Outsourcing property management perspective : universities in the District of Perak Tengah / Nurul Sahida Fauzi ... [et al.]

    Get PDF
Outsourcing is the most popular property management practice especially when the management demanded a portion of skilled labor. Generally, the scope of the outsource property management differs from one organization to another. Due to that, sometimes none of these areas hit the desired objectives of outsourcing since they are absent of clear policies by the organization. Furthermore there is lack of awareness on the existence of these entities. The study on outsource property management perspective in universities have never been discussed. This discrepancy needs to be addressed as universities are the starting place to inculcate this awareness since the services provided will indirectly affect the students and staff performances. Thus, this study is carried out (1) to identify the types of outsource property management used by universities in the district of Perak Tengah (Universiti Teknologi Mara, UiTM (Perak) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas, UTP), (2) to gauge the extent of awareness among the students and staff towards the services provided; and (3) to measure the level of satisfaction amongst the respondents on the services provided. This study hopes to contribute towards the awareness of the existence of property management outsourcing and to improve the quality and sustainability of the property management profession. The quantitative method of data collection is used in this study. Structured questionnaires were randomly distributed among students and staff of both universities. Data from the questionnaire was analysed using the SPSS software. The results revealed that 63% of the respondents are aware of the existence of property management outsourcing in their area while 38% are not. Mean analysis showed most of the respondents are satisfied with the services provided where the mean score achieved lies within the range of (3.50 ≤ value ˂ 4.50). This implies that even though they are not aware of the existence of property management outsourcing in their area, they still scored a high level of satisfaction with the services provided

The increasing demand of Eucalyptus camaldulensis for its multipurpose values has called forth efforts to produce improved materials of this tree species. Here we study the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on multiple shoot induction and develop a protocol for a workable micropropagation of improved selected genotype of E. camaldulensis Dehn. Shoot tips and nodal segments initiated from meristematic region were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium containing six concentrations of cytokinin i.e. 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 mgL-1 of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) plus 0.1 mgL-1 of auxin i.e. α-Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) or Indole Butyric Acid (IBA). Maximum mean shoot length (8.11mm) and mean shoot number (5.01) were obtained from shoot tips after four weeks of culture compared to the mean shoot length (7.73 mm) and mean number of shoots (4.75) from nodal segments. The best growth in terms of mean shoot length (11.83 mm) and mean number of roots (9.10) was obtained with a combination of 3.0 mgL-1 of BAP and 0.1 mgL-1 of NAA. Protocol developed in this present study can assist in the large scale plantation of E.camaldulensis in future

Pilot-scale recovery of low molecular weight organic acids from anaerobically treated palm oil mill effluent (POME) with energy integrated system

    Get PDF
Low molecular weight organic acids such as acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acids generated from partial anaerobic treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) were recovered using pilot scale filtration and evaporation system. Mechanical filter press (14 L) was used for removing solid fractions and fraction distillation unit (40 L) for evaporation and clarification of concentrated acid from POME. Clarification using rotary evaporator was found to be more suitable than distillation column. Due to the presence of more than 90% of water in POME, the final clarified product comprises only 7% of the total volume. The material balance for the overall process was estimated and integrated system for the bioconversion of organic acids into polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) was proposed. The recovery of organic acids has a significant and economical impact, since around 50% cost of PHA production is believed to be associated with the substrate itself

The effect of hydraulic retention time and volatile fatty acids produced during fermentation were investigated on biohydrogen production from palm oil mill effluent in a 50 L bioreactor. The fermentation was done in three different hydraulic retention times; HRT 5, HRT 3 and HRT 2 days. Hydraulic retention time and volatile fatty acids concentration showed a vital role in response to the biohydrogen concentration, biohydrogen rate and biohydrogen yield. The maximum biohydrogen concentration was obtained at HRT 2 days with 30% hydrogen content in biogas. The biohydrogen yield and rate were 1054 NmL/L-POME and 44 NmL/h/L-POME, respectively. The lowest biohydrogen yield and rate were observed at HRT 5 days with 557 NmL/L-POME and 5 NmL/h/LPOME, respectively. Meanwhile, the accumulation of propionic acid concentration up to 7 g/L was suggested as a factor that reduced the biohydrogen production.Key words

    Get PDF
Pressed-shredded empty fruit bunches (EFB) and palm oil mill effluent (POME) anaerobic sludge from a 500 m3 closed anaerobic digester system was utilized for the co-composting treatment. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the shredding-pressing treatment on EFB gave better results in removing the debris and silica bodies as compared to only shredding treatment. However, similar characteristics were detected in both physically-treated EFB samples by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, mainly in the regions of 900 to 1740 and 2800 to 3400 cm-1. After the anaerobic digestion of fresh raw POME, the protein origin (Amide I) band appeared in the POME anaerobic sludge. Besides, the band intensities at 2925 and 2855 cm-1 which attributed to the composition of fat and lipid was decreased. The maturity of the composting material after 40 days of treatment was detected by the appearance of the nitrate band at 1376 cm-1 and the results corresponded to the final C/N ratio of 12.4. Solid state 13C CP/MAS nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was also used to reveal the characteristic changes of pressed-shredded EFB-POME anaerobic sludge based compost
