Hunting and conservation of forest pigeons in São Tomé (West Africa)

Doutoramento em Biologia - Instituto Superior de AgronomiaOn the island of São Tomé, four endemic species of fruit pigeons are hunted as food and/or as an economic resource. This thesis intended to collect and analyze the baseline data required for the management of pigeons, which take into account their importance as a resource but also their overall conservation value. For this, I used a combination of biological and social sampling methods. The results show that harvest of endemic pigeons is performed predominantly for commercial purposes by a small and specialized group of hunters, but is also widely practiced opportunistically by most hunters and rural inhabitants. The hunting pressure on the two least abundant species already determines their patterns of distribution and abundance, and their extraction is probably unsustainable. Harvesting of the most hunted species is potentially sustainable, but more research is essential to the definition of measures to manage the species. Only one species is not commercially hunted and exploitation for subsistence is sustainable. Investing beyond the core: the case of Soares da Costa

This study aims to analyze how Grupo Soares da Costa, a diversified group centered on construction, behaved in terms of strategy to the current crisis. More specifically, it purposes to understand why Soares da Costa was forced to abandon its strategic plan “Ambições Renovadas”, which was about diversification and internationalization, to decide to focus on it core business. This study uses a SWOT analysis, the examination of the strategic plans and annual reports and the conclusions of two interviews that were carried out. Being the construction sector such a traditional and significant sector to the Portuguese economy, it is important to understand what a company can do to overcome such circumstances. To deal with all the negative circumstances, Soares da Costa should give priority to projects that require low levels of initial capital and diversify geographically to markets with similar characteristics of Angola and Mozambique, where Soares da Costa already excels.NSBE - UN

Desafios do aconselhamento de cosméticos na farmácia

Trabalho Final de Mestrado Integrado, Ciências Farmacêuticas, 2022, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Farmácia.Dada a atualidade e relevância do tema, a presente monografia tem como principal objetivo abordar a temática do aconselhamento e comunicação de cosméticos em farmácia comunitária. Serão abordados os principais desafios sentidos pela indústria, bem como estratégias utilizadas pelas farmácias para continuarem a aconselhar e comunicar durante o período pandémico. Primeiramente, será feita uma contextualização relativamente ao modo como o aconselhamento de cosméticos evoluiu, referindo a inovação tecnológica e digital e o aconselhamento personalizado, bem como o modo como deve ser realizada a comunicação em farmácia. De seguida, serão explanados os vários aspetos da atualidade do mercado, bem como o impacto causado pela pandemia COVID-19, os diversos desafios que esta trouxe consigo, e fazendo referência ao perfil do consumidor atual. Como principal metodologia de estudo foram feitos 2 questionários, um a farmacêuticos e outro dirigido aos utentes da farmácia, a fim de perceber quais os principais desafios e obstáculos, respetivamente, sentidos em Portugal, a nível da farmácia. Neste sentido, para os farmacêuticos, a venda de cosméticos noutros locais diferentes da farmácia e a presença de ideias pré-concebidas por parte dos consumidores são os maiores desafios relativamente ao aconselhamento em farmácia. Por outro lado, os consumidores referem a existência de bons produtos cosméticos em supermercado, bem como o preço em farmácia, como obstáculos à aquisição destes produtos na farmácia. As principais conclusões obtidas com a realização deste trabalho são no sentido de, por um lado, ser importante a comunicação por meio digital, mas de outro modo, o canal da farmácia comunitária desempenha um papel fundamental no aconselhamento presencial de cosméticos, sobretudo nestes últimos anos, em que o papel do farmacêutico foi valorizado pelos utentes. Deste modo, é importante que as farmácias evoluam, no sentido de acompanhar este modelo híbrido, do online e do offline, dando resposta às diferentes gerações de consumidores e às suas necessidades.Given the current situation and relevance of the topic, the main objective of this monograph is to address the issue of counseling and communication of cosmetics in community pharmacy. The main challenges felt by the industry will be addressed, as well as strategies used by pharmacies to continue to advise and communicate during the pandemic period. First, a contextualization will be made regarding how cosmetics counseling has evolved, referring to technological and digital innovation and personalized counseling, as well as how communication in pharmacy should be carried out. Next, the various aspects of the current market will be explained, as well as the impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the various challenges that it has brought with it, and referring to the profile of the current consumer. As the main study methodology, 2 questionnaires were made, one for pharmacists and another for pharmacy users, in order to understand the main challenges and obstacles, respectively, felt in Portugal, at the pharmacy level. In this sense, for pharmacists, the sale of cosmetics in places other than the pharmacy and the presence of preconceived ideas on the part of consumers are the biggest challenges regarding pharmacy advice. On the other hand, consumers refer to the existence of good cosmetic products in the supermarket, as well as the price in the pharmacy, as obstacles to the purchase of these products in the pharmacy. The main conclusions obtained with the realization of this work are in the sense that, on the one hand, communication through digital means is important, but otherwise, the community pharmacy channel plays a fundamental role in face-to-face cosmetics counseling, especially in recent years, in which the role of the pharmacist was valued by the users. Thus, it is important that pharmacies evolve, in order to follow this hybrid model, of online and offline, responding to different generations of consumers and their needs

Aldosterona e seus receptores: novos alvos para a prevenção da morte de neurónios na retinopatia diabética

Dissertação de mestrado em Bioquímica, apresentada ao Departamento de Ciências da Vida da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra.Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the main cause of blindness of people in working age. The prevalence of DR increases with duration of diabetes, and nearly all persons with type 1 diabetes and more than 60% of those with type 2 have some retinopathy after 20 years. Since a large percentage of patients diagnosed with diabetes end up developing retinopathy, considerable effort is being invested on prophylactic interventions. Early work focused on improving glycemic control; however, clinical observations demonstrated that blood pressure is an important modifiable risk factor for diabetic retinopathy and that reducing high blood pressure decreased significantly the development and progression of retinopathy both type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients (Simó R e Hernández C, 2009). Therefore, have been developed studies on the reninangiotensin- aldosterone system (RAAS), system involved in the control blood pressure, blood volume and electrolyte balance. Over the last years has been demonstrated that some components of the RAAS are expressed in different constituents of the eye (Fletcher EL et. al., 2010). One of the RAAS components is angiotensin II (Ang II). Previous studies have shown that the eye has the ability to form Ang II (Fletcher et. al., 2010), and the effects of Ang II in the blood vessels of the retina are also known. Ang II causes vasoconstriction of retinal arterioles, capillaries and venules via actions on AT1R (Ang II type 1 receptor) (Kawamura et. al., 2004; Rokwood et. al., 1987; Schofelder et. al., 1998). However, the role played by aldosterone, the last component of the RAAS, in the development of retinal complications associated with diabetes has been poorly studied. Thus, the main purpose of this work was to study the effect of diabetes / hyperglycemia in the synthesis and action of aldosterone in the retina, in particular the effect of the antagonism of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MCR) with eplerenone in the prevention of retinal neuronal death induced by diabetes / hyperglycemia that occurs in the early stages of DR, even before the detection of vascular lesions. In this study we observed not only the presence of the MCR and aldosterone synthase in the retina, but also an increase in total protein levels of aldosterone synthase and MCR under hyperglycemic conditions in retinal cell cultures, and in diabetic animals. We have found that aldosterone can be synthesized in the retina, and in addition, we have confirmed its plasma levels are elevated in diabetic animals. This allows us toinduce that there is a retinal site and system of aldosterone action that is affected by diabetes / hyperglycemia. The viability and cellular death studies have demonstrated the involvement of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in retinal neuronal death. In these studies we observed that the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism prevent neuronal death by the process of necrosis of the retina and it occurs in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy. In summary, this study shows that there is a system of aldosterone action in the retina, that this system is affected by diabetes / hyperglycemia and the antagonism of MCR with eplerenone can be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.A retinopatia diabética (RD) é a principal causa de cegueira em pessoas em idade de trabalhar. A prevalência da RD aumenta com a duração da diabetes, quase todas as pessoas com diabetes do tipo 1 e mais de 60% das pessoas com o tipo 2 têm retinopatia após 20 anos de diabetes. Como uma grande parte das pessoas que têm diabetes tendem a desenvolver retinopatia, esforços consideráveis têm sido investidos em intervenções profiláticas. A melhoria do controle glicémico foi o primeiro factor a ser estudado, porém, ensaios clínicos têm demonstrado que a pressão arterial é um importante e modificável factor de risco para retinopatia diabética e que a redução da pressão arterial elevada diminui significativamente o desenvolvimento e progressão da retinopatia em ambos os tipos de pacientes diabéticos (Simó R e Hernández C, 2009). Assim, têm vindo a ser desenvolvidos estudos sobre o sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona (RAAS), sistema envolvido no controlo pressão arterial, volemia e equilíbrio hidroelectrolítico. Ao longo dos últimos anos tem sido demonstrado que alguns componentes do RAAS são expressos em diferentes constituintes do olho (Fletcher EL et. al., 2010). Um dos componentes do RAAS é a angiotensina II (Ang II). Estudos anteriores mostram que o olho possui a capacidade de formar Ang II (Fletcher EL et. al., 2010), sendo também conhecidos os efeitos da Ang II nos vasos sanguíneos da retina. A Ang II provoca vasoconstrição das arteríolas retinianas, vénulas e capilares através da ligação ao receptor de angiotensina do tipo 1 (AT1R) (Kawamura et. al., 2004; Rokwood et. al., 1987; Schofelder et. al., 1998). No entanto, o papel da aldosterona, o último componente do RAAS, no desenvolvimento de complicações na retina associadas à diabetes, tem sido pouco estudado. Desta forma, o objectivo principal deste trabalho foi estudar o efeito da diabetes/hiperglicemia na síntese e acção da aldosterona na retina, em particular no efeito do antagonismo dos receptores mineralocorticóides (MCR) com eplerenona na prevenção da morte neuronal na retina induzida pela diabetes/hiperglicemia, que ocorre nas fases iniciais da RD, mesmo antes da detecção de lesões vasculares. Neste estudo observamos não só a presença dos MCR e da aldosterona sintetase na retina, mas também um aumento nos níveis de proteína total dos MCR e da aldosterona sintetase em culturas celulares de retinas, expostas a elevadas concentraçõesde glicose, e em modelos animais diabéticos. Para além de aldosterona poder ser sintetizada na retina, confirmamos que os seus níveis no plasma se encontram aumentados em modelos animais diabéticos. O que nos permite induzir que existe na retina um local e sistema de acção da aldosterona que é afectado pela diabetes/ hiperglicemia. Os estudos de viabilidade e morte celular vieram demonstrar o envolvimento do sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona na morte neuronal da retina. Através destes estudos podemos observar que o antagonismo dos receptores mineralocorticóides previne a morte neuronal, pelo processo de necrose, da retina que ocorre nas fases iniciais da retinopatia diabética. Em suma, este trabalho mostra que existe um sistema de acção da aldosterona na retina, que esse sistema é afectado pela diabetes/hiperglicemia e que o antagonismo dos MCR com eplerenona pode ser um possível alvo terapêutico para o tratamento da retinopatia diabética

Sobre o entusiasmo e a leitura literária

Este artigo, de viés ensaístico, propõe uma reflexão sobre as possíveis (e produtivas) relações entre o entusiasmo e o ensino da leitura literária. Considerando alguns dos estudos de Annie Rouxel, Michèle Petit, Rolland Barthes, Marcos Natali, entre outros, defende-se que, se centralizado na ideia de sujeito leitor, que deve compreender não só a figura do educando mas também a do educador, o ensino de literatura criticamente entusiasmado dá espaço ao prazer da leitura e, também, a modos mais democráticos de se viver em conjunto, seja em sala de aula ou fora dela

COPIAR, COLAR, REPETIR: A POESIA EM DESLOCAMENTO DE MARÍLIA GARCIA E SEUS EFEITOS SOBRE A LEITURA NA ERA DA CULTURA DIGITAL

Este texto reflete sobre os procedimentos utilizados pela poeta Marília Garcia em seus livros um teste de resistores e Câmera lenta (publicados em 2014 e 2017, respectivamente) a fim de promover o que podemos chamar de uma poética do deslocamento. A partir de uma série de trechos de poemas de Marília, mostra-se como a poeta se vale de procedimentos como os de copiar, colar (citar) e repetir. Trata-se de procedimentos comuns à cultura digital, mas que na poesia de Marília operam de outro modo, mais devagar e atento. Dessa exposição e discussão, depreende-se que a proposição de outro ritmo, somada à reflexão sobre a linguagem que existe nessa poesia, sugere outros modos de lidar com a rapidez da época em que vivemos, além de incentivar um novo modo de ler dentro da cultura digital, um modo mais pessoal, curioso e ativo.ReferênciasBARTHES, Rolland.
