    An Initial Exploration of Improved Numerics within the Guidelines of the Negative Spalart-Allmaras Turbulence Model

    A simple modification to the negative Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is suggested so that when the turbulence working variable, ~v, is negative, diagonal dominance is increased, as is the tendency for the time-advancement scheme to push e toward positive values. Owing to the fact that the modification is only active when ~v is less than zero, the physical model is left unchanged. Using the proposed modification with a strong implicit solver based on Newton's method, convergence rates can be somewhat improved, with typical reductions in iterations and computer time on the order of 15-50%. The benefits are realized primarily when second- or higher-order accuracy is used for discretizing the convective terms in the turbulence model because of large overshoots that can occur with these schemes at the edges of boundary layers and wakes. For flowfields with few regions of negative ~v, or on very fine meshes where ~v is always greater than zero, little or no benefits should be expected

    We have developed microfluidic chips for automating molecular biology processes such as gene ligation and gene transformation from nanolitre sample volumes with parallel architecture. Unlike conventional tube methods with cumbersome pipetting procedures, all processes, including metering of samples, ligation and transformation, were carried out in the microfluidic chips through pneumatic control of the nanofluid. The microfluidic devices presented here offer an illustration of some of the basic physics that arises when trying to miniaturize and automate biological techniques

Much work of importance, both theoretical and historiographic, has appeared in subsequent years, and the present edition tries to bring the story up to the end of the 20th century, as the title promised. This has involved an overall editing of the text, in the process correcting some errors of fact and interpretation, as well as the addition of new material and many new references

    Experimentally validated quantitative linear model for the device physics of elastomeric microfluidic valves

    A systematic experimental study and theoretical modeling of the device physics of polydimethylsiloxane “pushdown” microfluidic valves are presented. The phase space is charted by 1587 dimension combinations and encompasses 45–295 µm lateral dimensions, 16–39 µm membrane thickness, and 1–28 psi closing pressure. Three linear models are developed and tested against the empirical data, and then combined into a fourth-power-polynomial superposition. The experimentally validated final model offers a useful quantitative prediction for a valve's properties as a function of its dimensions. Typical valves (80–150 µm width) are shown to behave like thin springs

    Time resolved structural dynamics of butadiyne-linked porphyrin dimers

    In this work the timescales and mechanisms associated with the structural dynamics of butadiyne-linked porphyrin dimers are investigated through time resolved narrowband pump / broadband probe transient absorption spectroscopy. Our results confirm previous findings that the broadening is partly due to a distribution of structures with different (dihedral) angular conformations. Comparison of measurements with excitations on the red and blue sides of the Q-band unravel the ground and excited state conformational re-equilibration timescales. Further comparison to a planarized dimer, through addition of a ligand, provide conclusive evidence for the twisting motion performed by the porphyrin dimer in solution

    This paper is an effort to analyze the connection between failed new nation states, crime, and terrorism. Terrorist-criminal links in Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries pose one of the greatest potential threats to U.S. security, as many of these states are rent with economic instability, political turmoil, and religious fervor. Given sufficient profit incentives, criminal groups may be tempted to steal nuclear materials from poorly guarded Russian facilities and sell them to terrorist groups. The flight of Al Qaeda affiliates from Afghanistan into Central Asia following the US-led military intervention in 2001 has exacerbated this problem

    René de Saussure and the theory of word formation

    This volume presents two works elaborating a general theory of words and their structure written by René de Saussure, younger brother of Ferdinand de Saussure. Although originating in René de Saussure's concerns for the structure of Esperanto, these essays are clearly intended to articulate a general account of word formation in natural language. They appear here in the French original with facing English translations, accompanied by some remarks on René de Saussure's life and followed by essays on the Esperantist background of his analysis (by Marc van Oostendorp), the contemporary relevance of his morphological theory (by Stephen Anderson), and the semantic theory of words underlying his analysis (by Louis de Saussure). These two works have remained essentially unknown to the community of scholars in general linguistics since their publication in 1911 and 1919, respectively, although Esperantists have been aware of them. They develop in quite explicit form a theory of what would later be called morphemic analysis, based primarily on data from French (with some material from German and English, as well as occasional examples from other Indo-European languages). In its fundamental aspect, René's view of word formation differed significantly from that of his brother, who saw the structure of complex words as revealed not through their decomposition into smaller "atomic" units but rather in the relations between words, relations which could be presented in analogical form and which anticipate rule-based theories of morphological structure. The contrast between the two brothers' views thus anticipates basic issues in current theorizing about word structure
