Studien zu queeren Lesarten der Hebräischen Bibel (Studies on Queer Readings of the Hebrew Bible) deals with non-normative sexualities in the Hebrew Bible and related Jewish and Christian exegetical writings. The book presents queer readings of these sources which are developed within the framework of intertextuality. Apart from Hebrew Bible passages and rabbinic sayings that build upon them, European works of art from the Renaissance, the Baroque, and the 19th century addressing pederasty, effeminate men or sexually ambivalent figures are discussed. These works confirm that quasi-queer interpretations were already extant prior to contemporary scholarly biblical interpretations. Studien zu queeren Lesarten der Hebräischen Bibel befasst sich mit nicht normativen Sexualitäten in der Hebräischen Bibel und damit verbundenen jüdischen und christlichen exegetischen Schriften. Das Buch präsentiert queere Lesarten dieser Quellen, welche im Rahmen von Intertextualität entwickelt werden. Neben Textpassagen der Hebräischen Bibel und rabbinischen Aussagen im Anschluss an sie werden europäische Kunstwerke der Renaissance, des Barocks und des 19. Jahrhunderts besprochen, welche Knabenliebe, effeminierte Männer oder sexuell ambivalente Figuren thematisieren. Diese Werke bestätigen, dass es quasi queere Interpretationen bereits vor den heutigen wissenschaftlichen Bibelauslegungen gab

Queering Minoritarian In_Visibilities in Art & Visual Culture Renegotiated. Introduction to the Special Issue

Visibility, invisibility, and political agency have developed into a solid triad in the recent past. My long-time accomplice in science and art Thari Jungen and I were thinking a lot about this and the associated ambivalences of visibility (Schaffer 2008) again in summer 2023. The reason for this revisit was the conference Sichtbar machen – werden – sein: in queer_feministischer Perspektive von Kunst und Design (June 2023), taking place at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel. I would, therefore, like to share some introductory thoughts from our engagement with the affirmation of visibility and, in particular, highlight the ambivalences of visibility that go hand in hand with this. This serves as a basis for the introduction of the present Special Issue entitled “Queering Minoritarian In_Visibilities in Art & Visual Culture Renegotiated” and at the same time as an invitation to interweave the various contributions of it. Firstly, Thari Jungen and I asked ourselves why the paradigm of visibility not only opens up a dichotomy between invisible powerlessness and powerful visibility, but may also reproduce the ambivalences of the dominant, marginalizing logic of representation. Secondly, we asked ourselves what exactly the political nature of visibility is if the production of visibility is to become effective as a political act. And finally, which accomplices require visibility to become political? (Jungen; Nastold 2025)

Porn as Queer(ing) Feminist Utopia. Pornotopia Revised

Shown from 31 March to 4 May 2022, the exhibition pornotopia revised at Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna explored the interstice of art and post-porn in its visual and material culture. The exhibition showed contemporary works that deal with desire, sexuality, and their representations and demonstrate the grey area between porn and art. Therefore, pornotopia revised was not limited to audiovisual explorations: contemporary sculptures, paintings, and video works in the so-called Porno Plüsch Platzerl [Porn Plush Place] reflected on narratives and representations of bodies and desire. The overall focus was not primarily on voyeurism or provocation through nudity or sexual acts, but on resistance and emancipation. The artistic works took up moments from porn, queered them or used them, for example, to debate the categorization, sexualization, and objectification of bodies and to question norms around sexuality and gender binary. The exhibition deliberately played with readings and aesthetics between so-called high and low culture, between trash, kitsch, and minimalism, between analogue craft and digital expression

Wie wird Krankheit im Bild inszeniert und was sagt das über Geschlecht aus? Anhand der Darstellungen von Syphilis, Tuberkulose und Gicht analysiert Johanna Johnen geschlechtsspezifische Zuschreibungen in der Kunst. Krankheit ist nicht nur medizinisch, sondern auch gesellschaftlich codiert: als Zeichen dämonisierter Weiblichkeit, als Sinnbild für domestizierte Reinheit der weiblichen Oberschicht oder als ambivalenter Ausdruck männlicher Dekadenz. So offenbaren sich komplexe Verflechtungen von Geschlecht, Klasse und Rassifizierung in der Ikonografie der Krankheitsdarstellungen – ein kritischer Blick auf historische Bildwelten und ihre machtvollen Zuschreibungen

Zur Internalisierung sexistischer Normen im Kontext cis-weiblicher Subjektivierungsprozesse

Wie beeinflussen sexistische Normen das Denken, Fühlen und Handeln von cis-weiblichen Personen? Luisa Brandt untersucht in ihrer Arbeit, wie diese Normen im Rahmen von Subjektivierungsprozessen verinnerlicht werden und auf individueller wie gesellschaftlicher Ebene wirken. Die Arbeit kombiniert eine theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit Geschlecht, Sexismus und Subjektivierung mit einer empirischen Analyse basierend auf einer Gruppendiskussion. Sie zeigt, dass die Internalisierung sexistischer Normen im Kontext cis-weiblicher Subjektivierungsprozesse relevant ist: Während sie auf Mikroebene Einfluss auf die Subjektkonstitution nimmt, reproduziert sie auf Makroebene sexistische Machtstrukturen. Mit ihren Ausführungen setzt die Autorin neue Impulse für die Auseinandersetzung mit Macht und feministischer Befreiung

The Role of “Watershed Cases“ in Implementing Policies on Gender-Based Violence and Harassment in English Higher Education Institutions

Tackling gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) is an increasingly urgent task for higher education institutions (HEIs) globally. This article explores why HEIs take different approaches in the enactment of policies tackling GBVH. Through a comparative case study approach exploring two contrasting English HEIs, it focuses on one specific aspect of policy implementation that has been a particular challenge: formal report handling. One HEI had implemented national legal guidance in this area, while the other had not. In neither case were HEIs’ work in this area primarily driven by the national guidance; instead a proactive response in one HEI was shaped by a ‘watershed case’ of sexual violence. The article problematises analyses that homogenise the HE sector as taking a uniform approach on this issue, revealing a more complicated reality where institutional actors are highly aware of problems with institutional processes, and where cultures around GBVH shape policy implementation

“It Helps if I Don’t Come Across as the Intersex Person but as the Regular Guy”. LGBTIQ* Movements, Credibility, and Mis-Fitting in Knowledge Spaces in Austria

Knowledge spaces as diverse as universities, parliaments, and activist organisations are fraught with difficulty for those who do not easily “fit” into them. They are governed by discursive, behavioural, somatic, and material norms concerning who does or does not belong in them as well as which/whose knowledges are or are not to be considered credible. Thus, members of minoritised groups often have to negotiate their presence in hostile knowledge spaces in ways that go beyond abstract epistemological  considerations. In this paper, I discuss how LGBTIQ* activists and academics in Austria navigate knowledge spaces that may treat them as “space invaders”. Based on semi-structured interviews, I explore how participants may seek to de-emphasise or emphasise their mis-fit regarding the spaces they traverse. I examine examples of how such attempts may either not work in the first place or backfire in unintended ways, and their connections to wider societal norms and intersectional exclusions

Race to the Top: Masculinity, Sociosexual Hierarchy, and the Lives of Gay, Bisexual, Queer (GBQ+) Community in Singapore

Sexuelle Orientierung und geschlechtsspezifische Normen sind eng miteinander verwoben und werden von kulturellen, sozialen und politischen Strukturen beeinflusst. Diese prägen die soziosexuellen Hierarchien, die der Einzelne auf der Grundlage seiner sexuellen und geschlechtlichen Identität von klein auf erfährt, und wirken sich auf die Ergebnisse des Einzelnen in unterschiedlichen kulturellen Kontexten aus. Singapur stellt einen einzigartigen Fall dar, in dem euroamerikanische Ansätze mit seinen asiatischen kulturellen Wurzeln zusammenfließen. Ausgehend von dem Singapurer Fall adressiert diese Studie die bestehende Lücke im Verständnis darüber, wie soziosexuelle Hierarchien die Erfahrungen von schwulen, bisexuellen und queeren (GBQ+) Männern beeinflussen. In dieser umfassenden Studie über die gelebten Erfahrungen von GBQ+-Männern in Singapur, wurden die Interviews von neun Personen systematisch analysiert, um zu verstehen, wie die soziosexuelle Hierarchie in Singapur eschlechtsspezifische Normen beeinflusst und sich auf ihr Leben auswirkt. Ausgehend von der Theorie der prekären Männlichkeit deuten die Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass Männer aus dem gesamten Spektrum der sexuellen Orientierung GBQ+-Männer mit dem Ziel schikanieren, in der soziosexuellen Hierarchie aufzusteigen. Internalisierten Männlichkeitserwartungen führen bei GBQ+ Männern zu Scham und Selbstkontrolle, was sich auf ihre psychische Gesundheit auswirkt. Über die Selbstkontrolle hinaus betreiben GBQ+ Männer auch Community Policing, um andere GBQ+ Männer zu bestrafen, die die Männlichkeitsstandards nicht erfüllen. Trotz der Stigmatisierung widersetzten sich einige GBQ+ Community-Mitglieder der soziosexuellen Hierarchie, um ihr authentisches Selbst zu leben, was ihnen ein Gefühl der Authentizität vermittelte

Beyond a „sack for carrying things“: Der exotisierende Blick auf Burrnesha in hegemonialer Wissenschaft und Film

Dieser Artikel untersucht die Darstellung von Burrnesha in Wissenschaft und Film. Burrnesha sind in Albanien und umliegenden Regionen lebende Personen, die mit weiblicher Anatomie geboren, eine sozial männliche Rolle annehmen. Die Analyse zeigt, wie hegemoniale Diskurse Burrnesha stereotypisieren und als Symbol patriarchaler Rückständigkeit exotisieren, während ihre komplexen Identitäten oft übergangen werden. Durch eine kritische Betrachtung ethnografischer Studien, journalistischer Berichte und die Filmproduktionen Vergine Giurata und Luanas Schwur werden Mechanismen des westlichen Blicks offengelegt, der albanische Geschlechterpraktiken essentialisiert und hegemoniale Deutungshoheit perpetuiert. Abschließend wird für eine Perspektive plädiert, die Burrnesha in ihren eigenen Worten darstellt und kulturelle Vielfalt ohne westliche Projektionen anerkennt
