 2297 Danish and Finnish pregnant women completed a questionnaire and 491 of the Danish mothers participated in a telephone interview, reporting on their use of mild analgesics during pregnancy. The testicular position of newborns was assessed by trained paediatricians. In rats, the impact of mild analgesics on anogenital distance (AGD) after intrauterine exposure was examined together with the effect on ex vivo gestational day 14.5 testes. RESULTS: In the Danish birth cohort, the use of mild analgesics was dose-dependently associated with congenital cryptorchidism. In particular, use during the second trimester increased the risk. This risk was further increased after the simultaneous use of different analgesics. The association was not found in the Finnish birth cohort. Intrauterine exposure of rats to paracetamol led to a reduction in the AGD and mild analgesics accordingly reduced testosterone production in ex vivo fetal rat testes. CONCLUSION: There was an association between the timing and the duration of mild analgesic use during pregnancy and the risk of cryptorchidism. These findings were supported by anti-androgenic effects in rat models leading to impaired masculinization. Our results suggest that intrauterine exposure to mild analgesics is a risk factor for development of male reproductive disorders

Ämnesintegration som inkluderar matematik

Syftet med vår undersökning är att få ökad kunskap om ämnesintegration med matematik. Vi vill besvara två frågeställningar; ”Vad är enligt några pedagoger ämnesintegration som inkluderar matematikinnehåll?” och ”Vilka erfarenheter har några olika pedagoger av ämnesintegration med matematikinnehåll?”. För att besvara dessa gjorde vi kvalitativa intervjuer med sju lärare med inriktning mot grundskolans tidigare år. Resultatet visade att matematik integreras mest inom tematiskt arbete eller spontant i den dagliga diskussionen. Det framkom även att viljan finns hos pedagogerna att i större utsträckning undervisa ämnesintegrerat. Genom våra intervjuer fick vi fram att det behövs mer tid till planering och att det är svårt att integrera matematik med andra ämnen om man inte har djupare ämneskunskaper eller mer erfarenhet av matematik

Symbols of Sustainability : A cross-cultural study on consumers perceived symbolic benefits of energy efficient home appliances

Sustainability is a growing trend and companies are increasingly engaging sustainability in their core business strategy. One example of how this is manifested is through the development of products that are  labelled as energy-efficient. There is a lack of insights into how consumers perceive and gain benefits from such sustainable products, particularly so regarding the nonfunctional and non-economical benefits and into how culture influences those benefits. The purpose of this study is to investigate consumer perceived non-functional and non-economical benefits that are associated  with energy-efficient products,  in order to gain a deeper understanding on how the Swedish compared to the Thai culture influence consumers perception of energy efficient products within the home appliance industry. The literature review regarding the  symbolic meaning of products concludes that the most relevant perceived benefits of products includes emotional-, self-expressiveness-, and social benefits. A cross-cultural quantitative study performed in Sweden and Thailand determines that culture influences consumers understanding of products and thereby influence their perceived benefit from energyefficient home appliances. How culture influences consumer perceived benefits depends on the characteristics of the different cultural dimensions established by Hofstede (2010), involving: power distance, masculinity, individualism, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation
