    Bayesian change-point analysis reveals developmental change in a classic theory of mind task

    Although learning and development reflect changes situated in an individual brain, most discussions of behavioral change are based on the evidence of group averages. Our reliance on group-averaged data creates a dilemma. On the one hand, we need to use traditional inferential statistics. On the other hand, group averages are highly ambiguous when we need to understand change in the individual; the average pattern of change may characterize all, some, or none of the individuals in the group. Here we present a new method for statistically characterizing developmental change in each individual child we study. Using false-belief tasks, fifty-two children in two cohorts were repeatedly tested for varying lengths of time between 3 and 5 years of age. Using a novel Bayesian change point analysis, we determined both the presence and—just as importantly—the absence of change in individual longitudinal cumulative records. Whenever the analysis supports a change conclusion, it identifies in that child’s record the most likely point at which change occurred. Results show striking variability in patterns of change and stability across individual children. We then group the individuals by their various patterns of change or no change. The resulting patterns provide scarce support for sudden changes in competence and shed new light on the concepts of "passing" and "failing" in developmental studies.National Science Foundation (Grant IDs: BCS-0725169, BCS-0922184), Economic and Social Research Counci

    IoT Forensics: Challenges For The IoA Era

    Challenges for IoT-based forensic investigations include the increasing amount of objects of forensic interest, relevance of identified and collected devices, blurry network boundaries, and edgeless networks. As we look ahead to a world of expanding ubiquitous computing, the challenge of forensic processes such as data acquisition (logical and physical) and extraction and analysis of data grows in this space. Containing an IoT breach is increasingly challenging – evidence is no longer restricted to a PC or mobile device, but can be found in vehicles, RFID cards, and smart devices. Through the combination of cloud-native forensics with client-side forensics (forensics for companion devices), we can study and develop the connection to support practical digital investigations and tackle emerging challenges in digital forensics. With the IoT bringing investigative complexity, this enhances challenges for the Internet of Anything (IoA) era. IoA brings anything and everything “online” in a connectedness that generates an explosion of connected devices, from fridges, cars and drones, to smart swarms, smart grids and intelligent buildings. Research to identify methods for performing IoT-based digital forensic analysis is essential. The long-term goal is the development of digital forensic standards that can be used as part of overall IoT and IoA security and aid IoT-based investigations

    Intramolecular H⋯S interactions in metal di-(isopropyl)dithiocarbamate complexes

Networks of C-H⋯S interactions have been discovered within the molecular structure of sodium di-(isopropyl)dithiocarbamate pentahydrate with the formula Na(C7H14NS2)·5H2O, revealed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. These interactions have also been investigated by ab initio and Hirshfeld surface analyses which show that the electron density is not symmetrical about the molecule. NMR spectroscopy in solution and solid the state showed temperature dependent restricted rotation of the isopropyl groups, which is attributed to the intramolecular C-H⋯S interactions. The ubiquitous nature of C-H⋯S intramolecular interactions in this class of compound is evident in the structures of other di-(isopropyl)dithiocarbamate complexes deposited in the CSD. In general, the restricted rotation in di-(isopropyl)dithiocarbamate complexes can be directly attributed to intramolecular C-H⋯S interactions, which subsequently influence the geometry in association with steric repulsion factors

    Context Mining of Sedentary Behavior for Promoting Self-Awareness Using Smartphone

    Sedentary behaviour is increasing due to societal changes and is related to prolonged periods of sitting. There is sufficient evidence proving that sedentary behaviour has a negative impact on people’s health and wellness. This paper presents our research findings on how to mine the temporal contexts of sedentary behaviour by utilizing the on-board sensors of a smartphone. We use the accelerometer sensor of the smartphone to recognize user situations (i.e., still or active). If our model confirms that the user context is still, then there is a high probability of being sedentary. Then, we process the environmental sound to recognize the micro-context, such as working on a computer or watching television during leisure time. Our goal is to reduce sedentary behaviour by suggesting preventive interventions to take short breaks during prolonged sitting to be more active. We achieve this goal by providing the visualization to the user, who wants to monitor his/her sedentary behaviour to reduce unhealthy routines for self-management purposes. The main contribution of this paper is two-fold: (i) an initial implementation of the proposed framework supporting real-time context identification; (ii) testing and evaluation of the framework, which suggest that our application is capable of substantially reducing sedentary behaviour and assisting users to be active

    Cuts and flows of cell complexes

    We study the vector spaces and integer lattices of cuts and flows associated with an arbitrary finite CW complex, and their relationships to group invariants including the critical group of a complex. Our results extend to higher dimension the theory of cuts and flows in graphs, most notably the work of Bacher, de la Harpe and Nagnibeda. We construct explicit bases for the cut and flow spaces, interpret their coefficients topologically, and give sufficient conditions for them to be integral bases of the cut and flow lattices. Second, we determine the precise relationships between the discriminant groups of the cut and flow lattices and the higher critical and cocritical groups with error terms corresponding to torsion (co)homology. As an application, we generalize a result of Kotani and Sunada to give bounds for the complexity, girth, and connectivity of a complex in terms of Hermite's constant.Comment: 30 pages.     Prenatal hypoxia induces increased cardiac contractility on a background of decreased capillary density.

    Background: Chronic hypoxia in utero (CHU) is one of the most common insults to fetal development and may be associated with poor cardiac recovery from ischaemia-reperfusion injury,yet the effects on normal cardiac mechanical performance are poorly understood. Methods: Pregnant female wistar rats were exposed to hypoxia (12% oxygen, balance nitrogen)for days 10–20 of pregnancy. Pups were born into normal room air and weaned normally. At 10 weeks of age, hearts were excised under anaesthesia and underwent retrograde 'Langendorff' perfusion. Mechanical performance was measured at constant filling pressure (100 cm H2O) with intraventricular balloon. Left ventricular free wall was dissected away and capillary density estimated following alkaline phosphatase staining. Expression of SERCA2a and Nitric Oxide Synthases (NOS) proteins were estimated by immunoblotting. Results: CHU significantly increased body mass (P < 0.001) compared with age-matched control rats but was without effect on relative cardiac mass. For incremental increases in left ventricular balloon volume, diastolic pressure was preserved. However, systolic pressure was significantly greater following CHU for balloon volume = 50 μl (P < 0.01) and up to 200 μl (P < 0.05). For higher balloon volumes systolic pressure was not significantly different from control. Developed pressures were correspondingly increased relative to controls for balloon volumes up to 250 μl (P < 0.05).Left ventricular free wall capillary density was significantly decreased in both epicardium (18%; P <0.05) and endocardium (11%; P < 0.05) despite preserved coronary flow. Western blot analysis revealed no change to the expression of SERCA2a or nNOS but immuno-detectable eNOS protein was significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in cardiac tissue following chronic hypoxia in utero. Conclusion: These data offer potential mechanisms for poor recovery following ischaemia, including decreased coronary flow reserve and impaired angiogenesis with subsequent detrimental effects of post-natal cardiac performance

    Health literacy, health status, and healthcare utilization of Taiwanese adults: results from a national survey

    Abstract Background Low health literacy is considered a worldwide health threat. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and socio-demographic covariates of low health literacy in Taiwanese adults and to investigate the relationships between health literacy and health status and health care utilization. Methods A national survey of 1493 adults was conducted in 2008. Health literacy was measured using the Mandarin Health Literacy Scale. Health status was measured based on self-rated physical and mental health. Health care utilization was measured based on self-reported outpatient clinic visits, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations. Results Approximately thirty percent of adults were found to have low (inadequate or marginal) health literacy. They tended to be older, have fewer years of schooling, lower household income, and reside in less populated areas. Inadequate health literacy was associated with poorer mental health (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.35-0.91). No association was found between health literacy and health care utilization even after adjusting for other covariates. Conclusions Low (inadequate and marginal) health literacy is prevalent in Taiwan. High prevalence of low health literacy is not necessarily indicative of the need for interventions.     Lysyl oxidase drives tumour progression by trapping EGF receptors at the cell surface

    Lysyl oxidase (LOX) remodels the tumour microenvironment by cross-linking the extracellular matrix. LOX overexpression is associated with poor cancer outcomes. Here, we find that LOX regulates the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to drive tumour progression. We show that LOX regulates EGFR by suppressing TGFβ1 signalling through the secreted protease HTRA1. This increases the expression of Matrilin2 (MATN2), an EGF-like domain-containing protein that traps EGFR at the cell surface to facilitate its activation by EGF. We describe a pharmacological inhibitor of LOX, CCT365623, which disrupts EGFR cell surface retention and delays the growth of primary and metastatic tumour cells in vivo. Thus, we show that LOX regulates EGFR cell surface retention to drive tumour progression, and we validate the therapeutic potential of inhibiting this pathway with the small molecule inhibitor CCT365623

    Mononuclear silver and mercury complexes bearing bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands withlinear coordination modes have been prepared and structurally characterised. The complexes form metallocyclic structures that display rigid solution behaviour. A larger metallocycle of the form [L2Ag2]2+ [where L = parabis(N-methylimidazolylidene)xylylene] has been isolated from the reaction of para-xylylene-bis(N-methylimidazolium) chloride and Ag2O. Reaction of silver- and mercury-NHC complexes with Pd(NCCH3)2Cl2 affords palladium-NHC complexes via NHC-transfer reactions, the mercury case being only the second example of a NHC-transfer reaction using a mercury-NHC complex
