We evaluated the potential of Mesocyclops annulatus as a control agent of Aedes aegypti in La Plata city (Argentina). Mosquito larval survivorship due to predation by these copepods was estimated at weekly intervals during the oviposition period of A. aegypti. Mean weekly A. aegypti larval survivorship in cylindrical plastic containers (12 cm height and 11 cm diameter) with copepods was significantly lower than in control containers. Furthermore, weekly larval survival was negatively correlated with M. annulatus adult density, and approximately 23 adult copepods/container would be a threshold density over which the weekly mosquito larval survivorship approached zero. The copepods were able to persist in all containers during approximately 100 days (in three of them until the end of the experiment: 155 days) without the resource represented by A. aegypti larvae. The predation and persistence observed suggest that M. annulatus is a potential control agent to be considered in biological control programs.Fil: Marti, Gerardo Anibal. Alzheimer´s disease (AD) is the most prevalent disorder of senile dementia mainly characterized by amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) deposits in the brain. Cannabinoids are relevant to AD as they exert several beneficial effects in many models of this disease. Still, whether the endocannabinoid system is either up- or down-regulated in AD has not yet been fully elucidated. Thus, the aim of the present paper was to analyze endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) metabolism in cerebral cortex synaptosomes incubated with Aβ oligomers or fibrils. These Aβ conformations were obtained by "aging" the 1-40 fragment of the peptide under different agitation and time conditions. A diminished availability of 2-AG resulting from a significant decrease in diacylglycerol lipase (DAGL) activity was observed in the presence of large Aβ1-40 oligomers along with synaptosomal membrane damage, as judged by transmission electron microscopy and LDH release. Conversely, a high availability of 2-AG resulting from an increase in DAGL and lysophosphatidic acid phosphohydrolase activities occurred in the presence of Aβ1-40 fibrils although synaptosomal membrane disruption was also observed. Interestingly, neither synaptosomal mitochondrial viability assayed by MTT reduction nor membrane lipid peroxidation assayed by TBARS formation measurements were altered by Aβ1-40 oligomers or fibrils. These results show a differential effect of Aβ1-40 peptide on 2-AG metabolism depending on its conformation.Fil: Pascual, Ana Clara. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. This is a participatory project developed in a Portuguese kindergarten and organized into two phases. The first is the development of a multidisciplinary activity plan made for and with children. The goal is to work with children in a TALK area inside the classroom to improve language, and to initiate them into Information Communication Technologies (ICT) skills promoting Media Education (ME) as well. In Portugal, ICT integration is rarely implemented at kindergarten age, and frequently uses dependent technologies (requiring adult assistance). On the other hand, in literature tangible interfaces are considered a good approach to fulfill child abilities and start digital literacy. The second phase intends to update a low-cost manipulative to the same end: a digital flannel board. Nevertheless, children are its design builders, and as co-researchers they will plan, execute, explore, play and evaluate their own interface.CIE

Brazil is one of the biggest consumer markets for dental implants in the world, and most of the information that patients have about this therapy is acquired from the internet. However, no study evaluated the quality of online information related to dental implants in Brazilian domain sites. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of online information in Portuguese language related to dental implants and to compare this information with the literature in English language. The term "dental implants" was searched using Google and Yahoo!. Sites of the first 10 pages of each search engine were considered for the study, and at the end 53 sites were included. The Health-Related Web Site Evaluation Form (HRWEF/ Emory) was applied and a total score was assigned to each of the sites by two researchers. The HRWEF/Emory questionnaire gives a possible variation of 50% -100%, being below 75% considered poor, between 75 and 90% adequate and above 90% excellent. 5.66% of the sites had poor score, 84.90% adequate and 9.43% excellent, with an average of 83.18%. When the questionnaire was separated by categories of linked issues, the quality scores were lower than those observed in the overall assessment (39.52% were poor), showing that the scores on the final results were increased by the readability and navigability categories. There was no difference regarding quality of websites between the search engines Google and Yahoo!. The quality of information on Brazilian domain sites related to dental implants is overall adequate according to HRWEF/Emory. Get PDF
Pomacea canaliculata is native to Rio de la Plata basin, and it is invasive in most of South and Southeast Asia after accidental introduction during unsuccessful attempts to establish commercial aquaculture of this species, and being present, the number one pest of rice crops in the region. Investigations in its native habitat are still needed because fundamental issues of its trophic ecology remain unknown. The aim of this research was to study the diet of P. canaliculata in its natural habitat through gut content techniques and stable isotopes of 13C and 15N. Biological samples were taken from November 2009 to December 2010 in Carnaval stream, a characteristic Pampean stream. Samples for stable isotopes of 13C and 15N using of a mixing model were collected in November 2011. The trophic strategy diagram evinced a generalist diet with high consumption of detritus followed by the vascular plants and algae. The mixing model results indicated that the relative contribution to the diet was similar for all basal resources: fine and coarse particulate organic matter, epipelon and aquatic macrophytes (approximately 40 %). These results evidenced a strong dietary plasticity for the species. Academic literacy requires the progressive mastery of textual and discursive forms of each discipline. The aim of this study is to analyze the learning styles of college students, comparing them by type of episteme (Human Sciences- Sciences). The research was a descriptive-correlational study with a transversal design. We applied the Index of Learning Styles of Felder & Silverman (1998) to 62 engineering students and 71 psychology students of first-year of a public university in Argentina. The main results show that students begin higher education with different learning styles. The discrepancies found were accentuated by the type of discipline; obtaining statistically significant differences in the styles of perception (sensory-intuitive), representation (visual-verbal) and comprehension (sequential-global).The engineering students were defined as sensory and visual. Instead, the guidelines in Psychology are intuitive, verbal, and sequential. Educational implications are discussed.Fil: Ventura, Ana Clara. Application of urea-agarose gel electrophoresis to select non-redundant 16S rRNAs for taxonomic studies: palladium(II) removal bacteria

    Get PDF
The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene has been the most commonly used sequence to characterize bacterial communities. The classical approach to obtain gene sequences to study bacterial diversity implies cloning amplicons, selecting clones, and Sanger sequencing cloned fragments. A more recent approach is direct sequencing of millions of genes using massive parallel technologies, allowing a large-scale biodiversity analysis of many samples simultaneously. However, currently, this technique is still expensive when applied to few samples; therefore, the classical approach is still used. Recently, we found a community able to remove 50 mg/L Pd(II). In this work, aiming to identify the bacteria potentially involved in Pd(II) removal, the separation of urea/heat-denatured DNA fragments by urea-agarose gel electrophoresis was applied for the first time to select 16S rRNA-cloned amplicons for taxonomic studies. The major raise in the percentage of bacteria belonging to genus Clostridium sensu stricto from undetected to 21 and 41 %, respectively, for cultures without, with 5 and 50 mg/L Pd(II) accompanying Pd(II) removal point to this taxa as a potential key agent for the bio-recovery of this metal. Despite sulfate-reducing bacteria were not detected, the hypothesis of Pd(II) removal by activity of these bacteria cannot be ruled out because a slight decrease of sulfate concentration of the medium was verified and the formation of PbS precipitates seems to occur. This work also contributes with knowledge about suitable partial 16S rRNA gene regions for taxonomic studies and shows that unidirectional sequencing is enough when Sanger sequencing cloned 16S rRNA genes for taxonomic studies to genus level.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

: In this article we describe and analyze several impacts that coronavirus has produced over some aboriginal population from America and Argentina, taking into consideration, their responses, understanings and developed strategies, related to state policies. Likewise, we develop an analytical description of possibilities that the ethnographic method, belonging to the anthropological sciences, offers, for a multidimensional approach. This method also makes it possible to advise, evaluate and monitor certain public policies. When it comes to the information obtained, it was acquired using several secondary sources of data and interviews posted on the Internet.
