    BUILDING STUDENTS’ DIGITAL LITERACY SKILL THROUGH WEBLOG-LIBRARY CENTER APPROACH

    In connection with today’s digitalization era,the integration of ICT into English literacy learningneeds more concern from educators. Teachers are encouraged to explore the use of ICT and develop students’ digital literacy skill as well. This study used weblog-library center as one of alternative to use in literacy learning. This study involved forty students of the eleventh grade divided into experimental and control group. Both groups were given digital literacy questionnaire in the beginning and at the end of the studycovering four digital literacy components; basic ICT skills, information sources, digital competencies, andattitude and perspective toward digital usage and digital transformation. In addition, observation was conducted in experimental group to obtain clear information about students’ digital literacy progress. The questionnaire was analyzed by using paired and independent sample t-tests. Meanwhile, observation results were calculated using percentage analysis. The results indicate that weblog-library center could improve students’ digital literacy not only as the students perceived, but also as the teacher percieved. The experimental students could use digital tool properly and appropriately so that their ICT skill developed, the knowledge about getting information sources increased, digital competence enhanced and attitude and perspective about digital usage and transformation were positive.

    INTEGRATING ENGLISH INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY TO EMPOWER STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

    Abstract: The integration of technology into English Language Teaching (ELT) has been developed recently. Many studies revealed that the impacts of English instructional technology can enhance the students’ English learning achievements. However, there are some problems that need more concern from educators.One of them is reading comprehension as it is one of the crucial skills in National Examination in Indonesia. To empower students’ reading comprehension, the successful integration of English instructional technology into ELT could be the solution to cope with it. In this study, Webquest is an instructional technology tool used to increase students’ reading comprehension achievements. Sixty two of senior high school students were involved as participants of this study. By conducting experimental research, thirty-one students were in the experimental group and the others were in the control group. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved higher scores than the control group. It indicates that Webquest is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension achievements. In a nutshell, the implementation of technology in ELT could empower students’ reading comprehension. Key words: English instructional technology, reading comprehension, Webques

    THE INFLUENCE OF ENGLISH READING ATTITUDE ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

    Attitude in reading the English texts drives students to have enjoyable or unpleasing reading practice and affects the final result. This study intended to look for the influence of English reading attitude along with its aspects on students' reading comprehension. It also attempted to figure out which aspect of reading attitude contributed to reading comprehension. This study was conducted using correlation method. The population was the tenth grade students of an Islamic Senior High School in Palembang. The total sample participated was118 students selected by using cluster random technique. The data collection technique used reading attitude questionnaire and reading comprehension test. After analyzing the data using correlation and regression analysis, it was found that there was a significant correlation between reading attitude and reading comprehension. Though the correlation was in low category, reading attitude gave contribution to reading comprehension. For the aspects of reading attitude, cognitive attitude, negative affect, and self-assessment significantly correlated to reading comprehension. However, only negative affect showed its contribution. It indicates that English reading attitude influenced reading comprehension in positive way but only in small portion. Students could recognize the importance of reading English text for their language improvement and future success. However, poor reading comprehension skill obstructed them to have more practice in reading.     Fostering Students’ Writing Achievement Through Weblog

    To support students’ academic success, it is essential to equip them with good ability in writing. However, most of students encounter some problems in writing since writing involves essential, constructive, and complicated process. There are several ways to facilitate students to develop their writing. Due to many students inherent interest in technological things, thus implementing an online tool can be an alternative way to foster students’ writing achievement. One of the choices is using weblog. As many studies revealed that weblog could enhance students’ writing skills. Therefore, this study integrated weblog into students learning activities. Furthermore, it involved forty eleventh grade students that divided into two groups; experimental and control groups. At the end of the study, the students in experimental group gained better writing achievement than those who were in control group. It points out that learning through weblog could help students to enhance their writing achievement

    THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ICT-INTEGRATED ELT ACROSS CURRICULUM 2013 IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN PALEMBANG

    Infusing technology into English Language Teaching can contribute positive impacts toward students’ learning if it is integrated in such a way. Curriculum 2013 proposes the integration of Information Communication Technology into instructional practices. This study investigatedwhether or not the teachers of English integrated ICT into their ELT; described about how ICT was implemented in ELT; and explored the obstacles faced by the teachers of English in implementing ICT. This study surveyed ten state Senior High Schools in Palembang. Twelve teachers of English and 200eleventh grade students participated in this study chosen by using purposive samplingtechnique. In gathering the data, questionnairewas administered. The results showed that most English teachers and students integrated ICT in their classroom. ICT was implemented as instructional tools to facilitate English learning in the classroom. However, they still faced some obstacles in integrating ICT into ELT. School supports became the main factor hindering ICT implementation at schools

    Awareness on Elementary Schools English Handbook: Teaching Material Appropriateness Survey Research

    This study aims to investigate teachers’ and students’ awareness on elementary schools students’ English handbook in terms of the students’ need and interest. It was a survey research involving 5 teachers of English and also 120 fifth grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri II Palembang. A likert scale questionnaire was distributed as the instrument which was validated and tried out to determine the rigor of the instrument. The data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis. The finding revealed that dealing with elementary schools students English handbook, the teachers tended to disagree that that it was designed based on childrens’ need and interest at the aspect of teaching material, but they agreed that the English handbook fulfilled students’ need and interest in terms of teaching and learning process. Then, students tended to agree that their English handbook fulfil their need and interest. Teachers tended to agree that they need to do some adaptation when using the handbook. Dealing with expectation, teachers tended to strongly disagree that there should be both evaluation and improvement given by the government related to the use of the elementary schools students’ English handbook. In contrast, children tended to agree that government should evaluate and improve the use of elementary schools students English handbook

    STUDENTS' PERCEPTION IN USING ZOOM APPLICATION DURING ONLINE LEARNING IN FKIP AT TRIDINANTI UNIVERSITY PALEMBANG

    The widespread use of the internet brings impact to education and provides the solution for many educational institutions to conduct online learning during Covid-19 pandemic.This study aimed to determine students’ perception in using Zoom application during online learning in Faculty of Teacher Training and Education at Tridinanti University Palembang. Descriptive quantitative survey method was carried out. This study involved 104 students who experienced online learning by using Zoom Application. For collecting the data, questionnaire was used and distributed online to the students. Most students perceived positively toward the use of Zoom application during online learning. The results of this study showed that: (1) Using Zoom application during online learning gave students new learning experience and benefits, (2) Zoom application offers some features that can be easily operated by the users, (3) Zoom application became online learning platform preference, (4)  Using Zoom application could improve students ICT skill, (5) The use of Zoom application during online learning would be continuously used by students, and (6) Students did not find serious problem to participate in online learning using Zoom application.     Analyzing non-English major students’ needs, attitudes, and English language learning strategies

    Students learn English with different educational backgrounds at university level. Through this course, students can get the opportunity to develop their English competence for their learning success and future professional needs. To maximise the attainments of the goals, ESP teachers need to design ESP courses relevant to the students’ needs and conditions. This study surveyed 180 non-English major students to investigate their needs in learning English, learning attitude, and language learning strategies. The results reveal students still lacking in all English skills and language use. Therefore, ESP teachers should provide learning materials and inputs that can develop students’ English competence. ESP teachers need to struggle to make non-English major students hold a positive attitude toward English language learning. This finding showed that even though the students had confidence and motivation in learning English, they felt anxious and insecure during the teaching and learning process. Since this study involved non-English major students from different educational backgrounds, it was found that students’ language learning strategies were various. The results did not show certain strategies used by the students in learning English in higher education. ESP teachers should provide a variety of teaching techniques that can help students maximise their English language learning

    Empowering Children’s English Literacy by Listen and Do Song

    ABSTRACT: Song is an effective and interesting teaching tool in the classroom of language learning. It is regarded as one of the most enjoyable ways for practicing and developing English literacy of young learners. It is also useful to encourage them to be active in order to improve their skills. The purpose of this article is therefore threefold: first, theoretical discussion that presents about English literacy and young learners. Second, some suggestions of giving the selections of songs are given regarding the activities. Third, some recommended teaching instruction for listen and do song that empowers children’s English literacy. Incorporating song into language learning serves not only as an effective teaching tool but also provides a positive learning experience for young learners.
