Pairing Along the Line
Pairing energies for the addition of two neutrons on even-even nuclei with are studied. The dependence is attributed to the number and type of
orbitals that are occupied in the valence shell-model space. Properties in the
region from depend on the location of the orbital.Comment: 3 pages and 2 figure
A market inventory of construction wood for residential building in Europe – in the light of the Green Deal and new circular economy ambitions
Wood is an energy efficient, low carbon construction material that if carefully managed can contribute significantly to European climate policy goals in urban environments. The aim of this study is to assess the current construction wood use intensity the ratio of apparent national consumption of wood for construction (in m3) to the useful floor area of newly finished dwellings (in m2) and to identify when and where additional policy measures are required. Results show that Cyprus/Malta have the smallest use with a ratio of 0.01, Estonia/Romania the greatest use with a ratio of 0.32. The need for additional policy measures, was assessed using the Boston Consultancy Group (BCG) matrix with four product development phases, based on the aforementioned ratio versus future growth. Six, twelve, eight and two countries are in the “Introduction“, “Growth”, ”Maturity” and “Decline” phases, respectively. At the EU level, the European Commission should consider introducing a Renewable Material Directive, in which a Non-biogenic Material Comparator shows the average GHG substitution effect of using wood for construction. At the international level, a new harvested wood product (HWP) category in the IPCC Guidelines is recommended for construction wood with a longer lifespan than the current HWP categories
The Investment Channel of Monetary Policy : Evidence from Norway
We investigate the transmission of monetary policy to investment using Norwegian administrative data. We have two main findings. First, financially constrained firms are more responsive to monetary policy, but the effect is modest; suggesting that firm heterogeneity plays a minor role in monetary transmission. Second, we disentangle the investment channel of monetary policy into direct effects from interest rate changes and indirect general equilibrium effects. We find that the investment channel of monetary policy is due almost exclusively to direct effects. The two results imply that a representative firm framework with investment adjustment frictions in most cases provides a sufficiently detailed description of the investment channel of monetary policy.publishedVersio
Genetic variations in the Vitamin D receptor predict type 2 diabetes and myocardial infarction in a community-based population: The tromsø study
Background
Though the associations between low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and
health outcomes such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), myocardial infarction (MI), cancer, and
mortality are well-studied, the effect of supplementation with vitamin D is uncertain. This
may be related to genetic differences. Thus, rs7968585, a single nucleotide polymorphism
(SNP) of the vitamin D receptor (VDR), has recently been reported as a predictor of composite
health outcome. We therefore aimed to evaluate whether rs7968585 predicts separate
clinical outcomes such as T2D, MI, cancer, and mortality in a community-based Norwegian
population.
Methods and Findings
Measurements and DNA were obtained from the participants in the Tromsø Study in 1994–
1995, registered with the outcomes of interest and a randomly selected control group. The
impact of the rs7968585 genotypes was evaluated with Cox proportional hazards. A total of
8,461 subjects were included among whom 1,054 subjects were registered with T2D, 2,287
with MI, 3,166 with cancer, and 4,336 with death. Mean follow-up time from birth was 60.8
years for T2D and MI, 61.2 years for cancer, while mean follow-up time from examination
date was 16.5 years for survival. Mean serum 25(OH)D levels did not differ across the
rs7968585 genotypes. With the major homozygote genotype as reference, the minor homozygote
subjects had hazard ratios of 1.25 (95% CI 1.05–1.49) for T2D and 1.14 (1.02–1.28)
for MI (P = 0.011 and 0.023, respectively, without the Bonferroni correction). No significant interaction between serum 25(OH)D status and the rs7968585 genotype was found for any
of the endpoints.
Conclusions
The VDR-related SNP rs7968585 minor allele is a significant and positive predictor for T2D
and possibly for MI. Since the functional mechanism of this SNP is not yet understood, and
the association with T2D is reported for the first time, confirmatory studies are needed
Stimulating fertility awareness: the importance of getting the language right
While education about fertility is not intrinsically controversial, finding the right language to communicate the topic can be challenging, as there are several risks of unintended negative effects such as dissonance, anxiety, culpability, and stigma due to social norming. In this article, we share some of our learnings from promoting fertility awareness in the hope that they will inspire further debate and research on this topic. Starting from the ethical principles of respect for reproductive autonomy, avoiding harm (in terms of stigma or anxiety) and inclusivity, we have formulated five recommendations: (i) frame fertility awareness messages with (reproductive) autonomy in mind and aim to be inclusive of those who do not represent the traditional nuclear family; (ii) be empathetic and steer clear of blame; (iii) avoid scaremongering and offer a positive angle; (iv) give due consideration to both women and men in fertility health messaging; and (v) tailor the messages to particular contexts and audiences and develop resources in close collaboration with the target groups
Onderzoek: Nederland loopt Mijlenver Achter in Houtbouw
Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I
We show that determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors of a generic
matrix have a non-commutative desingularization, in that we construct a maximal
Cohen-Macaulay module over such a variety whose endomorphism ring is
Cohen-Macaulay and has finite global dimension. In the case of the determinant
of a square matrix, this gives a non-commutative crepant resolution.Comment: 52 pages, 3 figures, all comments welcom
An experimental test of the habit-goal framework : Depressive rumination is associated with heightened habitual characteristics of negative thinking but not habit-directed behavior control

The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether rumination is associated with habitual attributes and whether it is related to an imbalance in habit relative to goal-directed behavior control. University students (N=115) completed self-report questionnaires, a rumination induction paradigm and an outcome devaluation task that measures habitual vs goal-directed behavior control. Greater habitual characteristics of negative thinking (e.g., automaticity, lack of conscious awareness, control, and intent) were associated with ruminative brooding but not ruminative reflection and predicted more persistent dysphoric mood following rumination induction. Rumination was not, however, consistently associated with an imbalance in habit versus goal-directed behavior control. These findings indicate that depression vulnerability may be in the form of rumination being habitually triggered (without awareness or intent) with deleterious effects on mood. Although habitual, rumination may not be related to an imbalance in habit relative to goal-directed behavior control. These findings provide support for current theoretical accounts of rumination and set important boundary conditions in the search for specific factors that contribute to rumination as a habit.Peer reviewe
