This article aims to provide a brief introduction to moral psychology, which is frequently studied in different subfields of the cognitive sciences today. For this purpose, first, a description of the field of moral psychology and the cognitive and evolutionary origins of morality will be presented. Then, the current theoretical discussions in the field will be summarized. In general, the article will adopt the interactionist paradigm, claiming that at least some of the moral judgments stem from biological predispositions, and environmental factors shape this biological draft. The empirical evidence from different disciplines will be summarized, and the strengths/weaknesses of this claim will be described. As a result, crucial points that should be focused on in future research will be attempted to be clarified by critically evaluating the current status of moral psychology.

Investigating the effect of infill walls on steel frame structures

Infill walls consisting of materials such as hollow concrete, hollow clay and autoclaved aerated concrete bricks are not only preferred in reinforced concrete buildings but also in steel frame structures. It is a well-known fact that infill walls limit the displacement of frames under horizontal loads. However, they may also bring about certain problems due to being placed randomly in horizontal and discontinuously in vertical directions for some architectural reasons. Moreover, cracks in frame-wall joints are observed in steel frame structures in which ductile behaving steel and brittle behaving infill walls are used together. In this study, the effect of infill walls on steel frames has been investigated. In the steel frame structure chosen for the study, four different situations consisting of different combinations of infill walls have been modeled by using ETABS Software. Later, the pushover analyses have been performed for all the models and their results have been compared. As a result of the analyses done by using the equivalent diagonal strut model, it has been found out that infill walls limit the displacement of steel frames and increase the performance of a structure. However, it has been also determined that in the steel frame structure in which the infill walls have been placed discontinuously in vertical and asymmetrically in horizontal, infill walls may lead to torsional and soft story irregularities. As a result, it is possible to observe cracks in the joints of infill walls and steel frame, the deformation properties of which differ, unless necessary precautions are taken

The roles of social norms and leadership in health communication in the context of COVID-19

The global struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic has lasted for almost three years. Although national and local leaders have often called on the public to comply with preventive measures through health communication, large sections of society sometimes violated precautions and did not adequately follow these calls. We propose that social norms and leaders' identity entrepreneurship characteristics could be essential in effective health communication. In line with this notion, we investigated the effects of social norm types and leadership on complying with preventive measures, the intention to be vaccinated, and prosocial behavioral tendency through a high-powered experiment that focused on three factors: leadership quality (presence/lack of entrepreneurship), descriptive norm (supportive/obstructive), and injunctive norm (supportive/obstructive). Results showed that when support for injunctive and descriptive norms was present, people tended to more readily adhere to preventive measures, get vaccinated, and engage in prosocial behavior. There was also a significant effect of the interaction between descriptive and injunctive norms on compliance with preventive measures. The compliance level was highest when both norm types were supportive and lowest when both were obstructive. The effect decreased in the discrepant norms condition, where one type of norm was supportive and the other obstructive. There is also a significant interaction between leadership and the descriptive norm, indicating that a combination of an entrepreneur leader and a supportive descriptive norm increases compliance with the preventive measure. We discussed the role of leadership and social norms in effective health communication

METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively selected 94 patients who underwent AF ablation in our electrophysiological laboratory from June 2007 to December 2009. 29 patients underwent manual circumferential pulmonary vein isolation (mCPVI), 35 underwent remote magnetic navigation assisted CPVI (rmtCPVI) and 30 cryoballoon CPVI (cCPVI). Antiarrhythmic drugs were systematically stopped 2 months after the procedure (end of the "blanking period"). At a mean follow-up of 12,64 +/- 6,41 months (range 2-31), the success rate for mCPVI group was 65.5% (19 patients), 66.7 % (20 patients) for the rmtCPVI group and 65.7 % (23 patients) for the cCPVI group (p = 0.625). Procedural and fluoroscopy times were significantly reduced in the cCPVI group (both p < 0.001). Univariate Cox regression showed that no clinical variables were independently associated with recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: In our center's experience cCPVI and rmtCPVI have been demonstrated to be as effective as mCPVI. cCPVI seemed to be associated with lower procedural and fluoroscopy times

A 26-year-old female patient, who presented to the emergency department with chronic renal failure, general condition disturbance and dyspnea, was intubated due to low oxygen saturation. The results of the blood biochemical test were normal except for low saturation. Our case did not have any coronary artery disease or obstructive pulmonary disease. While she was undergoing the positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) treatment in the intensive care unit, the patient was detected to have right heart failure on her echocardiogram examination and pneumomediastinum was found on her direct radiography examination and on chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT) on the 2nd day of her hospitalization. The development of pneumomediastinum associated with PEEP for low saturation appears to be a rare phenomenon. In accompany with the findings of the case, the examination data and the literature information were prepared as a case report.

METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively enrolled 21 patients aged 70 years or older (14 male; age 73 +/- 2.5 years) elected to circumferential PVI with the 28mm cryoballoon for symptomatic drug resistant paroxysmal AF. A total number of 82 pulmonary veins (PV) were evidenced. Successful isolation could be obtained in all 82 (100%) PV ostia at the end of procedure. No major complication occurred during procedure. At a mean follow-up of 11.5 +/- 4.7 months following ablation, 62% of patients did not present recurrence of atrial arrhythmias. CONCLUSION: Cryoballoon ablation may be feasible and safe in older patients. Moreover a large proportion of the latter did not present AF recurrence during follow-up

Exploring the Potential Medicinal Benefits of Ganoderma lucidum: From Metabolic Disorders to Coronavirus Infections

    Get PDF
Ganoderma lucidum is a medicinal mushroom that has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for centuries. It has been found to have a wide range of medicinal properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting effects. Recent research has focused on the potential benefits of G. lucidum in treating metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity, as well as its possible role in preventing and treating infections caused by the coronavirus. Triterpenoids are a major group of bioactive compounds found in G. lucidum, and they have a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds have been found to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels in animal models of diabetes. Additionally, G. lucidum polysaccharides have been found to reduce bodyweight and improve glucose metabolism in animal models of obesity. These polysaccharides can also help to increase the activity of certain white blood cells, which play a critical role in the body’s immune response. For coronavirus, some in vitro studies have shown that G. lucidum polysaccharides and triterpenoids have the potential to inhibit coronavirus infection; however, these results have not been validated through clinical trials. Therefore, it would be premature to draw any definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of G. lucidum in preventing or treating coronavirus infections in humans. © 2023 by the authors

A review on microbiota: relation with diseases and nutrients role

Microbiota plays an essential role in human development and body homeostasis. Individual and environmental variables influence the diversity of microbiota, which performs crucial biochemical activities in the human body and influences health status and disease in later years. Many diseases in adulthood may be prevented or treated if the relationship between the microbiome, nutrition, especially the immune system, and growth and development could be fully understood. For a healthy gut microbiota, the diet-related changes in the core microbiota must be long-lasting, achieving permanence in microbiota change. This process is possible by maintaining a sustainable diet and adhering to this diet for a long time. Therefore, this study reviewed the relationship between nutrition, microbiota, and various life-threatening diseases
