Understanding Fixed Point Theorems
Fixed point theorems are the standard tool used to prove
the existence of equilibria in mathematical economics. This paper
shows how to prove a slight generalization of Brouwer's and
Kakutani's fixed point theorems using the familiar
techniques of drawing and shifting curves in the plane and is,
therefore, intelligible without advanced knowledge of topology.
This makes proofs of fixed point theorems accessible to a broader
audience.

Existence of Equilibrium in Models of International Trade with Perfect or Imperfect Competition
Dixit and Norman ("Theory of International Trade", Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1980) showed that, under certain conditions, the world economy replicates the equilibrium of the hypothetical integrated economy without national borders in the traditional trade model with perfect competition. Helpman and Krugman ("Market Structure and Foreign Trade. Increasing Returns, Imperfect Competition, and the International Economy", Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1985) extended their analysis to settings with imperfectly competitive sectors. This paper derives necessary and
sufficient conditions for the existence of free trade equilibria with replication in models with perfect or imperfect competition.

Strong Cryptography: The Global Tide of Change
Encryption technology allows people using electronic networks to ensure that the messages they send remain private--secure from hackers, industrial espionage, government wiretap abuses, and spies. Encryption technology will prove vital to the future of electronic commerce. For example, thefts of nuclear secrets from U.S. national laboratories would be much less likely if the labs' commercial software had built-in encryption features that could be used to limit unauthorized access--a type of security product discouraged by export controls. For years the U.S. government has struggled unsuccessfully to control the export of encryption technology from this country. Those ineffectual controls do, however, adversely affect the competitive position of the U.S. software industry and national security. Despite the controls, powerful encryption products are increasingly available around the world. Those products include Pretty Good Privacy, which offers 128-bit encryption, and many others. This paper provides a list of Web sites where such products may be found, thus establishing beyond doubt the futility of controls. Although some of the Web sites may from time to time disappear, others will spring up in their place
A Game Theoretic Foundation for the Stiglitz-Weiss Model
Contrary to what is usually assumed in the literature, the return function (i.e., the relation
between the interest rate on loans and the resulting rate of return) cannot be globally humpshaped
in the Stiglitz-Weiss (1981) adverse selection model with a continuum of borrower types.
It is possibly non-monotonic, but it attains its global maximum at the maximum interest rate
beyond which there is no demand for capital. Arnold and Riley (2007) argue that if the return
function has a unique local maximum and there is excess demand at the corresponding interest
rate, the two-interest rate equilibrium discussed by Stiglitz and Weiss (1981) in the context of
a return function with multiple humps is the natural equilibrium outcome of the model. The
present paper substantiates this claim by providing an explicit game theoretic foundation for
the Stiglitz-Weiss (1981) model. Modeling competition in the markets for deposits and credit
as a two-stage game, as in Stahl (1988) and Yanelle (1989), we show that the two-interest
rate allocation occurs in any subgame perfect pure-strategy equilibrium if the credit subgame
precedes the deposit subgame
Anything is Possible: On the Existence and Uniqueness of Equilibria in the Shleifer-Vishny Model of Limits of Arbitrage
This paper gives a complete characterization of the equilibria in Shleifer and Vishny's (1997) model of "Limits of Arbitrage". We show that expected wealth (the arbitrageurs' objective function) is a possibly non-concave function of investment and that the relation between investment and prices is not necessarily continuous or single-valued or well-defined. As a result, "anything is possible": non-existence or multiplicity of equilibria may arise, and sunspots may govern the equilibrium selection in the latter case.
Trans-spectral orbital angular momentum transfer via four-wave mixing in Rb vapor
We report the transfer of phase structure and, in particular, of orbital angular momentum from near-infrared pump light to blue light generated in a four-wave-mixing process in Rb-85 vapor. The intensity and phase profile of the two pump lasers at 780 and 776 nm, shaped by a spatial light modulator, influences the phase and intensity profile of light at 420 nm, which is generated in a subsequent coherent cascade. In particular, we observe that the phase profile associated with orbital angular momentum is transferred entirely from the pump light to the blue. Pumping with more complicated light profiles results in the excitation of spatial modes in the blue that depend strongly on phase matching, thus demonstrating the parametric nature of the mode transfer. These results have implications on the inscription and storage of phase information in atomic gases
On the Possibility of Credit Rationing in the Stiglitz-Weiss Model
Contrary to what is consistently assumed in the
literature, the return function cannot be hump-shaped in the
Stiglitz-Weiss (1981) model. This has important consequences for
the possible occurrence of credit rationing and redlining. With a
single class of borrowers, banks offer credit in two stages.
Demand possibly exceeds supply in stage one, but not in stage two.
With several observationally distinguishable borrower classes, the
firms in a borrower class are redlined only under circumstances
which imply that they would not get credit in a perfect capital
market either.

Multi-Country Endogenous Growth Models
The transitional dynamics of open-economy endogenous growth models are largely unexplored. The present paper fills this gap in the literature. By applying the familiar Dixit-Norman (1980) approach to a general class of growth models, it provides original results on the transitional dynamics of the multi-country open-economy versions of several prominent special cases, including the models of Romer (1986, 1990), Lucas (1988), Grossman and Helpman (1991a, Chapters 3 and 4, 1991b), Jones (1995a), and Segerstrom (1998). This approach also shows that, in the class of models considered, the question of whether or not international economic integration accelerates growth in the long run is equivalent to the question of whether or not scale effects prevail. Reale Außenwirtschaftstheorie ; Endogenes Wirtschaftswachstum; ; international trade ; endogenous growth
Finite size scaling analysis of compact QED
We describe results of a high-statistics finite size scaling analysis of 4d
compact U(1) lattice gauge theory with Wilson action at the phase transition
point. Using a multicanonical hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm we generate data
samples with more than 150 tunneling events between the metastable states of
the system, on lattice sizes up to 18^4. We performed a first analysis within
the Borgs-Kotecky finite size scaling scheme. As a result, we report evidence
for a first-order phase transition with a plaquette energy gap, G=0.02667(20),
at a transition coupling, beta_T=1.011128(11).Comment: Lattice 2000 (Topics in Gauge Theories),6 pages, 6 figures, LaTe
