Constrictive pericarditis and rheumatoid nodules with severe aortic incompetence.
The case of a female patient presenting with constrictive rheumatoid pericarditis and aortic incompetence secondary to valvular rheumatoid nodules is described along with a review of the literature with the aim to highlight this rare cause of aortic insufficiency
Software Process Assessment (SPA)
NASA's environment mirrors the changes taking place in the nation at large, i.e. workers are being asked to do more work with fewer resources. For software developers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), the effects of this change are that we must continue to produce quality code that is maintainable and reusable, but we must learn to produce it more efficiently and less expensively. To accomplish this goal, the Data Systems Technology Division (DSTD) at GSFC is trying a variety of both proven and state-of-the-art techniques for software development (e.g., object-oriented design, prototyping, designing for reuse, etc.). In order to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques, the Software Process Assessment (SPA) program was initiated. SPA was begun under the assumption that the effects of different software development processes, techniques, and tools, on the resulting product must be evaluated in an objective manner in order to assess any benefits that may have accrued. SPA involves the collection and analysis of software product and process data. These data include metrics such as effort, code changes, size, complexity, and code readability. This paper describes the SPA data collection and analysis methodology and presents examples of benefits realized thus far by DSTD's software developers and managers
Signatures of selection in core and accessory genomes indicate different ecological drivers of diversification among Bacillus cereus clades (article)

How selection works on different parts of bacterial pan-genomes to drive and maintain the emergence of clades is unclear. Focussing on the three largest clades in the diverse and well-studied Bacillus cereus sensu lato group, we identified clade-specific core genes (present in all clade members) and then used clade-specific allelic diversity to identify genes under purifying and diversifying selection. Clade-specific accessory genes (present in a subset of strains within a clade) were characterized as being under selection using presence/absence in specific clades. Gene ontology analyses of genes under selection revealed that different core genes and gene functions were enriched in different clades. Furthermore, some gene functions were enriched only amongst clade-specific core or accessory genomes. Genes under purifying selection were often clade-specific, while genes under diversifying selection showed signs of frequent HGT. These patterns are consistent with different selection pressures acting on both the core and accessory genomes of different clades and can lead to ecological divergence in both cases. Examining variation in allelic diversity allows us to uncover genes under clade-specific selection, allowing ready identification of strains and their ecological niche.Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC
Banking from Leeds, not London: regional strategy and structure at the Yorkshire Bank, 1859–1952
Industrial philanthropist Edward Akroyd created the Yorkshire Penny Savings Bank in 1859. Despite competition from the Post Office Savings Bank after 1861 and a serious reserve problem in 1911, it sustained his overall strategy to become a successful regional bank. Using archival and contemporary sources to build on recent scholarship illustrating how savings banks were integrated into local economies and the complementary roles of philanthropy and paternalism, we analyse an English regional bank's strategy, including an assessment of strategic innovation, ownership changes and management structure. This will demonstrate that the founder's vision continued, even though the 1911 crisis radically altered both strategy and structure
Autopsy in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD).
The adult congenital heart diseases (ACHD) population is exceeding the pediatric congenital heart diseases (CHD) population and is progressively expanding each year, representing more than 90% of patients with CHD. Of these, about 75% have undergone surgical and/or percutaneous intervention for palliation or correction. Autopsy can be a very challenging procedure in ACHD patients. The approach and protocol to be used may vary depending on whether the pathologists are facing native disease without surgical or percutaneous interventions, but with various degrees of cardiac remodeling, or previously palliated or corrected CHD. Moreover, interventions for the same condition have evolved over the last decades, as has perioperative myocardial preservations and postoperative care, with different long-term sequelae depending on the era in which patients were operated on. Careful clinicopathological correlation is, thus, required to assist the pathologist in performing the autopsy and reaching a diagnosis regarding the cause of death. Due to the heterogeneity of the structural abnormalities, and the wide variety of surgical and interventional procedures, there are no standard methods for dissecting the heart at autopsy. In this paper, we describe the most common types of CHDs that a pathologist could encounter at autopsy, including the various types of surgical and percutaneous procedures and major pathological manifestations. We also propose a practical systematic approach to the autopsy of ACHD patients
Rapid tyrosine phosphorylation of neuronal proteins including tau and focal adhesion kinase in response to amyloid-beta peptide exposure: Involvement of src family protein kinases
The increased production of amyloid beta -peptide (A beta) in Alzheimer's disease is acknowledged to be a key pathogenic event. In this study, we examined the response of primary human and rat brain cortical cultures to A beta administration and found a marked increase in the tyrosine phosphorylation content of numerous neuronal proteins, including tau and putative microtubule-associated protein 2c (MAP2c). We also found that paired helical filaments of aggregated and hyperphosphorylated tau are tyrosine phosphorylated, indicating that changes in the phosphotyrosine content of cytoplasmic proteins in response to A beta are potentially an important process. Increased tyrosine phosphorylation of cytoskeletal and other neuronal proteins was specific to fibrillar A beta (25-35) and A beta (1-42). The tyrosine phosphorylation was blocked by addition of the Src family tyrosine kinase inhibitor 4-amino-5-( 4-chlorophenyl)- 7(t-butyl) pyrazol(3,4-D) pyramide (PP2) and the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase inhibitor LY 294002. Tyrosine phosphorylation of tau and MAP2c was concomitant with an increase in the tyrosine phosphorylation and subsequent putative activation of the non-receptor kinase, focal adhesion kinase (FAK). Immunoprecipitation of Fyn, a member of the Src family, from A beta (25-35)-treated neurons showed an increased association of Fyn with FAK. A beta treatment of cells also stimulated the sustained activation of extracellular regulated kinase-2, which was blocked by addition of PP2 and LY 294002, suggesting that FAK/Fyn/PI3-kinase association is upstream of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase signaling in A beta -treated neurons. This cascade of signaling events contains the earliest biochemical changes in neurons to be described in response to A beta exposure and may be critical for subsequent neurodegenerative changes
The shape of invasion perclation clusters in random and correlated media
The shape of two-dimensional invasion percolation clusters are studied
numerically for both non-trapping (NTIP) and trapping (TIP) invasion
percolation processes. Two different anisotropy quantifiers, the anisotropy
parameter and the asphericity are used for probing the degree of anisotropy of
clusters. We observe that in spite of the difference in scaling properties of
NTIP and TIP, there is no difference in the values of anisotropy quantifiers of
these processes. Furthermore, we find that in completely random media, the
invasion percolation clusters are on average slightly less isotropic than
standard percolation clusters. Introducing isotropic long-range correlations
into the media reduces the isotropy of the invasion percolation clusters. The
effect is more pronounced for the case of persisting long-range correlations.
The implication of boundary conditions on the shape of clusters is another
subject of interest. Compared to the case of free boundary conditions, IP
clusters of conventional rectangular geometry turn out to be more isotropic.
Moreover, we see that in conventional rectangular geometry the NTIP clusters
are more isotropic than TIP clusters
Pathwise Sensitivity Analysis in Transient Regimes
The instantaneous relative entropy (IRE) and the corresponding instanta-
neous Fisher information matrix (IFIM) for transient stochastic processes are
pre- sented in this paper. These novel tools for sensitivity analysis of
stochastic models serve as an extension of the well known relative entropy rate
(RER) and the corre- sponding Fisher information matrix (FIM) that apply to
stationary processes. Three cases are studied here, discrete-time Markov
chains, continuous-time Markov chains and stochastic differential equations. A
