Strange quark suppression from a simultaneous Monte Carlo analysis of parton distributions and fragmentation functions
We perform the first simultaneous extraction of unpolarized parton
distributions and fragmentation functions from a Monte Carlo analysis of
inclusive and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan lepton-pair
production, and single-inclusive annihilation data. We use data
resampling techniques to thoroughly explore the Bayesian posterior distribution
of the extracted functions, and use -means clustering on the parameter
samples to identify the configurations that give the best description across
all reactions. Inclusion of the semi-inclusive data reveals a strong
suppression of the strange quark distribution at parton momentum fractions , in contrast with the ATLAS observation of enhanced strangeness
in and production at the LHC. Our study reveals significant
correlations between the strange quark density and the strange kaon
fragmentation function needed to simultaneously describe semi-inclusive
production data from COMPASS and inclusive spectra in
annihilation from ALEPH and SLD, as well as between the strange and light

Applications of Equivariant Topology In Cascading Makeev Problems
Many solutions to problems arising in discrete geometry have come from insights in equivariant topology. Configuration-Space/Test Map (CS/TM) type setups, pioneered by Zivaljevic, offer reductions of combinatorial or geometric facts to showing the nonexistence of certain -equivariant maps . In particular, partitions of objects by arcs, planes, and convex sets, and Tverberg theorems have been particularly amenable to topological methods , since their solutions affect the global structure of the relevant topological objects. However, there have been limits to the method as demonstrated by a failure to solve of the celeberated and now settled Topological Tverberg conjecture and, more generally, difficulty in finding sharp bounds for various conjectures. Nonetheless, we seek to employ characteristic classes, a cohomological invariant common to Borsuk-Ulam type problems, since these allow us to use explicit polynomial calculations to sharpen results to related problems. While determining sharp topological results for equipartition problems is a hard problem, there has been recent success in finding precise solutions by adding geometric constraints to the problem of plane equipartitions. This suggests that the polynomial method still has its use in related problems, and we employ these methods to``cascading Makeev type problems
Universal alternating order around impurities in antiferromagnets
The study of impurities in antiferromagnets is of considerable interest in
condensed matter physics. In this paper we address the elementary question of
the effect of vacancies on the orientation of the surrounding magnetic moments
in an antiferromagnet. In the presence of a magnetic field, alternating
magnetic moments are induced, which can be described by a universal expression
that is valid in any ordered antiferromagnet and turns out to be independent of
temperature over a large range. The universality is not destroyed by quantum
fluctuation, which is demonstrated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the
two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Physical predictions for finite
doping are made, which are relevant for experiments probing Knight shifts and

Patterson Function from Low-Energy Electron Diffraction Measured Intensities and Structural Discrimination
Surface Patterson Functions have been derived by direct inversion of
experimental Low-Energy Electron Diffraction I-V spectra measured at multiple
incident angles. The direct inversion is computationally simple and can be used
to discriminate between different structural models. 1x1 YSi_2 epitaxial layers
grown on Si(111) have been used to illustrate the analysis. We introduce a
suitable R-factor for the Patterson Function to make the structural
discrimination as objective as possible. From six competing models needed to
complete the geometrical search, four could easily be discarded, achieving a
very significant and useful reduction in the parameter space to be explored by
standard dynamical LEED methods. The amount and quality of data needed for this

Accurate radial velocity and metallicity of the Large Magellanic Cloud old globular clusters NGC1928 and NGC1939
We present results obtained from spectroscopic observations of red giants located in the fields of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters (GCs) NGC1928 and NGC1939. We used the GMOS and AAOmega+2dF spectrographs to obtain spectra centred on the Ca II triplet, from which we derived individual radial velocities (RVs) and metallicities. From cluster members we derived mean RVs of RVNGC1928 = 249.58±4.65 km s-1 and RVNGC1939 = 258.85±2.08 km s-1, and mean metallicities of [Fe/H]NGC1928 = -1.30±0.15 dex and [Fe/H]NGC1939 = -2.00±0.15 dex. We found that both GCs have RVs and positions consistent with being part of the LMC disc, so that we rule out any possible origin, but in the same galaxy. By computing the best solution of a disc that fully contains each GC, we obtained circular velocities for the 15 known LMC GCs. We found that 11/15 of the GCs share the LMC rotation derived from HST and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This outcome reveals that the LMC disc existed since the very early epoch of the galaxy formation and experienced the steep relatively fast chemical enrichment shown by its GC metallicities. The four remaining GCs turned out to have circular velocities not compatible with an in situ cluster formation, but rather with being stripped from the SMC.Fil: Piatti, Andres Eduardo. Thermodynamic properties of Pb determined from pressure-dependent critical-field measurements
We have carried out extensive low-temperature (1.5 to 10 K) measurements of
the critical field, , for the element Pb up to a pressure of GPa.
From this data the electronic entropy, specific heat, thermal expansion
coefficient and compressibility is calculated as a function of temperature,
pressure and magnetic field. The zero-field data is consistent with direct
thermodynamic measurements and the -dependence of and specific heat
coefficient, allows the determination of the -dependence of

Patients with ALS show highly correlated progression rates in left and right limb muscles.
ObjectiveAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progresses at different rates between patients, making clinical trial design difficult and dependent on large cohorts of patients. Currently, there are few data showing whether the left and right limbs progress at the same or different rates. This study addresses rates of decline in specific muscle groups of patients with ALS and assesses whether there is a relationship between left and right muscles in the same patient, regardless of overall progression.MethodsA large cohort of patients was used to assess decline in muscle strength in right and left limbs over time using 2 different methods: The Tufts Quantitative Neuromuscular Exam and Accurate Test of Limb Isometric Strength protocol. Then advanced linear regression statistical methods were applied to assess progression rates in each limb.ResultsThis report shows that linearized progression models can predict general slopes of decline with good accuracy. Critically, the data demonstrate that while overall decline is variable, there is a high degree of correlation between left and right muscle decline in ALS. This implies that irrespective of which muscle starts declining soonest or latest, their rates of decline following onset are more consistent.ConclusionsFirst, this study demonstrates a high degree of power when using unilateral treatment approaches to detect a slowing in disease progression in smaller groups of patients, thus allowing for paired statistical tests. These findings will be useful in transplantation trials that use muscle decline to track disease progression in ALS. Second, these findings discuss methods, such as tactical selection of muscle groups, which can improve the power efficiency of all ALS clinical trials
GPS scintillations associated with cusp dynamics and polar cap patches
This paper investigates the relative scintillation level associated with cusp
dynamics (including precipitation, flow shears, etc.) with and without the
formation of polar cap patches around the cusp inflow region by the EISCAT
Svalbard radar (ESR) and two GPS scintillation receivers. A series of polar cap
patches were observed by the ESR between 8:40 and 10:20 UT on December 3, 2011.
The polar cap patches combined with the auroral dynamics were associated with a
significantly higher GPS phase scintillation level (up to 0.6 rad) than those
observed for the other two alternatives, i.e., cusp dynamics without polar cap
patches, and polar cap patches without cusp aurora. The cusp auroral dynamics
without plasma patches were indeed related to GPS phase scintillations at a
moderate level (up to 0.3 rad). The polar cap patches away from the active cusp
were associated with sporadic and moderate GPS phase scintillations (up to 0.2
rad). The main conclusion is that the worst global navigation satellite system
space weather events on the dayside occur when polar cap patches enter the
polar cap and are subject to particle precipitation and flow shears, which is
analogous to the nightside when polar cap patches exit the polar cap and enter
the auroral oval
