How to study what people do. Praxeological ways to analyse doing music
From her perspective as a researcher in educational science, the author from Germany presents praxeological ways to analyse doing music. She introduces praxis theory and its methodological consequences for empirical research. With regard to a study concerning girlsâ fan culture she shows how praxeological research can provide insight into practices of doing music and doing fan and/or youth culture and how these practices are related to each other. On this basis, she discusses the potential of these approaches to research for (music) education. This article is part of the anthology European Perspectives on Music Education, Volume 11, which focusses on music practices in the classroom, diversity in music making, learning and teaching and praxeological perspectives on music education.
(Autorenreferat)"In this contribution the practical handling of differences is analysed as being framed by norms of recognition, which are examined in relation to their inclusive, respectively exclusive effects. The theoretical framework of this approach is informed by practice theory as well as Judith Butler's theory of recognition and its reception in education. This approach is demonstrated by an interpretation of two video scenes, which both show practices of handling conflicts. Those scenes are taken from an ethnographic, cross-cultural and comparative research project, which targeted pedagogical relationships in two primary schools, situated in London and Berlin. On the basis of a comparative analysis of both scenes, on the one hand, culturally different norms of recognition and their inclusive and exclusive effects can be shown. On the other hand, the potential of the chosen theoretical framework and methodical approach based on video-analysis is carved out." (author's abstract
(Autorenreferat)"The paper discusses potentials of the documentary method in cultural comparative research projects, referring to the example of a currently undertaken study about teacher-student-relationships at two primary schools situated in Berlin and London. Firstly, based on a praxeological concept of culture, methodological challenges of such studies are labelled. In this regard, a sensitivity for the overlay of meanings originating in different spaces and times in agent's practices is demanded. The paper argues consequences of Karl Mannheim's assumption about the situatedness of knowledge and points to possibilities of interpretation and translation of crossnational collected data. Potentials of comparative analysis and generation of types in documentary method are analysed in respect to cultural comparison. Finally the reflective-responsive approach in comparison is explained, which has been chosen in the exemplary study. An analysis of a responsive discussion shall clarify the benefits of this approach, which offers insights in the complex integration of the 'own' and the 'other'." (author's abstract
Biofunctionalization of zinc oxide nanowires for DNA sensory applications
We report on the biofunctionalization of zinc oxide nanowires for the attachment of DNA target molecules on the nanowire surface. With the organosilane glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane acting as a bifunctional linker, amino-modified capture molecule oligonucleotides have been immobilized on the nanowire surface. The dye-marked DNA molecules were detected via fluorescence microscopy, and our results reveal a successful attachment of DNA capture molecules onto the nanowire surface. The electrical field effect induced by the negatively charged attached DNA molecules should be able to control the electrical properties of the nanowires and gives way to a ZnO nanowire-based biosensing device
Quantifying sources of variability in infancy research using the infant-directed-speech preference
Psychological scientists have become increasingly concerned with issues related to methodology and replicability, and infancy researchers in particular face specific challenges related to replicability: For example, high-powered studies are difficult to conduct, testing conditions vary across labs, and different labs have access to different infant populations.
Addressing these concerns, we report on a large-scale, multisite study aimed at (a) assessing the overall replicability of a single theoretically important phenomenon and (b) examining methodological, cultural, and developmental
moderators. We focus on infantsâ preference for infant-directed speech (IDS) over adult-directed speech (ADS). Stimuli of mothers speaking to their infants and to an adult in North American English were created using seminaturalistic
laboratory-based audio recordings. Infantsâ relative preference for IDS and ADS was assessed across 67 laboratories in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia using the three common methods for measuring infantsâ discrimination
(head-turn preference, central fixation, and eye tracking). The overall meta-analytic effect size (Cohenâs d) was 0.35, 95% confidence interval = [0.29, 0.42], which was reliably above zero but smaller than the meta-analytic mean computed from previous literature (0.67). The IDS preference was significantly stronger in older children, in those children for whom the stimuli matched their native language and dialect, and in data from labs using the head-turn preference procedure. Together, these findings replicate the IDS preference but suggest that its magnitude is modulated by development, native-language experience, and testing procedure.
